“Got a great parking spot across the street in front of Now Valley Bakery, which is not always the case on 24th Street. We were meeting friends there in the back outdoor area. TVs at every booth and you just ask the server to change the channel - we wanted to see the Giants. Midday beers on St Patrick’s Day weekend and it was lovely out. Lots of locals go there, so we saw a few friends. Service was great and I was introduced to the Black Velvet: Prosecco and Guinness! Sounds kind of awful but it was great. Our server was Shanna and she’s so much fun and works hard. Took great care of us!“

“Taking the N-Judah out to Ocean Beach, I find myself walking south on the paved walkway along the Great Highway trying to avoid zealous joggers and bicyclists. Not easy given how rude some people like to get. By the time I get to Taraval, I'm ready to make a left and head back into the city. However, before I set off on my journey back, I sometimes make the very first stop available right here. But only after 3PM because that's when they open. It's a surprisingly large space for a tavern, but the wood paneling, brick fireplace sometimes with a roaring fire, and overall old timey vibe make it feel cozier. I'm usually on the early side, so it was just me and the lone bartender. I've ordered the $12 Mama P's Shaken Pina Colada which always surprises me to see a tiki drink way out on the edge of the Sunset (photo: It's a mix of Malibu coconut rum, cream, and pineapple juice shaken and served over ice. Simple but quite tasty even on a brisk day. Recently I took advantage of their holiday menu and ordered the reassuring $12 Nutty Hot Chocolate with Baileys and Frangelico (photo: My one takeaway here is that it's definitely a locals' hangout, so when they trickled in, I felt very much the outsider. If I came later for an event, I would think that might offset that isolated feeling. DRINKS - 4 stars...not the best tiki cocktail I've had but I like that they make it AMBIANCE - 4 stars...cozy, vintage feel offset by the exclusivity vibe from the regulars SERVICE - 4.5 stars...the bartender is always cordial TOTAL - 4 stars...a nice find way out west RELATED - Exploring the Sunset? “Haven't been to the neighborhood Irish pub in a while so went to grab lunch on a cloudy Saturday with a friend. The door was closed to keep in the heat but from across the street I thought it might be closed at first and worried it was another business closing in SF. Happily it was just due to the cold temperatures recently and we waited until 2pm for the dinner menu to become available as we watched the many sports games that were on. Ordered the corned beef and cabbage which came with potatoes, carrots, and brown bread. The corned beef fell apart easily in my mouth with a salty sweetness and the cream sauce worked well with all the vegetables. There were many dogs that were taking their owners for walks who came to say hi from a huge Anatolian to a wide bullmastiff to a bichon frise (had to look that one up) who were enjoying the pub. The two bartender/servers were busy but attentive and even the outside tables were filling up as we were leaving since it was starting to get warmer. Will be back for more food, drinks, and sports and to people watch seated outside when the weather gets warmer.“

“I keep thinking this friendly English pub is a lot older than it is, like from the Barbary Coast days. But no, it opened only in 1991 which means I was old enough to have a pint in here back then. Meantime, The Pig & Whistle is among the most familiar and reasonably priced watering holes in the city. It's a place I can pop by as I traverse Geary from the Richmond. I have yet to eat here as I rarely have a hankering in the middle of the afternoon for bangers & mash. However, their menu is a lot more robust and well-rounded with burgers and even Mexican parmigiana, so yes, I should try the food. I'm more lured by the cheap but potent drinks... Like the $5.50 Tequila Sunrise (photo: Lately kind bartender Chris has been making me the $7.50 'Espresso' Martini where he substitutes espresso with coffee and coffee liqueur (photo: Delicious. A rotating crew of regulars hoist their pints, and they definitely add to the pub's "Cheers"-like vibe. “If you're looking for a "Cheers"-type tavern with regulars who look epoxied to their seats and an interior heavy on vintage atmosphere, this neighborhood bar fits the bill. It's been in the same location since Prohibition was repealed, and the history of the bar is described in meticulous detail on the pub's website. This is definitely no trendy pick-up joint for Gen Z drop-ins. As you might expect, they have a robust calendar of events encompassing bingo, trivia, live music, and dance parties. However, more important to me, they make a half-dozen specialty cocktails and a half-dozen Bloody Mary variations.
