“A Californian and a Texan walk into a Midwest Taco joint… and are pleasantly surprised! Fun concept Tex-Mex menu with unique choices of sauces, meats, toppings, and shells to choose from. They have flights of special dips and signature margaritas, allowing for a fun and creative tasting experience starting with apps and drinks. For the mains, you can either build your own or taco/bowl/burrito or choose from one of their signature pairings from a large menu. They have several meat and non meat options to choose from, and our server Colby did an awesome job helping us navigate the menu to create a great Taco Tuesday experience. He took great care of us and made the fun but large menu even more approachable and enjoyable. Would definitely recommend trying it out, just keep in mind that if you are from CA/TX and like things SPICY, that the spice level on all items is geared towards a midwestern pallet aka on the milder side.“

“DOC Royal Oak for me is the best option in the Royal Oak area for espresso-based drinks. The loungey seating is better than most places but the ambient music that is always running is a great reason to sit and enjoy a coffee. Excellent selection of tunes with a wide variety ranging from old school funk to modern chill. The roasted coffee selection for purchase rates very well. And the baristas are well-trained in pulling top-tier shots to go along with perfectly frothed milk for your cappuccino or macchiato (my go-to’s)“

They cheerfully made fresh batches of delicious hummus (two varieties) which came with chips and pita bread. I served that, along with two kinds of their fabulous soup, to my dinner guests. I got the chorizo hash with scrambled eggs, and she got a breakfast sandwich. Why not stop in at Royal Oak Roast? It’s a comfy place with great people watching. The coffee is wonderful and refills are a dollar. So many different coffee choices in all styles, including espresso over over Weiss vanilla ice cream!!! Jim Brady’s in Royal Oak is hands down one of the best group hangout spots in the area. The location alone is unbeatable—right in the heart of the action, bringing together a lively mix of people and that unbeatable Royal Oak energy. Whether you’re posted up at the bar, grabbing a booth inside, or soaking up the sun on the outdoor patio, there’s always plenty of seating and even more good vibes.

Now let’s talk about the real reason this review is being written: the grilled octopus appetizer. As someone who’s traveled to more than 15 countries and spent time off the beaten path in Italy dining alongside locals—not tourists—I can say with complete confidence that this octopus is a 10 out of 5. Perfectly grilled, tender with the right char, flavorful in all the right ways… it instantly transported me back to the cobblestone alleys of southern Italy where seafood is sacred.

My best friend Janessa is a burger girl through and through (and yes, Jim Brady’s burgers are excellent too), but if it were up to me, I’d have five plates of grilled octopus in front of me every time I come. I haven’t found a single restaurant in the U.S. that even comes close to this level of grilled octopus perfection. If you’re even thinking about going, do yourself a favor: order the octopus—you’ll never look back.
