“Sometimes you need a mid day cider, or beer, or wine... you know where I'm going with this. Came in on a Thursday afternoon for some me time, and was shocked at myself for never seeing this place. Redfield will now definitely be a staple. The shop itself is super cute with relaxing music - you know to make work just a bit more bearable. The selection of cider is amazing - and having that hot cider on a chilly day is a must do this fall! I recommend the Mission Trail Cherries - It's the perfect amount of sweet and boozy, and the color is beautiful! It was described to me as kind of like a port but in cider form and being aged in a barrel (I can't remember what kind of barrel) - so just the right thing for me. Over all 10/10! Great drinks, friendly staff, and you can even buy some bottles for to go! Do yourself a favor - get a drink this weekend and if you're cold - get a hot cider.“

Banter Wine Bar • $$
10368 San Pablo Ave, El Cerrito - 7.18 miles

Customers` Favorites

Chardonnay

“Amidst the bustling traffic in El Cerrito, there's a hidden gem and a recent addition to the area. Blink and you'll miss it. Even during a brief pause at a stop light when there's a chance to look around, it's highly probable that you'll still miss it. There's no signage on the building itself, so look for the wine barrels sitting on the sidewalk as your clue, or perhaps you'll spot their small sandwich board just outside their front door. Find parking somewhere near 10368 San Pablo Avenue, the address to Banter, a wine bar with a warm atmosphere, welcoming decor, and communal tables. Offering a curated selection of old and new world wines, Banter focuses on small producers who prioritize minimal intervention from vineyard to bottle. On location, you can purchase a bottle from the shelves to enjoy at home or savor a glass (or bottle) in-house. If you need something to eat while you're there, choose from various delicious snacks including cheese, charcuterie, and other tasty treats. During the pandemic, while drinking wine and eating cheese in their backyard, owners Claire and Devin were inspired to open a wine bar, but they wanted their wine bar to feel like "home," - comfy, casual, no frills, just...chill. A collection of cozy couches in the back creates an ambiance reminiscent of enjoying a drink in the living room of your most stylish friend. Classic VHS tapes and 80's knick-knacks are precariously stacked high next to small vintage TVs playing films that will take you back in time. When I was last there the original Flash Gordon was playing. You probably won't get to hear any of the movie dialogue because the bar is spinning LPs from an ever-expanding vinyl collection, fueled by contributions from patrons. A pinball machine in the back room adds to the decor's nostalgic charm and provides an entertaining distraction between pours. With a partial kitchen, Banter partners with local talent and the community to create new opportunities by featuring "pop-ups" - temporary restaurants that allow chefs and restaurateurs to try out a new neighborhood, experiment with their menu, generate a following, or just get some great experience for their staff. During my most recent visit, I got a front-row seat at the bar to witness Chef Emmanual from the restaurant Bolita work his magic with fresh masa, a must-have ingredient at the center of all his signature dishes. Most notable was the Tamal de Calabaza which featured squash masa, mole negro tamal, roasted kabocha, and cashew crema. A nice compliment was the Papas Rositazadas, simple roasted potatoes with black garlic aioli. Both were deliciously elevated and beautifully plated for such a casual environment. Unfortunately by the time you read this Bolita would have moved on to their next location but you can track them down on their website at www.bolitamasa.com. Banter will continue to feature pop-ups and to find out what's in store next visit their location or follow their Instagram @banter_winebar. As temporary as the pop-up food concept is, Banter is hopefully here for good as they focus on what's most important, which is most fittingly stated by the intentionally sloppy, hand-painted sign in front, "Bad Signs, Good Wigns!"“

“Live Band Karaoke with THE LOST WEEkENDs was exceptionally fun! The band are VERY talented musicians and they work hard to give each 'guest' singer a good experience. The crowd at the IVY ROOM was very supportive (and forgiving!) and the staff was enthusiastic, and charming as usual.Aside from the live band part, it differed from regular karaoke in that the lyrics you are reading do not alert you to a starting point where you should start singing. They ARE on anIpad, but it's pretty much just the same as holding a piece of paper with lyrics printed on it. I suggest going to the band's website, finding the link to their list of Karaoke covers and practicing a little with a YouTube karaoke video of that song beforehand-if you don't know the song you want to perform really well already.I can't wait to go back, I hope the LosT WeeKends return to The Ivy Room soon !“

“I enjoy Boathouse and the small town vibes it gives. There is a chill atmosphere, they have good drinks and attentive bartenders (Janet + Christian). The only downside is that I don't enjoy when there is that guitar guy there randomly strumming songs in the background. They turn all of the music off and it makes it low key uncomfortable and really puts the vibe in an odd place. The guitar guy doesn't sing, he doesn't play entire songs and he doesn't even play songs that are fun/exciting/good bar vibes. This is an entirely too huge downfall because atmosphere and music in a bar play an insurmountable part in the success and continuity of business. I actually left when the man started playing his guitar again because it was honestly really odd and just put the whole mood. I will definitely return and I sincerely hope that I don't accidentally come on another night where this random man is playing his guitar at random parts of the night. I would literally walk out again if that happened haha. No hate to guitar man it's just weird that they shut off the entire bar music to let this dude strum his guitar in background. Also the kitchen was closed but they served select folks in the bar, which I was not one of and I was hungry. Hopefully they standardize the rules and entertainment. Cheers!!“

“The Barbary is one of the best cocktail bars in Oakland, bar none. The prices range from $13-$16 per cocktail. My partner said this place has the best Old Fashioned they've ever had. I'm a fan of the Spice Trader and the Black Tot Grog. Don't let the prices deter you; the quality makes it worthwhile. The pirate/nautical theme has good ambiance. It's not overbearing, but definitely not something you can overlook. I'd call it cute and whimsical, and I appreciate that the art on the walls was bought from small artists on Etsy. It vaguely reminds me of the vibe on Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean ride. Like, a little homemade and dated but done with love and extreme attention to detail. On weekends they have live music, often jazz, and it's been good stuff every time I came here. The staff is all great. Owners are often on-site. “Wow, this bar felt quite hidden away from the world behind gray doors despite being on a busy commercial stretch of Lakeshore. There was a cat sign, but Jamie W. and I kept missing it as we strolled back and forth just before it opened at 4PM. When we finally entered, it was a stylish space but overly so with vintage accents producing the requisite chill atmosphere. Let me be honest though. We came for the craft cocktails we saw on their website, and Keenan was the cool bartender who was there to make them for us. I tried the $14 Dear Irene, a blended Pina Colada riff with gin, coconut, ginger, mint, cane, and lime. A lovely libation. Jamie had the $14 Blue Meanie which had a more tantalizing tropical taste. It had a nice kick consisting of eight-year-old Haitian & Banana Rum, Giffard Coconut, lime, and blue curaçao (photo: So satisfying that we had another round. I went with the $14 E&E, a vibrant mix of tequila, mezcal, lime, cilantro, pineapple, and jalapeño over rocks. It was like a short margarita. Jamie tried the $14 Mata Hari, which sounds more mysterious than it was. It left out tequila and mixed mezcal, amaro nardini, lime, and tamarind syrup into a saucy, south-of-the-border libation (photo: While Dear Irene was the definitive standout, all the cocktails provided a nice symphony of compatible flavors. Otherwise I was just drunk. Either way, it made for a satisfying visit at this hidden hideaway close to Lake Merritt. Nice guys too when we had a chance to chat in between sets.Chicken Sammie buffalo style was pretty good - large though, went home with leftovers! Super sturdy bread which was delicious.“

“This is such a unique place, with a super fun & special ambiance. The beer/drink offerings do underwhelm a bit, but the environment and special events they run regularly are enough to make up for it.The bar staff have always been friendly and attentive in my visits here, so no complaints on the service.“

“great place. friendly staff, great and quality drinks, and great and quality food. only downsides, not the biggest place and easy to miss if you're driving by. also, small place so you may leave smelling of fried food. guac and chips, nice. avocados super fresh queso and chips, fire. haven't had queso this good in I dunno how long shrimp with asparagus with rice, bold flavors. very savory dish, recommended if you want garlic, saucy, and shrimp. overall, highly recommended and would frequent often if I'm in the area.“

“I love this little bar, it's hidden on the side of some corporate building but has such cozy vibes. I wish I knew of it sooner. I got 2 cocktails although not gonna lie I can't remember the names but they were both super tasty. Everyone in my group loved their drinks. The bartender was so friendly too. We also got their empanadas and honestly kind of fire. It was the perfect after work drink type of bar.“

“Great selection of top notch beers on tap and many more in bottle. The bar tender was knowledgeable and helpful in making selections. It has the feeling of an off the path rathskeller in Germany. Prices on bottled offerings can get high as some are rare or uncommon in the US. We did not try any food. They post their taps on the Untapped app. A great place to try a beer you might not find anywhere else and have good conversation with a friend.Parking: Metered start parking with extended meter hours.“

“I recently dined at the Walnut Creek Yacht Club and came away with mixed feelings. On the plus side, the food is always well-prepared, a testament to the kitchen's consistency and skill. The Chelsea Gem oysters were a standout, arriving at the table perfect in every way and setting a high bar for the rest of the meal. However, not all dishes reached this level of excellence. The halibut with citrus butter, while very good, didn't quite live up to expectations, lacking a certain special touch that would make it memorable. Similarly, the clam pasta fell short of the mark. It was quite bland and suffered from an overabundance of butter, overshadowing the clams themselves. In summary, while there are definite highlights like the impeccable Chelsea Gem oysters, some offerings could benefit from a bit more inspiration and balance. The Walnut Creek Yacht Club has the potential for greatness, but a little more attention to the flavor profiles of some dishes would go a long way.3.5 stars.“

“Lobster Ravioli is no joke !! So delectable !!!!! Had it two times this week ! Love this spot still haven’t had drinks from here ! But boy is the food good ! If u like ur sauce on the thicker side add extra parmigiana cheese but .. it’s really not needed!! Dip ??that ??bread ??in the sauce?❤️ Idk what’s better the sauce or ravioli but so good to the point my dad made me go get more ? But the crab cakes are great too ! As well as the crab sandwich I advise you to get it grilled chesse style tho and no avocado! ? I’ll be back !!! ?“
