“I keep thinking this friendly English pub is a lot older than it is, like from the Barbary Coast days. But no, it opened only in 1991 which means I was old enough to have a pint in here back then. Meantime, The Pig & Whistle is among the most familiar and reasonably priced watering holes in the city. It's a place I can pop by as I traverse Geary from the Richmond. I have yet to eat here as I rarely have a hankering in the middle of the afternoon for bangers & mash. However, their menu is a lot more robust and well-rounded with burgers and even Mexican parmigiana, so yes, I should try the food. I'm more lured by the cheap but potent drinks... Like the $5.50 Tequila Sunrise (photo: Lately kind bartender Chris has been making me the $7.50 'Espresso' Martini where he substitutes espresso with coffee and coffee liqueur (photo: Delicious. A rotating crew of regulars hoist their pints, and they definitely add to the pub's "Cheers"-like vibe. DRINKS - 4 stars...cheap and the faux-espresso martini is a winner AMBIANCE - 4 stars...friendly British-style space SERVICE - 4.5 stars...Chris is an expert bartender TOTAL - 4 stars...where everyone knows your name RELATED - Exploring the Richmond? “If you take a look from the outside you might keep walking. Big mistake. Everyone was super friendly, ran into mostly locals grabbing fresh beers. Excellent selection on tap, and beer/shot combo specials that didn't break the bank. They have pool in the back. It isn't the best pool hall I've ever seen, but well maintained for the average Joe throwing back cold ones. I would definitely go back here to chat up the friendly staff and cap off a night out.“

“Kensington Circus Pub is such a hidden gem & most certainly one of our favorite neighborhood places to tuck into. It's not only a fun place to watch a game with friends, but also just for date night to cozy up to the bar for comfort food, a cocktail or freshly poured Guinness, and conversation. Love the British pub feel! Food highlights: corn fritters, thick cut fries, the clam chowder, Caesar salad, Shepherds pie, fish tacos, tuna melt, B.L.A.T. (bacon, lettuce, avocado, tomato), and thick cut pork chop to name a few. As you can see, we've been eating here for a few years - the food is always consistent, fresh, hearty portions, and honestly there's such a variety it keeps the overall ordering experience just so fun! The servers make you feel like family and the ambience is lively, especially when sports are on or live entertainment (check their website for the event calendar). We recently stopped in on a weekend evening for dessert, drinks, and music. They have what's called "England's most popular sticky toffee pudding" with a tagline that reads "so good that we have it flown in"...omg they aren't joking! It's so delicious - warm, in a bath of butterscotch sauce with vanilla ice cream and whip cream...yum! Can't rave about this community joint enough - with indoor/outdoor seating, kiddo/dog approved, ample areas for street parking, we'll see ya again for tunes and toffee pudding soon!“

Fort Point Ferry Building Bar • $$

“Beer is always best fresh, and I thoroughly enjoyed my weekday lunch visit. It's basically just a kiosk take out window in front of the Ferry Building. Lots of seating, both in the shade and in the sun. They have maybe 8 taps plus a decent selection of cans. I wasn't sure what I wanted, so the bartender was nice enough to walk me through a few different beers with samples and descriptions. I settled on the ANIMAL IPA with my empanada.“

“Renewed interest when I saw their Instagram post about allowing friendly dogs inside. My friend was dog sitting and took our dog over to the confusion of the workers who said there was just a dog brawl the week before and didn't know the owner had made that post. They let him stay though, and our dog were the only one, so she got all the attention. Today there is one dog at the bar and two out on the parklet. My husband and I were third in line to "seat ourselves" at 6:45pm on a Friday in February. The couple in front of us left and we were next because the party of 4 wanted a booth. We were seated at the end of the long copper table meant for groups. We have been here with a larger group before. The only annoying thing about this seat is that some people who are impatient hover above you while they wait for a table. The waitstaff is efficient. They take your order and clear your table quickly. The check is paid with handheld machine and it's now a cashless restaurant. There are four tvs for sports lovers. Three over the bar and one in the "dining area." There are a few parklet tables, and some tables in the windows, which open during nice weather. Very convenient location across from Rockridge BART. Otherwise you can pay for street parking or find free residential parking. There are two unisex restroom, one hidden in the dining corner, and the other towards the kitchen. There is a full bar and happy hour. You can sign up for their email list or social media to keep up on events, but they regularly have karaoke and trivia. If you walk by, they will have posters on their windows. We have been here only occasionally over the last 10 years of living in Rockridge. Today we had the deviled eggs, which come six in a plate and are well formed. The cheeseburger is juicy but too bready for my liking. The fries have that double crisp crust trend that showed up some decade ago for no good reason, but ketchup helps everything. There is a caddy full of all kinds of condiments for the table. We also had the Caesar kale salad, which is very big. The chicken cubes are juicy but the crispy garbanzos aren't too cohesive. We asked for a takeout box and it was compostable and came to the table for us to self pack. Kid friendly so there were some kids during our visit. Neighborhood bar and grill. Nothing mind blowing but a good staple to have in the area. There is wifi available, check the menu on the wall for the password.“

“I finally took the time to come to Cornerstone Berkeley. It was surprisingly empty when I came in, with only 4 other customers inside. I had the Avocado Burger with fries and 2 beers (Cornerstone Blonde). They tasted great. I also liked the 4 TV hanging above the bar area, where you can watch several different sporting events. When I went to the restroom, I noticed the concert area for the live shows. Rather small for a concert area for my tastes, but if I ever see an event to my liking, I will try to come. The staff was friendly and helpful, big shout out to them. I will try to come at a later hour on my next trip here, just to see the larger crowd that come here.“

“A block off the main strip but I really liked it here with a fun bar menu. The gentleman helping me was very nice... --I initially wanted the espresso martini on the menu with tequila. However, it seemed that it was already premade. A lot of places that I've been to just leave it at that but the bartender took it upon himself to make it with a little twist. So that was pretty cool. It started to get crowded after a while but he was attentive and kept checking up.The drinks were really delicious.Usually, I try a special cocktail and then resort to tequila sodas after. But I had a few of these bad boys, perfectly crafted.I didn't try any of the food but they had a selection of salads, corn dogs, etc.I'm not in the city too often but I'd definitely come back here again if in the area.“

Fishbowl Bar & Grill Bar • $
1854 Divisadero St, San Francisco - 11.38 miles

“I love the fishbowl. Especially nights with Sienna, Jay, and Kai. Sure it's a hole in the wall, but they have some fryers that make you forget about the 3 fishbowls you drank, and the drunken tears you shed with some homeless dude on pine who you gave a cigarette just so he would listen. I've loved my nights at the fishbowl, especially the ones where I've seen Blake get punched.(if you're a regular you know this man is the worst human being but thinks he can get away with everything because he works for Apple) Go into the bowl, give it a shot. And take a shot for me while you're there.“
