Restaurantji's Folly Beach guide: Where to find the ultimate Mexican flavors.
“We had the guacamole which was amazing. It was handmade and fresh which came with corn chips. We went to the top jaguar bar/restaurant. They had an amazing artist playing and singing so that was fabulous for the atmosphere but the service was the worst. The bartender took our order which we had to go to the bar from the tables to order. We felt bad because he was all alone working but also he was pretty rude. First we cleaned our two top table. We cleared the dishes and the table. Then went to a long table on the deck when it opened up- it too was super dirty and not clean so we tried to help by stacking and cleaning. Eventually the bartender came and cleared the rest of the dishes. I went and waited patiently to order more food by the bar. I couldn’t hear him and he couldn’t hear me so I stepped forward to the side of the bar next to the trash can and he waved his hand at me to move. I had asked him what he recommended to eat and he told me the birra tacos so I ordered those (without cheese as I am allergic). Then he told me that the cheese makes the tacos so I should order something else so than I asked for ceviche instead. Than he brought me the tacos. It was super odd. He was grumpy and not friendly at all. Other patrons came and went due to the tables not getting cleaned. Again, I felt bad because clearly he needed help but he was also just not in a good mood. Also, it said 21 and up in the jaguar bar but there was clearly a young teen and then a small kiddo came and joined our table. We didn’t mind however there was a table of men who were cussing very loudly and drinking and it seemed super inappropriate.“
“This place is awesome! The hostess was friendly and we couldn’t have had a better waiter than Tyler. We started with the Dip Trio, which the four of us thoroughly enjoyed. All of us were happy with the taste and quantity of our food. I had the Soft-shell Crab, which was very unique for a Mexican dish, but was well executed! My wife and kids enjoyed their food as well. We will definitely go back here again.“
“The only reason I give our food 4 stars is because it was cold when it came out. We ate in the bar area, not the restaurant and the bartenders were slammed, also taking food orders. We brought the food home and reheated and it was delicious!“
“Bar hopped a few places while visiting Charleston. Overall between the food and drinks everything was better than most of the places. Stayed in town for the week and ended up returning multiple times over the past week. Sebastian and the rest of the Bar staff is great and very friendly too! Great location in downtown Charleston, close to everything. Would definitely return next time in town!“
“Always a delicious, fresh meal when stopping by California Tortilla. I stop in for tacos or a quesadilla on occasion and every time, I'm met with a sparkling clean restaurant, friendly staff, and bold flavors. My favorite menu option is the carnitas tacos as is. Got to try their new BBQ pork grill melt today as well, which was cheesy and tangy. Pro tip: join the Burrito Elite club for fantastic coupons emailed to you, such as a free grill melt .“
“This review is overdue. We visited Mex 1 Coastal Cantina this past October and stopped by for dinner. I ordered the two taco platter and chose Bangin' Shrimp and Baja Fish tacos. It was absolutely amazing. Our server was fantastic - I wish I could remember her name. Just a wonderful dinner. A few days later we were in the area again and went for lunch. We were greeted by the same server and both ordered the same entrees we had previously - they were both equally as good as a few nights ago and the server was just as fantastic. We will be visiting in about a month for a 3 week stay in the area and you can bet Mex 1 will be a frequent stop.“
“The restaurant staff did a great job making accommodations for me and my wheelchair. Despite being busy, the bartender came around and helped me clean food off my chair and arm after one of my fits. Thanks to Abbi for a great first Yobo Cantina experience.Wheelchair accessibility: The space has enough flexibility to accomodate wheelchairs“
“This place was extremely fun and i would of never expected it they had one of the best margaritas ive ever had and seem to be very tequila centric but the other cocktails i tried were all great as well but the true stand out was just the names of the drinks i mean where else do you get a drink called the divorce “
“My girlfriend and I are in town for a week and hit this spot randomly after a beach day with the dog. What a find! The jalepeno shrimp tacos are seriously the best shrimp tacos I've ever had, and the price is not super inflated like a lot of other "Street taco" style places I've been to. Margaritas were on point (prickly pear is hands down the best) and nice and strong. Even with all the choices we have around Charleston for only being here a week we chose to come here multiple times because of how good it was. If I'm ever back, there's no question where I'm coming again.“
“I was a Rio Chico aficianado who was romanced away by the latest Mexican Bar, but I have come back home. Why?- neverending chips and salsa- giganto draft beers and margaritas- warm platesAs a 3rd generation immigrant and CA native I am dangerously demanding with portions and presentation ('yes, but, what would Grandma order?'). Beware the portions - they are giant. I heartily recommend fajitas, tamales y tacos. Accept that you will have extras for lunch tomorrow and order the large Dos Equis on draft or the Medium Margaritas (large only if someone else is driving). Come for your BDay, but don't ask the staff to sing for you - that is for visitors; as a local, order a round of lemon drops and the fajitas to share.“
“If you’re thinking about stopping, do it. My wife and I just picked up some food after months of passing by their truck and only wish we had stopped sooner. We tried their quesadilla and beef and chicken tacos, and man did they marinate and season everything beautifully. It’s the closest we’ve had to authentic Mexican food we’ve found in Charleston. We will definitely be making the trip back to John’s Island just for this truck.“
“I got a Cachitaco, a shrimp taco, and a fish taco. The fish and shrimp tacos were both on a double stacked corn tortilla. I know a lot of places that do this, but I'm just not a fan. The stuff inside was very good though. The cachitaco was AWESOME! 5/5, would eat again. They dip a flour tortilla in the rendered fat from the meat, then char it before filling it up with meat and cheese.“
“This place is a true gem. It's everything you want from a neighborhood bar including a great staff, good drinks and awesome food options. The local community that Lucky Luchador serves is warm and welcoming--as an out of towner I felt completely embraced by them. I wish I had a great spot like this near where I live, and can't say enough nice things about it. If you're lucky enough to live in Charleston, you won't regret visiting Lucky Luchador.“
“Delicious sushi and queso and chips! The chips had seasoning salt which made it so yummy! ? We got the Tusunami & Lobster Rangoon Rolls. It was a LOT of food! And honestly they were excellent together! They complimented each other really well! Happy hour was awesome! $2.00 of everything on the menu! Definitely satisfied that craving for Mexican and sushi! It was just what we both wanted.“
“This is a hidden GEM. My husband and I are from Colorado, home of incredible authentic Mexican food. We have been trying to find something like this here for 2.5 years and finally did! We came for breakfast and got one cheese tamale, one chicken tamale, two breakfast tacos, and the Godzilla breakfast taco. We watched him hand press each ball of raw tortilla dough and cook each to order for the tacos… The flour tortillas were phenomenal. I would come back just to eat those by themselves. They also have a salsa bar with 13 homemade salsas… and pickled onions, jalapeño, onion/cilantro, radish, etc. Not to mention, the man helping us was welcoming, kind, chatted with us, came to check on us multiple times, expressed a lot of gratitude. We are lucky to have driven by this hidden gem this morning before grocery store shopping. Just a great experience. We will be back, often!“
“Really glad I don’t own a restaurant in this city, some of these reviews are so hyper-critical and nitpicky. This place is awesome. As someone who is GF/DF, I can safely eat some of my favorite foods that are typically difficult to find allergen friendly.Have been numerous times, never disappoints. Staff are friendly, music is spot on, and the seating is charming. One of the staff even gave us a homemade, complimentary salsa on our way out. Will continue to go back and recommend this to my fellow locals who support local.“
“¡Dios mío! Absolutely the most authentic and delicious street style tacos I’ve had outside of DF! No joke…who would expect that in Mt Pleasant SC??? The staff were fantastic and friendly and everyone at my table left fat and happy! Can’t wait to come back and try more dishes.I’m going to be dreaming about these tacos!Kid-friendliness: They have great kid menu options for the chavalitos.“
“Large servings, be prepared to take home tomorrow's lunch. Excellent food. I had the seafood chimichanga (two, I could only eat one) that came with a salad, sour cream, beans, and rice. My wife had the chicken fajitas. Add on the margarita and daiquiri and the cost was no worse than anywhere else with half the food. Service was excellent, do leave a good tip.“
“Everything I've tried here is great. I find myself ordering the street tacos most frequently. It's within walking distance of my home, so I don't even have to brave Maybank Hwy traffic.Their margaritas are excellent, as well.“
“Sam the bartender is truly his personality. What sets Sam apart is his warm and engaging personality, making every visit to the bar a memorable experience. The attention to detail, combined with a genuine passion for mixology, ensures that each drink is crafted to perfection. Sam's ability to read customers and suggest personalized drink recommendations adds a delightful touch to the overall service. If you're looking for a skilled bartender who elevates your drinking experience, Sam is the one to seek out. Cheers to Sam for making every visit to the bar a highlight!“
“Food was Fast and Amazing and Jade our awesome waitress was just a joy and never missed a beat even though she was swamped !! Open late and absolutely the best guac and salsa i have had in any restaurant !! If your in Charleston you have to try this place !!JADE Thank you for turning our evening around by such a warm wonderful smile and sweet southern charm !!“
“I throughly enjoyed dining here despite what the other reviews might suggest. The restaurant is clean, the service was great, and the food was good! I had the steak Mexicanos and I wouldn't have changed anything about the dish. I also enjoyed the margarita flight. Some flavors more than others, but that was expected. It felt like a bargain to get 4 different decently sized margs for $12. I will definitely return and highly suggest giving it a try!“
“Flawless experience. My girlfriend and I came here for lunch and we had a fine time. The appetizer trio featured two flavors of salsa and both were fire. The queso and the gauc were equally on point. The service was great and our food came out quick. Definitely check this place out.“
“New favorite spot for a perfectly portioned meal and wonderful staff! Will be back, for sure.Parking: Lots of parking for this place and the surrounding shops and restaurants!Kid-friendliness: Quite a few kids and staff were great with them.“
“I HAVE to come here EVERY TIME im in town (which is every year)!! I'm talking, even before I go to put my bags down, lol! I always get the chicken nachos. It's something about that cheese that keeps bringing me back, lmao!! I will see you in about 3 months, Juanita!“
“First off the extremely courteous service, I felt very well welcomed. The atmosphere was great. Nice patio for outside dining and good view of outside downtown. Food wait time was extremely fast and tasted great! I will definitely come back. For Mexican that’s good and fast (extremely low wait time), clean and good customer service… I highly recommend. If tequila is your drink of choice, they have ALL the good brands. Azul won’t disappoint.“
“My Stars! The corn cheese dip is out of this world ? So delicious ?? absolutely love the banging shrimp ? Taco. The new pick 2 tacos and rice with beans . My new favorite! The corn chips are warm airy and crisp. This is my favorite restaurant.“
“Excited to try the new Santi's in West Ashley! I have been a fan of the original Santis downtown for years. This new addition is fun, funky and a fantastic addition to this side of the river. The decor is fun and vibrant. Lots of artwork, murals and a Frida vibe. The food was delicious and the prices were great! They have lunch specials and favorites. We tried an appetizer, three entrees, a round of drinks for 75 dollars before tax and tip. Excited to have a fun spot for margaritas and Mexican food close by!“
“Awesome outdoor restaurant with good food. You do have to serve yourself, but it is a nice place to sit and enjoy a taco and a beer. Lots of shade from trees.Parking: Not many places to park but short walking distance from downtown main drag. There are a decent amount of pay for parking lots nearby.Kid-friendliness: All the seating is wooden benches and tables outside and kids can run around.“
