My mother, sister-in-law, and I were in the mood for coffee after having dinner at a nearby restaurant on a Tuesday. We arrived at the café around 9:30 PM. Three Portuguese patrons occupied seats at the bar while Portuguese news played on the televisions. It was well-lit, and the absence of music was a welcome contrast to our loud dinner. This is a neighbourhood place frequented by people who have known, spent their lives with and shared card games, coffee, drinks, challenges, joys and all of life's experiences for a half a century and more, in many cases. The food makes many of those who left Portugal so long ago feel at home. The coffee is the way that they would have it in Portugal. I live around the corner from this place and for 3 years, everyday I’ve walked by. Honestly, I’ve never been inside but the men always sitting outside, yelling at each other while enjoying a coffee always makes me feel right at home. Café Centrale, never change.
