Ho Won N Forsyth is a longtime Chinatown gem, relocated and now in a larger, brighter space. This classic, old-school Cantonese bakery, around since 1980, still delivers beloved classics with an old school taste and feel that reminds many of childhood snacks. The breads and snacks are great and affordable, with many locals trusting this spot.
The pastries always look fresh. Must-tries include the pork bun, which has soft, fluffy dough with a perfectly seasoned filling. Other popular items are the chashu bao, jian dui, and Cantonese-style zongzi. Hakka-style Rice Rolls are savory and perfect on their own. For those new to the bakery, Pineapple Buns (Bo Lo Bao) are a classic with a sweet, crumbly top and soft, fluffy interior. Sa-Yong (Egg Puffs) are addictive, hollow Cantonese fried dough puffs. Sesame Balls (Jian Dui) are perfectly crisp outside with a chewy, airy interior filled with sweet red bean. Pork Fried Dumplings (Ham Sui Gok) are savory, crescent-shaped pockets with a glutinous shell and juicy pork filling.
Seasonal treats like Neen Go, Fot Gao, and Lo Bok Go are available, especially around Chinese New Year. A consistent bestseller is their Joong—a massive, savory tamale stuffed with Chinese sausage, green beans, egg yolk, and braised pork. The dried shrimp rolls are really delicious and super fresh. The stuffed tofu is also noted as being very good and filling.
The atmosphere is welcoming and very clean, with a few high tables where you can stand and enjoy your food. A few tables are available for eating. The ladies here are very nice and patient. Prices are a great value for the quality, and supporting this spot helps keep a true Chinatown legend thriving. It is cash only, closed on Mondays, and has wheelchair access.
