“When I arrived and stated my name for the reservation, "Joe" the manager knew exactly who I was from a phone call I'd made days before the event. He kindly introduced himself, and led us to our table. This was just the start of all positive things to follow through-out the night. We ended up having a few extra guests but, no problem...they just simply accommodated us without hesitation! With "Joe" the manager, great food, great service (sorry but, I can't remember our hostess' name), and an awesome live band, our birthday event was simply marvelous! “Returning to Washington from a France worn down by its own melancholy — a nation led by a presidential couple seemingly disconnected from l'esprit de grandeur — was a relief. The Monocle, nestled just a short pas de géant from Capitol Hill, felt like an antidote. Walking through its doors, I immediately felt transported, like one of the CIA operatives from Lioness Psy-Ops, covertly meeting allies in a safe haven of quiet luxury. Opened in October 1960 by Connie and Helen Valanos, The Monocle has seen more political deals sealed over its crab cakes than perhaps in the chambers of Congress themselves. As the Washingtonian noted, “The Monocle is a better restaurant than it’s given credit for,” serving dishes like “pan-fried Chesapeake Bay oysters baked in a light curry sauce” that feel like culinary diplomacy at its finest. What strikes one immediately is the duality of the space: half public house, half refined eatery. In the restaurant's more elegant quarters, I chose a glass of Sancerre, its mineral brightness pairing effortlessly with the signature crab cakes — plump, golden, and loaded with chair de crabe so sweet it could make a New Englander weep. A red wine-braised New York strip followed, its sauce reminiscent of the old-world simplicity one finds in France’s brasseries, yet undeniably American in its confident presentation. The maître d’, Nick Selimos — a fixture here for nearly three decades — greeted every guest with the kind of warmth that makes even the most hardened lobbyist feel comme chez soi. “There’s nothing more satisfying,” said John Valanos, the owner, “than having someone say, ‘We’ll come back ourselves.’” And come back they do — senators, staffers, and curious tourists alike. Sipping a digestif, I glanced at the black-and-white photos adorning the walls — Kennedy, Nixon, and other Washington titans. It’s said JFK dined here regularly during his Senate days. As The Washington Post humorously observed, "Intentions are spoken here, alliances formed, and deals sealed," all over dishes that balance simplicity and sophistication. Leaving The Monocle, I felt reconnected to the vibrancy of Washington, its pulse steadied by the legacy of places like this — where history, gastronomy, and a touch of joie de vivre blend into something unforgettable.“

“We visited from Tennessee to come here obviously because we are HUGE fans of Chef Dorzon... to our absolute delight I got to fan girl and meet him!!! I am absolutely obsessed! To make the visit even better, the food was freaking phenomenal! Our waitress made our stay perfect. “I went on a Saturday afternoon with a small group. I made a reservation but when we got there there was plenty of seating. I asked for a drink that the bartender made amazing! They were quick to take our order and the food came out in a reasonable time frame. Everyone's food was great, we were so hungry and didn't get pictures lol. The place was clean and ambiance nice. Highly recommend, this was our first time and I will go back.“

“Such a wonderful place to eat and relax! There is a nice selection of food and drink, including sandwiches, salads, soups and pastries. The food is good, fresh made and inexpensive. The staff are welcoming. The atmosphere is warm and relaxing. I love to go 2-3 times a week for my Polish grandmother's borscht and some protein bites! They are trying to keep us all healthy! “This was my and my fiancé's first time dining at this restaurant a few nights ago. We made a table reservation via OpenTable for 7:00pm, arrived at 6:50pm, and we were seated right away. From previous reviews I heard I was a good idea to make reservations, so that seems to be accurate from our experience because it was definitely a full house. The food is a bit pricey, but definitely worth it because it was delicious. I enjoyed my appetizer of Fiesta Egg rolls which were definitely cheesy, hot, and full of shredded chicken and lots of flavor. For entrees I got the Prime Rib (medium) which was cooked perfectly with some redskin mashed potatoes 😋 my fiancé got the Eastern Shore style crab cakes which were broiled and very tasty; came with coleslaw and show string french fries. My fiancé enjoyed all of his meal, with the exception of the coleslaw which he did not partake in due to health reasons. I also tried to Elite Margarita which was pretty good but a tad strong on the tequila for my liking, but the lime slice helped to take down some of the bitter alcohol taste for me 🙂👍🏾 The atmosphere of the restaurant is very relaxing, classy, and dimly lit which we loved because it had a romantic vibe to it. Our server, Olivia, was very friendly and welcoming and was on point making sure everything was to our liking. We will definitely be returning again to this location.“

“I’d rate it 4 if looking at food only but if you like decor and style it’s down to a 3 ?So this place is like a time warp back into early 2000’s middle America in some ways. Do not come for trendy food or stylish decor. Do come for large portions and fresh food. I had the special salad for $16.95 and my husband had the burger for $15.95. For the hill we think these are great prices and good value. The restaurant is huge with a bar and lots of high tops. Definitely a casual spot and not pricey for the hill at all.The decor is super non-cohesive and that’s what makes me feel like I’ve been transplanted to early aughts middle America but don’t kill me;I like nice things ?This is going to be a good spot to come with a crowd or to procure a table for a large group- which is another rare thing to find on the hill imo.The blue cheese both in my salad and in my husband’s burger was such a walk down memory lane and so good. Think sentimental comfort food, I suppose.“

Excellent food. Homemade, real and fresh ingredients since the 80s. No frills. Just good, old-school deli with sandwiches and more. Survived COVID. Small, family-owned business.
Detailed version:
I've been going to this deli since I was 8 years old, which was 29 years ago. My parents took me there and we never stopped going.
Everything on their menu is great, but personally, my favorite menu items are the Reuben, their classic Steak and Cheese sub, Chicken Noodle Soup and Deviled Eggs. The Reuben on rye is just delicious, comforting, greasy goodness with their homemade thousand island dressing and a little bit of coleslaw. I don't know if the coleslaw is what already comes with it because they know my order and don't ask, but I enjoy that extra crunch and little bit of sweetness in the sandwich.
Their Steak and Cheese are a classic and still so good. I remember in the 90s when people used to line up out the door to wait for this sub.
The Chicken Noodle Soup is seasonal and usually only available during the fall and winter. Hands down best chicken noodle soup you will find in the MoCo and surrounding areas. The owner Jay makes it himself now but he uses his mother's homemade secret recipe. I remember her and her husband. She was their secret weapon. She made all the recipes for all their homemade foods. Her husband was the taste tester and always chilling at a table reading a Korean newspaper until it was time for him to sweep. They passed away years ago, but they were there everyday.
The deviled eggs contain relish, so it might not suite everyone's tastes, but I love it. So simple, so fresh, just good.
There is a lot of history in their ingredients and recipes. They always put love and care into their food and that's why we haven't stopped going. Hope you all give them a try.“

“MaShaaAllah! Went to the New Carrollton IHOP to reward my granddaughters for doing so well in school and all that they are accomplishing this school year. Our server was Marcus and he was awesome! Very attentive and on top of his job. My granddaughter even complimented him about his eyes. Really enjoyed our visit today. My husband ordered tea, Marcus even asked him if he wanted black or green tea, no previous server ever did that, we were very impressed with him. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾“
