50 Best Pizza Restaurants near Durham

“So on my way home and I’m starving but I’m in Durham and it’s almost 9:00 pm so I pull into Carmines and the guys r outside. I walk up and they say r u picking up and I’m like no I wanted one of the frozen pies in the case. Sorry register is all closed. Ok thanks anyway I said and one of the chefs hands me one of his pies and says enjoy. Love you guys at Carmines.“

“I've been quite impressed every time I've grabbed something with these guys! First time tested out with slices which were good, then had a surprisingly good penne alla vodka with shrimp- which were cooked to perfection, and tonight I got a Ceaser salad with shrimp and some wings- all really good! The shrimp again was very flavorful and not overcooked. I'm glad they're nearby because Brasa Bella will definitely become a staple for us! 😁 Support your local small businesses!!“

“There’s something about Main Street in Middletown that I really enjoy. On any given day it has this eclectic, culturally diverse vibe that makes it feel alive. Tibetan restaurants. Vegan spots. Italian. Mexican. Coffee shops and pastry counters.

On this particular day the sun was out, the sidewalks were busy, and people from all walks of life were strolling the street. It’s the kind of place where you can just sit for a bit, soak it all in, and watch the world go by.

Today we decided to stop into a new place: Middletown Halal Grill & Pizza.

We tried two pies: a classic cheese and a Philly cheesesteak pizza.

Both were excellent.

Everything started with a really flavorful crust. Nice balance of crisp on the outside with just the right amount of chew inside. The sauce was well balanced too. Not overly sweet, not acidic, just a nicely seasoned tomato sauce that let the other flavors shine.

The cheese pizza was simple and well executed. Cheese evenly distributed and melted perfectly, giving that smooth, creamy texture you want in a good slice.

The Philly pizza used the same base and added shaved steak, peppers, and onions. Great combination. No single ingredient trying to steal the show. Everything worked together.

They also offered a side of house-made tzatziki sauce for the Philly.

Now I know what you’re thinking… putting a cold white sauce on hot pizza can get you some funny looks. But trust me on this one. It worked. The tzatziki was made in-house, light, refreshing, and added a cool contrast to the rich steak and cheese.

Bonus points: the dough is made fresh daily.

The place itself is a cool little spot. Nothing fancy. Very unassuming. But sometimes those are the best places. A perfect stop to grab a pie, sit for a bit, people watch on Main Street, or catch up with friends over good food.

The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive, which always makes the experience better.

They offer a variety of other items too, wings, grinders, and more. Everything on the menu is Halal, meaning no pork. And honestly, that’s fine by me. This time I stuck with the pizzas, but next time I’m definitely going to try some of their Halal meats.

Solid pizza. Friendly people. Great Main Street vibe.

“My son and I went today for lunch. I have been wanting a pistachio martini since I saw it made from the happy bartender with the huge smile. I didn’t get her name but see her on the Christos fb videos. Did not disappoint was delicious. She is a great bartender and a wonderful waitress l. We sat in the bar area and it was enjoyable as it wasn’t loud and the table gave us plenty of room for our meal. Brussels Sprouts were delicious as always I had a Cajun wrap and my son had a huge salad loaded with chicken and avocado 🥑 I remember Christos when it was in the plaza and the food never disappoints. I also enjoy the daily family specials text to me. If you haven’t signed up to get the daily specials text to you do it. So many great meals to pick up and bring home. There’s two different specials. Every day lunch and dinner. Give Christos a try if you haven’t been you won’t be disappointed. I live in West Haven but my son is lucky enough to live in North Haven and pick up from Christos on his way home from Westport.“

It’s so delicious that it has become my mission to drive from Stamford to Middletown to pick it up! I was with my toddler and I obviously wasn’t going to leave her in the car and I didn’t really want to take her out of the car seat and put her back in two minutes later. “Have not been there in 30 years several owners ago. My wife and I went on Sunday and had a great lunch. She had the calzone and I had a gyro. Best gyro I have had in a very long time. “Can’t even believe how Abe from this restaurant spoke to me! I ordered a pizza for my kids and it came without sauce and when I called to explain, it was nothing but RUDENESS! He had the audacity to tell me I had to apologize to him and his counter girl before he would replace. He told me he didn’t care if he lost a customer, I had no idea who he was. He hung up on me and when I called back and asked for the owner to explain he started yelling and had his employees in the background yelling he was the boss and I had no idea who I was talkin to and I should find out before talking to him and hung up on me again! “My husband and I ordered a pizza to go from Carini’s for the first time under their new management. We ordered the Smog pizza. It had sausage, mushrooms, peppers and onions as toppings. The pizza was absolutely delicious! It had just the right amount of mozzarella. The sausage was so tasty and the mushrooms, onions, and peppers were fresh and cooked perfectly. Having grown up in New Haven, I loved that the crust was on the thinner side. I highly recommend Carini’s! We look forward to ordering more pizza or stopping in for dinner some night!“

“Sfogliatelle! They offer it frozen! Get it, pop it in your air fryer until golden brown and enjoy feeling like you are in heaven. It’s filled fully with great quality cheese and orange peel. It’s frozen so you can keep it on hand and feel free to lie to your friends that you made it. Best enjoyed alone with a cup of coffee on a quiet morning.“
