Not just pierogi ---Gelato, soups, empanadas, tamales, pizza pie (takes 50 mins to make from scratch and worth it!!) Premium Belgium chocolates, shakes, Coffee and most recent.....160 (yes one hundred and sixty) different premium teas from around the world!!.....and more to come! They also own the tea room and book store next to the cafe. Owners are THE BEST! Welcoming, personable and humorous. Dinning outside available and pups are welcome! “The owner is so welcoming, and let’s not even get started on the food! I had the chorizo and veggie skillet, and he was kind enough to let me try a bit of both. The coffee was amazing, too. My friend ordered the poblano crepe (of course I had to taste it), and that was absolutely delicious as well! Like he said, “when you go there, he wants it to be more than just good food …he wants it to be an experience”, and he truly delivers!“

“Excellent food and service. The breakfast sandwich was fantastic. The coffee was quite good. After seeing someone with the miso chocolate chip cookie, i decided to take one to go. It was one of the best chocolate chip cookies I've ever had. I had sticker shock with the prices. After eating the food, I understand how much care went into everything.“

“A local coffee shop owner in Des Moines and a friend recommended Metric to me and my husband. We love it and come whenever we are in Chicago. Today we had the Maize Mocha special (again) and shared a scallion pastry and passion fruit monkey bread. We want to go back to get these items again now. The coffee, pastries and service are all beyond fantastic! There is no public restroom or indoor seating. The outdoor seating is nice when weather allows. I think street parking is usually easier on the weekend as this is an industrial area.“

“There’s ample indoor seating (high tops, low tops, couches), along with an outdoor patio, and even a conference room to work in. The staff is really attentive to detail when it comes to anticipating guests’ needs. They work with a sense of urgency too.“

“It’s cute little coffee shop on a great spot on the corner. It has a small menu of the classic coffee options like latte and cortado, and they have 3 syrup options of lavender, vanilla, or mocha (nope, no caramel!). I forget how small the 8oz is it fits so cutely in my hand but it was a good amount of coffee for my walk home. A bit higher prices but it’s a small business supporting our community! Plenty of seating and space to study, work, or chill!“

“Gretel is a much-hyped spot with an expected long wait due to no reservations. Plan accordingly and be prepared for a 2+ hour wait at peak time, and there are plenty of fun spots within walking distance to get a drink while you wait.

Once we were sat, our server was great! Kind and attentive without being overbearing, I always appreciate when we’re left to linger at the table and have a drink before placing food orders and not feeling rushed.

We split the Gretel burger (when in Rome, right?) and the chopped salad. Both were delicious!

The chopped salad is a very hefty portion, better to split amongst 4 people rather than two since we left half of it behind. The cheese ratio was too heavy on the salad (and I can’t believer I’m saying the words “too much cheese”) while the dressing was too sparse.

The burger lives up to the hype for a reason, and nothing more needs to be said beyond YUM!

Gretel is open late and on our way out at about 11pm, things were winding down. So it’s good to keep in mind for when you’re craving a late night bite beyond the usual fast food spots.

Overall, Gretel maintains the reasons it’s well-regarded and I will return to expand my menu choices!“

“This is my first time here, and I have to say I absolutely love the atmosphere! It is so pretty inside and it's so clean. The staff was super nice.
The only negative thing that I could say was that it did take a long time to get the food even though we were the only ones in there and for what we bought it was really expensive. I thought we were going to get these like full sandwiches and they were these little tiny bitty appetizers.
We also ordered drinks the refreshers and they were so good. I highly suggest to get them with water not with lemonade because they are very sweet. But my first time there and I definitely will be going back. Also you can sign up for points and earn free food.

“this is my favorite place to stop for coffee! what's not to love- this is not one of those sterile impersonal coffee shops that have become so popular. it's cozy, warm, and dripping with personality. always playing records from their vast collection. delicious in house baked goods! excellent coffee! and open into the evening- truly a gem of a place.“

The pie’s flavors were so balanced and precise that it became an argument for the value of small, immediate experiences. “For you folks who like specialty coffee / third wave coffee, Dayglow is a must-visit. They have a wide variety of different offerings on pour over (they call it “hand brew”), and they know how to treat these beans right, and serve coffee properly. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. I would put this up against any café in Chicago for creativity and finesse.“

“My mother and I popped in here before work this morning, and we loved our lattes, pastry, and the service! I love the gothy-ness of the decor, the decent amount of seating, cool staff-made art for sale, and even the mildly lower lighting (in contrast to other coffee shops that feel retina-burningly bright). Very queer and alternative-friendly vibes, too.
