“Hopleaf is a Belgian beer bar and gastropub in Andersonville that has been doing its thing on Clark Street long enough to feel like a permanent piece of the neighborhood's furniture. The back dining room is warm and wood-paneled, the front bar is lively and stocked with a beer list that leans hard into Belgian and European styles, and the whole place operates with the confidence of somewhere that has never felt the need to explain itself.
The CB&J is the sandwich that defines Hopleaf's kitchen: cashew butter, bacon jam, and triple cream brie on toasted sourdough. It sounds like something someone invented on a dare and it's quietly one of the best sandwiches in the city. The Belgian-style mussels are the other anchor, steamed in white wine and shallots with excellent frites alongside, properly done and arriving in a generous pot. The charcuterie and cheese board is the right accompaniment to the beer selection, and the Belgian frites with house-made aioli are the thing most tables order and keep returning to throughout the meal.“

“Came here with my girlfriend for my birthday and I had a very wonderful night. We visited a rooftop restaurant which we left as the food options were very limited. When we saw Matisse Tavern and Grill, we wanted to stop by and visit. We were greeted with very big smiles of happy staff. They took us without reservation and we had been given very good service from Caesar. He gave us very good food recommendations. The bus guy also made sure we had a clean table. Very beautiful and clean restaurant. If you are looking for a chill, date night spot, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND.“

“I truly cant explain it.... I have been to some of the best steak joints in this city but none have been able to compare to the steak frites here. It is consistently top tier, seasoned so well, and cooked to perfection. All the other food is fantastic but that steak slaps every GD time.“

“My wife and I visited Chief O’Neil’s last night for a late drink during a quick trip to Chicago. We were personally greeted and served by proprietor Anluan McKinney who took great care of us and told us about the pub’s history. The food and drinks were wonderful and the pub was clean, comfortable, and authentic. It may be my favorite Irish pub in the US.“

“The sign says established in 1932, and every time I've driven by, I think I need to stop in. I finally did, and am kicking myself for wasted time. There is indoor and outdoor seating. The large bar and restaurant seating is comfortable and spacious. There is a variety of beers on tap, served in well-frosted glasses. We sat at the bar and I had one of the best burgers I've ever had, served with homemade chips. It was so good that I almost returned with another companion the next day!“

“I’m going to be so honest and say I’ve never been there but we can’t wait to. The owners and their family saved Thanksgiving when they donated food, resources and a kitchen to prepare food for 400-500 people (free of charge) at the 28th annual Thanksgiving Dinner at St. Benedict’s when the church’s kitchen became unusable. We met Halsted personally while volunteering and we were just take aback at how generous, kind and lovely these folks were to take on this challenge and on a holiday. I hope our community will continue to remember this and support these fantastic folks for a long, long time.“

“We came here for a work event and this place rocks! We had a private area with basketball hoops, table tennis, and a couple bowling lanes. The service was top notch! I should have asked for the name of our drinks server because he was absolutely great! There were 20 of us and he was very attentive. The food abd drinks were delicious!“

“I'm traveling for work, just landed in Chicago, went to go to the USO, and was told, as a veteran having had deployed to Iraq, that I am not allowed in the USO by some civilian. That's wild. Guy said he needed DoD id, then I pointed to where my member ID was. He said not good enough and told me I had to leave. I've gone to a lot of USO's and never been turned away as a vet.“
