Best place for sushi

I have since been to Japan, can confirm it feels like Japan and is better than most places.
This is one of my all time favorite sushi joints, along with the dear departed Nozawa in California. Yama is known for extra large pieces of fish and wow are they fresh! I called it a “joint” for a reason, you’d probably never find it if you didn’t already know it’s there. Worth the effort! And the staff genuinely cares, they counseled me, with great tact and delicacy of course, when I made a questionable ordering choice. Love this place ❤️

Yama is a simple and delicious sushi restaurant that has been a favorite for many years. The food is fresh and the flavors are good, with large portions that can surprise you. The restaurant has a very nondescript appearance, being located a short flight down the stairs, and features simple decor with seating at a sushi counter and a couple of tables. Despite its unchanged look, the quality of the sushi and sashimi remains top-notch and consistent. Many customers, including long-time visitors, highly recommend special roll #7, the mango sushi roll, and nasu shigayaki. The omakase special offers quick service with highlights like soba noodles in peanut sauce and fresh sashimi, featuring generous portions of sea urchin, fatty tuna, and shrimp. While the seafood is praised, some have noted that the cuts can be uneven and the rice may not meet the standards of traditional Japanese sushi restaurants. Yama is a unique and treasured place that stands out among other sushi restaurants in New York City, offering an incredible dining experience that keeps customers coming back for more. However, it is important to note that it is not wheelchair accessible.
