“When we come to Calistoga, we always stop here. The food is good, the atmosphere is great. We love that they have live music. When we were there, there was an excellent jazz guitarist.
I had a smoked salmon sandwich with salad and my husband had a burger and fries.
The beer selection is wide, and we're always able to find something we like.“

“I still recommend but have to say disappointed today in a few items. 1. the coleslaw flavor was fine but now is minced so small it feels like you are eating baby food and tastes bland 2. the cornbeef was surprisingly on the dry side 3. cheesecake totally dry crust and flavor just average and strawberry topping soggy 4. soup was terrific the quality of food seems to be going down and that’s sad“

“Story time- Long ago, in the tiny town of Guerneville, there was an ice cream parlor tucked inside an old bank building. It was there that I experienced one of my all-time favorite dessert collaborations: ice cream paired with pies from Chile Pies Baking Company. You'd walk in, choose your slice, top it with the perfect scoop, and live your best à la mode life. It was summer magic.
Then Chile Pies took over the restaurant space at Dr. Wilkinson's Backyard Resort & Mineral Springs, and my pie × ice cream era ended.
I've been following House of Better for a while, but it took an absolutely INSANE promotion to get me through the doors: dine at the property and receive a free midweek pool pass to the resort. The hotel may not have loved that deal... but I certainly did. (I went twice.)
First Visit
- Salsa tasting flight ($14): Really good, creative variety, but not enough chips at first. Thankfully, they happily refilled the basket.
- Kale & Maitake Omelet ($19): Recommended as a staff favorite. Unfortunately, we wouldn't order this again. It was surprisingly flavorless, and the accompanying salad felt like an afterthought. If you're here focused on health and wellness, you might love this.
- Slice of signature apple & green chile pie ($8): I wanted nostalgia. Sadly, it didn't transport me back.
- Green chile stew, veggie style ($10/cup): My friend loved this.
- Red chile chicken posole ($10/cup): So good I considered ordering it again on my second visit.
Second Visit
- Crispy taco plate ($25): A ton of food and genuinely great value, grilled chicken. Super satisfying.
- Arnold Palmer ($5): Simple, refreshing, perfect poolside energy.
What I love about House of Better is the format: order at the counter, grab your number, settle in. It's easy, casual, and especially ideal for groups.
You do not have to be a hotel guest to eat here. And if you're eyeing pool or spa access without booking a stay, check out ResortPass.“
