“Great place for a glass of wine and a gourmet panini. I had the Hale Lake; it is the first Reuben that I've had in a while that wasn't greasy. Great atmosphere, good selection of food and local wines!”

“We recently had a birthday party in the party/meeting room. It was the second year we have done that.Erin provided excellent service for our large group, ensuring that we had all the drinks and food we needed through the evening. The only downside was that there was quite a bit of time from the first pizzas that came out to the last pizzas - It wasn't beyond reason, but seems a little odd as the restaurant wasn't overly busy.I would definitely recommend someone use them for another party or gathering.”

“I went here with coworkers for an after work social meetup, and will say we had an excellent time. I was informed that "they will just throw anything into their beer and advertise it correctly" when I asked a coworker if the "Oyster" beer really meant it had oysters in it. On arrival I ordered the bogo dark beer (menu revealing indeed that the oyster beer was brewed with said shellfish), and made sure that I could come back for the second when paying for the first. They honored this with no question, however when I went for the second, they served the gal in my group who went up to the bar with me right away, then served the entire line of customers (6 or 7 people) that showed up AFTER me before asking me for my order. This was frustrating and I expressed that, but my second beer came moments after I indicated that I was also a paying customer (had I paid after-the-fact this would have reduced their tip, however I was already committed). Kudos to the slightly effeminate bearded guy who took my original order, and not to any of his three coworkers operating the bar after that time. The oyster beer did indeed have a hint of oyster to it, but it wasn't nearly as unique or fishy as I had expected. My second beer was the "Potato Kraut" beer, and it was quite obviously sauerkrauty in a way that added taste and didn't detract from the beer. I had also ordered the Friday special fish and chips dinner (not all-you-can-eat like some locations in town), and it was also north atlantic cod and not in-state walleye like some other places. That being said the Fish was excellent (although one of three pieces was barely a finger in size). The chips are a beer-battered normal fry (not "chip" sized wedges like one expects with fish and chips, which is actually better) and had some cheese, seasoning and chives thrown on top. I opted for the ($10! seems a little excessive but I mean IT IS poor-mans caviar) upgrade for trout roe on top, and there was a measurable amount of orange salty fish eggs mixed in with the "chips". It did not take long for the food to come out, and it was a delicious salty greasy dish, nothing less than I expected, and definitely enhanced a little bit the somewhat disappointing "Oyster" beer. I have never been to a bar where they adequately provide service to random patrons who approach the bar, but the delay in service for my second beer was atrocious enough to discourage me, otherwise this place would have a perfect score.Parking: Giant lot behind the 5 buildings/businesses in the block. Some spots overtaken by folks who are incapable of understanding the size of their vehicle or how parking lines work in a lot.”

“When in Grand Rapids, bring your cooler and pack it full of 'miner hand pies' better known as delicious PASTIES. There's only a handful of places from The UP (of Michigan) over to The Iron Range who not only make and serve delicious Pasties, but have them frozen or freezer ready to go. Please make Pasties Plus a stop on your way. This is a take out and take home place. I recall seeing one small table. So don't bring a group here to eat. Call ahead and order for your group, family or yourself. Then stop in. Take out. And enjoy. PS - I suggest cutting your hot Pastie in half. Partly to let the heat and savory smells out, but also so you can douse one side with ketchup while you taste the other side straight up.”

In on the Friday before Christmas, between 1230-1pm, restaurant was packed, but Trish was rocking the front register with lots of smiles and apologies for the wait to order and friendly interactions with customers and coworkers. “Forest Lakes makes a great local spot to get lunch. The parking lot has a tendency to overflow onto the surrounding roads and the lake parking area, which is a testament to the consistency of the food here. My first visit had me try the Raspberry Wonton Shrimp Salad, of which I can only pine for the dressing to come on the side. The shrimp were placed in a separate container "to avoid wilting the salad" which is a legitimate concern, and allowed for one to easily cut them to a size capable of mixing with the salad for fork friendliness, but I did sneak one while I was chopping them and it was an excellent flat coconut-fried shrimp. For some reason though the dressing is not given the same potential-salad-ruining consideration by default, and is not provided in a ramekin, but rather overly applied to the main part of the salad. After mixing in the diner-cut shrimp, the salad was still dripping and the raspberry sauce overpowers everything. There is an easy solution to that though, one just has to know to ask for dressing on the side. It was a good salad, just overpowered. I also had the famed chicken wild rice soup, and it was delectable. One only has to drive around Grand Rapids once to know the popularity of the wild rice in the region, and this soup was a good representation. My brief time in Grand Rapids also overlapped with Saint Patrick's Day, and after the Pickled Loon proved to be too busy for a takeout order (advertising an Irish-American-style poutine that caught my interest), Forest Lakes was able to provide their holiday special for take out. I had the fake American corned beef with: cabbage, stewed carrots, and boiled potatoes. This dish was nothing to write home about, not uniquely good in any way, and therefore perfect for a representative of Irish-American immigrant food. Every meal came with a roll or breadstick and single serving containers of real butter, rather than margarine. If you are looking for anything well spiced, get over that expectation and welcome to Minnesota, otherwise I will say they make the flavours come alive with adequate butter usage and hometown flair. Actual rating is about 3.5, not 4, but limitations on google merit rounding.Parking: see main review”
