“I've been visiting this hidden gem for over a decade, and I can confidently say that their bánh mì remains some of the best I’ve ever had in Chinatown! The #1 option with cold cuts and Vietnamese-style meatloaf is incredibly flavorful. I might be mistaken, but I detect a lovely smoky note that elevates the entire sandwich.

I ordered grilled cheese sandwich and onion rings. Postmates delivered matzoball soup and rings. Johnny’s customer service lady (didn’t offer name) and the manager refused all responsibility for the wrong item they mispacked; she told me to take it up with Postmates. OK, but meanwhile can I get my sandwich that Johnny’s failed on? “Take it up with Postmates.” When I questioned that logic from a customer service perspective she said “you’re failing to understand!” and told me “don’t get an attitude with me!” I replied “an attitude with YOU?” and she hung up on me. Thank you @Lokal.Venice & @YelpLA for introducing me to this neighborhood gem. Sarah, Julia and the Westside Yelp team knocked another one out of the ballpark - the second this week!

Vanessa at the counter was friendly and knowledgeable. She contrasted that this location was full service with drinks and a more extensive menu.

I opted for the vegetarian and she directed me to the tofu lemongrass banh mi. I was already coffee’d out after opening day of dayglow coffee in Venice earlier in the AM, so I opted for Thai iced tea. It comes with 2 non dairy options, almond and oat. Vanessa made the dealers choice of oat milk.

It took less than 10 minutes to get a fresh banh mi, as we sipped the Thai iced tea that was out in a minute.

Thai iced tea was sweet but not too sweet, and oat milk made it less heavy than dairy. It had a refreshing quality to it, and that distinct flavor of tea.

What makes a good banh mi great is the baguette. This one had a nice crunch, had just the right amount of vegan mayo to not make it soggy. You know it’s legit when you get oodles of cilantro, jalapeño and that distinct sweet spicy kick of carrots and other veggies. The tofu was lightly fried and soaked in all the flavor. It wasn’t too lemongrassy but in combination with the bread and pickled veggies, packed a punch. Overall some of the better banh mi I’ve had. It tasted fresh and was satisfying. I really appreciated their choice of hot sauce that did not have additives and other nasty fillers.

Overall a solid experience when craving the Vietnamese French sandwich, which I do often. I will be back to try their burger and some of Vanessa’s favorites on the menu: Cubano, Korean bbq banh mi and the vegan burger.

Tip: The restroom is clean but needs a key.

Tip: Check out the lunch special from 8 am to 4 pm. At $15 for OG Burger, fries and a beer it’s the best deal in town.“

“Love the extra toppings on the subs. Family got the cold cut and pastrami. The smalls were plenty big for everyone. Wish more places put that much pickles /tomatoes etc on theirs!

Very busy the whole time we were there. But they were fast and friendly. Prepare for cash only ( no higher then 20's).

They could put a little effort into upgrading the seating area. A relative says it's looked like that since he was a kid about 40yes ago.

“First time here yesterday and happy to keep coming back, had the hot pastrami sub and it was seriously good loved the mayo mustard combo with chopped tomato onion and pickles combined and layered generously over the whole sub Also had the Tonys special sub .. lots of fresh and tasty deli meats mortadella hams salamis and again the in-house mustard mayo combo .. awesome sandwich For a side I had the bow tie pasta which was cooked al dente with plenty of the marinated artichoke hearts and a great authentic Italian feel and flavour As this had now developed into leftovers for dinner given the size of it all I took us home a tiramisu for dessert later, and as with everything else well worth the eating Opened in 1979 and still going strong .. it’s easy to see why“

The ingredients are always crisp, flavorful, and satisfying. When I’m not in the mood for salad, the Peruvian steak sandwich is my go-to, absolutely delicious and packed with flavor.

The staff here are always friendly, welcoming, and quick to help, which makes every visit even more enjoyable. Parking is located in the back. While the lot isn’t huge, it’s manageable, and you get one hour free if you let the parking attendant know you’re dining at Mendocino Farms, just a small extra step for a great meal.
