“I've lived in this area for almost a decade, but had not yet found Latin food that could compare to what I had growing up in Union City and when I lived in the city and visited Washington Heights. Until now, that is! Surrender Cafe recently became available on DoorDash. I had never heard of it, but was drawn by the great reviews, tempting photos of the food, and many of my favorites on a menu with lots of my favorites. This is the first time I've ever ordered from a place, and then immediately again the next day. I especially love that so many of their dishes are available in smaller portions. Want to try the mofongo? Here's the mofonguitos! And meat-only portions can be had of just about everything in small, medium or large sizes, which made it easy for me to sample the beef and chicken guisado, red and black beans, pernil, so I ordered the bistec ecebollado for my main dish. Everything, absolutely everything is delicious, and arrived well packaged. Oh - and I almost forgot - the tres leches! Absolutely top notch. Not only some of the best Latin food I've ever had, but some of the best comfort food I've ever had, period.“

“Really cool, hip spot in Caldwell for good Peruvian food. Our server knew exactly what to recommend as well when we asked about the specials, entrees, and appetizers. We had ceviche as a appetizer as well as some Maduros and they were quite tasty. I really enjoyed my main entree which was a Mofongo saltado which adds a nice Dominican fusion/flair to it. For dessert I went with the flan and espresso and I feel like you can't go wrong with that choice. My friends had the tres leches and they mentioned it was super tasty too. Not too many seats in the restaurant so make sure to call ahead and make a reservation.“

When it was time to pay the check, I noticed their new pay system had already added a 15% tip to the bill. I think tipping should ALWAYS be the discretion of the patron. Because my server was great, I didn't have a problem paying the 15%. I wonder if her tip is shared. FYI, you can change the tip amount at the register, but ya'll need to pay attention.Food at this diner is always yummy. The staff is great and at my visit they were on top of everything. It comes in a creamy mushroom sauce (I included the picture of what was barely remaining). But we also love to get the Jalea which is not in their updated menu. I did call to ask about that specifically because we ordered take out. Had a bit of a problem with my order but they were able to help me and fixed my order.“
