“I tried a slice of their rainbow cake at Penelope's Vegan Taqueria a couple of years ago, and honestly, it was the best cake I’ve ever had. I’m not usually a big cake person myself, but this one completely changed my mind. It wasn’t overly sweet, and it was incredibly moist.
I planned to save the slice for when I got back home since I live four hours away. I ended up eating the whole thing before I even left Chicago. If that doesn’t say how amazing it is, I don’t know what does.“

“Always loved their Greek pastries, they are the best, started going to them 60 yrs ago with my mom and dad. We were always going to Hellas for our parties baptisms and weddings. All our holiday needs were easily available for us. Unfortunately, we moved out to Poplar Grove, Illinois near Belvedere and have missed them greatly. “Can't ingest cow dairy so good snacks & desserts are limited. So glad I found BBP&B for their vegan options, namely February's vegan raspberry pie, March's vegan blueberry mint (I know it sounds a bit odd, but you get this extra hint of freshness from the mint and not a mint taste competing with the fruit. I don't even like mint), and the vegan ginger molasses cookies. You have to pre-order vegan pies >48 hours in advance and it is definitely worth it.“

“I used to live in Roger’s Park 5 years ago and when I tell you I think about this place weekly, I mean it. As the name implies, incredible breads and sauces. The Ukranian Tartine was my absolute favorite. This place is such a gem that I feel like doesn’t get enough recognition.“

“So today I had a friend in from out of town and we topped off our afternoon with a visit to Miski Bakery. I was dying to try the alfajores, and they did not disappoint! The very delicate morsels melted in our mouth, and the creamy luscious dollop of dulce de leche caramel was a perfect pairing. In addition we tried the Milhojas/Napoleons in two flavors the Lucuma pastry creme and also the dulce de leche. A thousand layers is correct, these were amazingly tall, crispy and filled with air, both were delicious but the Lucuma(a Peruvian fruit) pastry creme was the standout. It had such a delightful delicate flavor I had never tasted previously. After speaking with Carmen the owner I asked whether or not they ever carried Turrón de doñja Pepa. She just happened to have some freshly baked sitting on the tray behind the counter, but alas it was still awaiting its filling. This gives me a great reason to return and indulge in that special treat. It is prepared every other week. The service was warm and friendly. This is definitely a hidden gem in the neighborhood you shouldn't miss out on. I will be returning often.“

I'm a retired baker so I can be a tough critic, but I'm telling you the tart especially was very tasty and fresh and the shortbread base was sooo delicious! This is my new go-to bakery when I want to treat myself :) Also! The shop owner was very friendly. Great selection of bakery items, lots of seating, and many fun items in there for sale including cook books, greeting cards, and home goods.“

“I do think these are the best donuts in Chicago area, or that I've ever had, specifically the glaze and the chocolate. I'm from Texas and have high standards for simple yeast donuts. The Chicago area is really lacking in independent donut shops, so when I found these, I was so happy. I found the original D&Ds location a couple of years ago, but was happy when this location opened as it's closer to me. There is a very professional and kind young man that we've seen work the register at the shop a couple of times, and the owner always offers up samples to newbies, so the service here is great. The food and service are truly 5 stars.
The only downfall of this place is, as other reviews have mentioned, there have been multiple times I've tried to come during business hours, and they are unexpectedly closed for the day. And I'm left heartbroken. To avoid this, I would definitely call before heading there. I won't stop going because I truly believe in their product, but I definitely won't head there unless I've confirmed they're open.“
