“Hy lu Hee Hee ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Hy Lu Hee Hee means “Good Times and Lots of Laughter.” The Hy lu Hee Hee is a Gig Harbor, WA local’s hang-out that got it start as a Tavern in 1935. In 1958, the State condemned the tavern building and asked that the business vacate the premises, so they could build a new highway to Purdy. The business was rebuilt in 1983, in a new location, by new owners, which is where it has remained ever since. I have been visiting Gig Harbor since 1990, but my first visit to the Hy Lu Hee Hee wasnt until 5/19/23, which was a Friday. Although I arrived before 9 PM, the music was LOUD! I’ve decided to do a sound check via the app SoundPrint. It averaged 83 dB and got as high as 88 dB, which is considered Very Loud. That would’ve been acceptable if I had signed up to see a live band, but it wasn’t. It was bad pre-recorded music, being played over blown speakers.  I had to shout out my order. Everyone around me was shouting too. My server told me this is the norm after 9 PM. Unless you’re already deaf, or enjoy the thought of shouting at your dining companions, I recommend you visit the Hy Lu Hee Hee earlier in the day.  I ordered one of the five house favorites on the menu, Fish + Chips ($17) - Breaded and Seasoned Wild Alaskan True Cod with Fries, House Slaw + Tartar Sauce. Compared to all the fish and chips I’ve eaten in Washington state, it was pretty standard fare. It was a generous portion of fries, and I liked the housemade tartar sauce. The coleslaw had decent flavor, but it obviously been made sometime ago and was swimming in liquid. Personally, I prefer Tides Tavern, which is another Gig Harbor local’s hang out, but I’ll be back at some point to visit the Hy lu Hee Hee. “Been here around 5 times now. Their food is generously portioned and absolutely delicious every single time. Not once has been a miss. Probably some of the best fish and chips around, too. Last time I was here I got the fried chicken sandwich and it was fantastic. The service is also great, polite, and fast. I don't think it's ever taken more than 15 minutes to get my food. Their prices are, imo, better than a lot of places. Especially since their portions are enough it's easy to take half of it home. Love it.“

“Sporty's is one of the few places to get breakfast early in the morning. Their blueberry pancakes are mouthwatering! There's lots of seating and the prices are reasonable. We had a group of a dozen people arrive on a surprise snowy morning, and they had great food. Highly recommended!“

“Such a neat, unique pllace. Great customer service even at shift change. There is a pool table in the middle area - separate room from the bar and then in the back room, there are two pool tables another separate room. I will definitely be back. The curry soup was amazing.“

Our party of 4 each got something completely different and everyone was very pleased. I got a salad with chicken, cranberries, apples, and candied pecans. Everything was super-fresh and crisp. “Well, it’s Friday night in Tacoma, which is about the time the week lets go of your collar and you realize you’ve survived another five days of God's green earth. The sun is setting over the Sound; the parking lot is filling up with folks who’ve decided that cooking supper is an optional hobby for another day.

I was sitting there at a high-top table with three of my coworkers—good people, salt of the earth, the kind of folks who know how to work hard and aren’t afraid to talk about it over a beer. We had ourselves a perch where we could swivel our heads just enough to keep one eye on the NFL game and the other on the Seattle Mariners, hoping against hope that tonight’s the night things finally break our way.

Now, some folks from out of town might look at a chain restaurant and think it’s all mass-produced and predictable, like a box of saltines from the bottom of the pantry. But those folks haven’t met Kamie.

Kamie was our waitress, and let me tell you, she is the sort of person who could walk into a church basement during an argument over the annual bazaar and leave everyone feeling like they’d just won a blue ribbon for their winter squash. She has that cheerful, unflappable grace you only find in people who possess bottomless patience and have spent a good long while dealing with the public. She carried our orders with the easy poise of a choir director stepping up to the piano, and she didn't bat an eye when four of us showed up looking for a good meal and a beverage after a long week on the docks.

I ordered the riblet meal—tender little morsels of pork bathed in sweet and spicey barbecue sauce that’s sweet with just enough heat to remind you you’re alive—alongside a cold, frosty draft of beer that had beads of condensation running down the glass like a cold morning on open water. The food was good, solid, honest nourishment that didn't put on airs.

But the service? Well, the service was, as they say, WOW! Kamie brought the plates out with a smile that could melt the frost off a windshield, kept our glasses from going empty while we hashed out the events of the work week, and made you feel like you were the only table in the whole place, even though the room was humming right along with the weekend crowd.

It was a fine Friday night in Tacoma, good company, good food, and a reminder that grace can show up just about anywhere—even under the amber glow of an Applebee's neon sign. Five stars, without a doubt.“
