“Years ago I ordered a coffee here. It was single origin that they prepare fresh. I asked for half and half on the side.

Five minutes later the coffee comes out and I say, “oh could I get that half and half?”

The barista looks at me sideways and says, “did you want to try it first?”

I mimed drinking and enthusiastically enjoying it, then said, “can I get that half and half?”

All this to say, they’re intense, but they care about their coffee. Its for the better.

“My friend told me about Shaw's Coffee half a year ago. As a regional coffee connoisseur, I added it to my STL coffee list and popped in one random day.

The building itself is stunning, the high ceilings and gorgeous tin ceiling make it feel cozy even on the rainiest of days. There are a handful of tables inside and outside of Shaw's and can be hard to score on the weekend. I suggest asking a lone person at a 4 top if they wouldn't mind sharing as the customers are overall friendly.

My favorite days at Shaw's are when Shane roasts the coffee beans 🫘 right in front of you. The whole store smells like coffee heaven and makes me want to purr like a contented cat. I wish they would do talks about roasting, the process and machine etc. But maybe that is just me being a nerd.

The bariastas are so patient, friendly and kind! When the seasonal drinks change they are always helpful to recommend what they like (which I enjoy !). Order a coffee flight! Try all the delicious seasonal varieties and then try them again a few weeks later when the newest flavors change over.

My mom forgot she had changed her mind from biscuits and gravy to a different meal, and she initially asked if she would be getting gravy before I reminded her she had changed her mind on her order. The cook immediately brought out gravy, free of charge. We were humbled and very impressed! Thank you for a great experience for us out of towners. :)“

“My family and I are visiting St Louis and stopped in Cafe de Blaire for some ice cream. It was homemade and delicious. On top of that, the owner was sooo kind and warm to my kids. She gave me a sample of a coffee drink and it was delicious. I went back today for more coffee. The other worker was there and also very kind. I am a coffee snob and both drinks I tried were GOOD. “Nice cozy setting that’s good for catching up with friends or getting some studying/work done. Coffee tasted pretty good but food (lunch) was kind of meh. We got chipotle chicken sandwich and turkey pesto club. The chicken was bland and kind of chewy in places. The turkey club was below average. It wasn’t toasted and didn’t even have a slice of tomato. Pesto was minimal with pretty boring nonexistent flavors. Might go back to try some breakfast and more coffee.“

I spent more time chatting it up with the baristas than waiting for my coffee and it was so fun every time. “The Kaldis here is a bit expensive but it's a convenient place to grab coffee and a snack. Some of the staff aren't always friendly but the manager with the long beard is always very kind! The MCC building other than that houses different offices and other employee areas for WASHU people. Really nice building inside and out.“
