I don't normally write reviews, but I had to this time. The Truckee food scene is modest at best. Most restaurants range from bad to mediocre, with a few notable exceptions, such as The Drunken Monkey and Moody's. Last year I would have included the Dining Room at Village Lodge in the "perfectly fine" category.But my wife and I went to dinner there last night (Jan 2024), and it was immediately clear that something had changed. Take the Gondola directly to the restaurant. You can not drive directly to the lodge. The free gondola ride was fun!! It's a pretty quick ride down to the lodge. The pink sunset was picturesque. The gondola runs until Midnight. The restaurant was cozy and rustic. Decorated with great old photos of times past. We walked through a fireplace room and into the dining room. The Lodge staff has really hit their stride and the extra half dozen feet did the base (and the length of the season) good. The chef and his sous are on fire. We finally have a regular order after a few runs through the menu: Steelhead Duck l'Orange Steak Tartare Carrot harissa salad And the Sticky (Toffee) Pudding But we will continue to come here for the service and the people. Special shout out to Brandon, Joseph, Rosa, Jefferson.
