Katami

Katami 2701 W Dallas St, Houston Japanese • $$$$

“When we arrived we were promptly greeted and seated. It did take our server to get to us a good 10 minutes before talking and telling us what the concept and food recommendations were. The setting of the restaurant is clean, and airy due to the sun room setting on one side of the restaurant. To start us off, we did some drinks that were good but did not find any favourites. The two cold starters were: Hamachi Yuzu: 2/5 because the yuzu yoghurt was overpowering and the kombu powder left a sandy grit texture on the teeth that made it almost annoying to eat. Could barely taste the hamachi. Madai Carpaccio: 1/5 because the crunchy togarashi and black sesame soy sauce enveloped the Madai and the saucy component was too strong to complement the fish. Oyster with caviar was fresh and briny. Very tasty. 5/5. Would recommend avoiding the cold starters besides the oysters and moving straight to the nigiri and hot components of the menu. From the nigiri portion, we ordered: Hotate, salmon, gizzard shad, akami, amaebi and madai. Fresh, fatty, flavoursome cuts of delicious fish. Definitely recommend, 5/5. Also, tried the Olive A5 wagyu nigiri with black truffle and it was unctuous and absolute yum! From their hot portion, we got the baby back ribs, iberico shumai, and lobster with sake miso. The baby back ribs were falling off the bone, tender and seasoned to perfection. The shumai was good with a pipette of ponzu sauce. The lobster was rich, not overcooked and the panko with the miso sake lent it a Mac and cheese-esque quality to it. Would definitely get these again. For dessert go the Japanese melon which was sweet and juicy and had none of the chemical aftertaste that is found in the fruits here in the states. The green tea kakigori was airy and light. Usually not a fan of red bean ice cream or desserts but this one came with a really nice red bean ice cream. Would have liked the portion to be more to balance out the shaved ice. Overall it was a great time! Price wise it was affordable for the amount of food we ordered.”

Anvil

Anvil 1424 Westheimer Rd STE B, Houston Cocktail Bar • $$

“Anvil is, without a doubt, my favorite cocktail bar. And that's not just within Houston. The consistent quality of their cocktails is simply unrivaled. They have a rotating selection of featured cocktails, but half the time I order from their list of 100 classics because they craft them to near-perfection (sometimes perfection, if I'm being honest). Yesterday, I tried a new one containing shōchū, reposado tequila, and black sesame... my adjectives wouldn't do justice to the simple elegance and brilliance of that cocktail. They don't offer happy hour nor outdoor seating. There are probably ~15-20 seats at the bar and then 8-12 booths along the windows, each of which fits 4-5 people. The bartenders are always amazing, their knowledge of the craft is impressive. At the end of the day, Anvil isn't trying to rope you in with trendy fads nor great deals. But I suspect you'll be back for a return visit, because they're serving the highest-quality cocktails in town”

“Until I came here, I was reluctant to eat sushi in America. Most of the restaurants are run by people who have never been to Japan, and when we say sushi, it's rolls or sticky rice sushi, but this restaurant was different.I was able to speak with the owner, who said he had actually been to Japan, and the sushi rice and toppings were so good that I couldn't believe that they were available in America. The most delicious dish was the haburi kama.It reminded me of my mother's grilled kama that I ate in Japan. The price is a bit high, but if you can get this quality in America, it's worth it.It was the best sushi I've had in America!”

Hidden Omakase 5353 W Alabama St #102, Houston Japanese • $$$$

“While I have brand loyalty to a certain hospitality group in Houston, and the market is saturated, I am pleased to have found another go-to spot for high-quality omakase. Hidden can be found through a non-descript door of the center that houses Burger Chan and Conservatory. Hidden is familial and customers are seated in a U-shape counter. The chefs and hosts are engaging and super friendly. Hidden is BYOB with a corking fee. We had an 18-course omakase. Dishes range from oyster, nigiri, crudo, handroll, cooked items, apps, and a dessert. It was difficult for me to decide what my favorites were... they were delicious in their own unique way. While one reviewer disapproved of the toppings such as truffle butter and chili garlic, I found them to be pleasing and didn't feel like the fish was overpowered by them. The fish were buttery, fresh and flavorful. Worth a visit.”

“TLDR: The slow service impaired the dining experience, and the passive aggressive gratuity procedure degrades the image of this restaurant. We just went here for a nice family dinner. They have a good variety of food choices. The tortilla soup and cioppino were both excellent, as were the confit potatoes. The strip steak had good flavor. The seafood beignets was unique but nothing spectacular and the roasted cauliflower was just ok. As for the desserts, the blockbuster was pretty good. The carrot cake was nothing special. What really needs improvement is the service. The waiter was slow in coming for each step of the ordering process and dining experience, and we had to flag him down twice. Also, the soup i ordered arrived at the same time as my entree, instead of being brought out with the appetizers. At least the lady that filled our water was always prompt. We ended up spending 2.5 hrs there due to slow service. Then, a 20% tip was printed onto our bill. At the bottom of the check (not disclosed on the menu), it says that a “suggested gratuity” is added for all parties of 8 or more, but we only had 5 people in our party (2 adults and 3 kids). It also says, the guest has "right to determine the final amount, free from compulsion or negotiation,” yet there it is printed onto the bill, and another line labeled “Additional Tip” below. For the level of service we received, I would’ve tipped 18% max. While I certainly could have argued it, the dinner took so long i just wanted to leave. It wasn’t much extra money, but of course that is not the point, and, it left me with a negative impression of this establishment.Kid-friendliness: There is a kids menu”

“We were lucky enough to get the last service by Chef Jonathan. We had his Kobe fair well tour! And he made our experience amazing! We had recently had their parent restaurant Hidden Omakase and we enjoyed it but was recommended to try this joint for a lower price point and shorter meal.So for dinner they do 45 mins and they start on time so make sure you come a little early and take some pictures in the nft gallery out front. If you park it’s to the left of the Italian restaurant and has no signage.Once seated they get started right on the dot. But even though it’s a short service Jonathan explained what we were getting in great detail. We got better interaction here with the crew than at Hidden Omakase. It’s a younger group and more fun and lively. The Engawa was the best thing I have ever eaten at any sushi restaurant. This thing is life changing. And you’re able to get an extra piece as an a la carte add on. Do it!!! You will not regret it.My wife and I were so impressed, we will definitely be back and at this price point we can come more often.Best of luck on your next Journey chef Jonathan your skills will truly be missed here.”

It might not been the cleanest looking inside where I decided to sit at first but the experience and food each time was amazing. I even felt the food was better the second time ,In hopes to eat there soon again . It’s hard to get scrambled eggs right and they was very close that time . “Was in Houston for a few days and so glad I found this place! They curate their coffee beans from all over the world and have an extensive range of coffee/tea drinks to choose from. The espresso I had both days was extremely balanced and very smooth so I imagine their espresso based drinks are excellent. They had a very robust pour over selection as well I will certainly be trying next time. There was a wide range of pastry and food offerings that spanned a variety of options from sweet or savory toasts, to burritos and even an interesting Australian sausage roll. The menu had a ton of things I would have loved to try without being overly complex or excessive. I went for the avocado toast which was executed very well! Finally the atmosphere rounded out my fantastic experience. It felt contemporary and cozy without being stuffy a place Im sure many people hang out to work or chat. Huge windows let in plenty of light at all times of the day.No need to go anywhere else when you’re in Houston and in need a unique coffee experience or need a quick bit to eat!”

“I have to say the tacos in the food were delicious everything. I don't think anyone will complain on something that's has flavor. I'm thinking if this place has a long line. It's popular because of the good tasting food. They should do something about speeding up the line. But I guess Management has not thought about that. Has your business growth and it has more in more people coming. You should make plans to make the kitchen area larger with the buffet section larger. So you can have 2 extra servers. I'm assuming they made it investment in the parking lot next door which is huge and full of cars. Trust me this place is making money. Not complaining about the price, but this is not a dollar tacos. Those days are over. This location, and one Laredo on Patton Street street are making money. It would help if it also had a larger restroom to accommodate more than one person. It's a business not a home. I hope management reads this. And will maybe answer the review”

Backstreet Cafe 1103 S Shepherd Dr, Houston New American • $$

“Loved this breakfast spot! Flavor was amazing on everything except the coffee lol I asked for a pump of vanilla and it tasted as if they dumped the whole bottle of syrup in my coffee. The waitress easily exchanged for another coffee just as sweet so I sent it back all together. The Berry Chantilly crepe was amazing! The chicken tenders were crispy but I was expecting just a little more flavor. The presentation of the food and restaurant is amazing! And a great sunflower concept. Staff was nice and knowledgeable. We went on a Wednesday morning so it wasn't too busy but I'm sure on the weekends it's crazy. But nice thing is that they open early. My four stars is for the parking, it's terrible especially if they're busy and can be inconvenient if you park in the front. I'm happy to go back though.”

“Have been coming here for over 20 years and have never been disappointed. I've had their fajita, pastor, and barbacoa. All meats are very flavorful and delicious. Their quesadillas always hit the spot. Since my family is bigger now, we tend to get the special plate. It consists of a plate of meat with melted cheese on top and a stick of tortillas. If you're not a cheese person, you can get the regular plate, which is the meat and tortillas.”

Upon arrival, the hostess warmly greeted me, and I requested to sit at the bar. However, I wasn't acknowledged for another 10 minutes until I made eye contact with one of the bartenders named Cam. He promptly provided me with a drink and dinner menu. I also interacted with Franklin, who seemed quite introverted and not the best fit for the bar atmosphere. Despite that, Cam was very personable, funny, and had a down-to-earth personality, making my experience enjoyable. “We came here for a family celebration. Born and raised in Houston, I've had my share of amazing to okay bbq so naturally I like to try all the "top" rated BBQ places. .We arrived around 1130 on a Sunday. The wait wasn't terrible, maybe 15-20min. We rolled 15 deep so of course we placed a massive order. We ordered all the sides; chopped brisket sandwiches, brisket, turkey, for the kids, ribs dry and candied. You get the idea. The ribs were GREAT! The candied ribs were by far my favorite! The beans, potato salad, and slaw well someone was just heavy hamded on the salt. I get it, salt can sometime enhance the flavot but when my wedding ring starts to get tight on my finger bc of the amount salt in bo time flat, tikes If they could just lay off the salt mine, the potato salad would be spot on. The brisket was melt in your mouth cooked but it could have definitely used more seasoning the turkey was turkey and the rice cheese w/ jalapeño was literally cheese with jalapeño with a dash of rice. The texture reminded of cauliflower rice. Overall the family enjoyed their meal but I'll stick to my Triple J"s, Unfortunately Pinkerton won't ever come close to the Ol School Burns BBQ. Does that magic still exist in Houston? The search continues.”

“Despite having tried multiple AYCE sushi restaurants around the West Houston area, I was very surprised to have seen Sumo Sushi come up as one I hadn't been to. Over the years, many AYCE sushi places within the $20 range for lunch have appeared, and Sumo sushi is yet another one to have entered the market.Despite this, Sumo Sushi is doing something to set itself from the crowd. I went for their lunch price (which they also have on Saturdays) and enjoyed a wide selection of their appetizers, nigiri, and specialty rolls. One of the issues I noticed with some AYCE is the lack of fish quality and overbearing rice vinegar taste. None of these issues were present for Sumo Sushi. What's more, their deep fried appetizers tasted evenly cooked. This rang true when I tried their shrimp tempura roll, a roll I avoid commonly since the tempura battery is undercooked at some AYCE sushi restaurants. Our server, Tiffany, was also amazingly attentive, and ensured we never went a long duration without being able to order more.Overall, for $20, Sumo Sushi excels in providing excellent quality and value. They offer everything I feel competitors lack and don't seem to be plagued with common issues that come with a $20 AYCE. Of all of the AYCE I've been to (Taizzi, Sushi Masa, Sushi Ichi, J&J kitchen, Mikoto, Sushi 9, Sushi Haya) this is now my go-to AYCE sushi place.”

“Tiny Champions should be in everyone's rotation of go to restaurants. Not too fancy and stuffy while still being inventive and putting out food that is nuanced. We always pick two familiar dishes and get two new ones whenever we go out there. This time it was the Greens Pizza (the fanciest Cici's spinach pizza) and the braised butter beans for the familiar dishes. One note is reading braised butter beans on a menu may not sound the most appealing but it is consistently the most flavorful dish you will have there. The beans are really savory/creamy and there are crunchy croutons for a textural contrast. They also get some acid in there for a really good balanced bite. The new dishes this go around were the fried quail and the baked feta. The fried quail tasted like some of the best Korean fried chicken you could have. My only issue with that dish is that I need way more of it, like a whole bucket of it with a gallon of their fancy ranch. The baked feta was good, but not something I'd order again. Just not as flavorful as everything else.”

Crawfish Cafe 11209 Bellaire Blvd, Houston Cajun • $$

“Dined in on Sunday with a couple of friends and had Ryan as the server. He provided excellent servicing to my table despite the equipment supply issues that the store was experiencing. The atmosphere could use some improvements, particularly the AC, because it was extremely humid and hot in the dining are of the restaraunt. There was also an employee name Thanh that assisted in that making our experience enjoyable (bringing out our food extremely quick as well as condiments, gloves, bibs) especially for cleaning up the water spilled by another table nearby that manage to reach our seats and providing towels as well as a mat to my friend who had sat down on the chair with water on it and got their pants wet.The Food was outstanding, not much of a seafood person so I can't comment on their crawfish, shrimp and other boiled seafood options but absolutely love their Fish sauce and salt & pepper flavor wings, so much that I had to get several orders for takeout to eat later when I got home; was assisted by an employee in the front (unfortunately I didn't ask for their name but it was an Asian male employee).Parking: Much easier to find if you park in the back; where the curbside sign is. The restaraunt is inside Hong Kong City Mall right next to the Ocean Palace restaraunt”

“Really cute date night spot. This place has a nice elegant flare to it. Getting a reservation is highly recommended. Bar seating and outdoor seating are also available. The outdoor area is right by a small park and really nice to eat on a warm day. Lots of options available. Some Portuguese influence with their selection of port wines which is unique within this Indian style restaurant. If you have dietary restrictions such as gluten free, they have a separate menu but you need to ask for it. The main menu does clearly label vegan and vegetarian options. I’d recommend getting a few items to share as it is encouraged to eat family style. I tried the chili tofu and chana masala. Both were delicious.Vegetarian options: All vegetarian and vegan items are marked on the menu.Dietary restrictions: Separate gluten free menu”

Not only did we have options but the food was very good. We had so many things : pizza, pasta, egg roll, plantain nachos, and yucca fries. We were a little loud (6 kids under 10) but the service was kind and patient -- even when one spilled a full glass of water . They even took a picture of us as a group and made sure my boys were smiling. Overall --- great food, excellent service and overall good experience . “My recent visit to Mo' Better Brews offered a mixed experience regarding their vegan offerings. While the menu provides all vegan options, I noticed that most of the food appeared unhealthy due to being fried and overly greasy. Although the portions were generous, the excessive oiliness overshadowed the flavors and enjoyment. On the positive side, the ambiance was cozy, and the staff was kind and friendly. However, as someone who appreciates variety and healthier alternatives, the lack of options in that regard may limit the menu's overall appeal.”
