“I’ve been eager to try Mortadeli since it first opened, and after hearing so many rave reviews, I finally had the chance to stop by for lunch yesterday. Let me tell you, everything everyone says about this place is spot on! First off, the food is absolutely delicious. Everything on the menu is so tempting, it was hard to choose, but I went with the meatball sub and pasta salad. As someone whose grandmother made the best meatball sandwiches, my expectations were high – but Mortadeli’s version did not disappoint! It was fantastic. We recently placed a catering order from Lucca for a big company luncheon. They just rolled out their catering menu, so we were one of the firsts to try it. And let me say - the food and service truly exceeded all expectations.

From the very first interaction with Sonia, her team was professional, responsive, and genuinely invested in making our event a success. They were incredibly accommodating with menu options and special requests to make sure our luncheon was a success.

“Our server Esmeralda was so fun and energized! Checked on us frequently! We had excellent fruity (happy hour) drinks and mozzarella cheese sticks for our appetizer! (They were served with a delicious warm tomato sauce! Approved! I'm Italian, so very picky about my pasta and sauces and don't usually order pasta dishes at Italian restaurants, for that reason! We both opted for the white fish entree, because a friend recommended it! Glad we did! (The generous fish portion was served with a delicate white sauce and sautéed spinach & grilled carrot slices!) Don't miss the whitefish!!! (I added a side of garlic & oil linguine; but l I ended up taking home half of my dinner! Excellent portion size! The room had enough light and was spacious; the tables were spread out~ in a good way... it was a Friday night and we did not feel crowded or rushed, at all! Because it was my birthday, we HAD to have dessert~ even though our bellies were full! Lots of dessert choices.... Thankfully, because I am not a tiramisu lover and that's usually what most other Italian restaurants offer! Our sever surprised me with a chocolate Dubai torte which really sounded good. We nibbled on it... It was crunchy and different; didn't love it, so we opted to add coffee and cannolis. Very nice firm shells, freshly made, and not too sweet... however, there were NO chocolate chips inside! I usually prefer mini chocolate chips on the outside ends, too, but definitely mini chocolate chips belong on the INSIDE of a cannoli~ for me! That would be my only complaint! “In 2017, I picked up my older brother at Midway to come home to the funeral of our youngest brother that committed suicide at 23 yers old. We swung over to Vito and Nick's to get a pizza and talk. It was our first time there. We ended up telling the waitress the situation because we had both been crying. Next thing we know, the kitchen had par-baked like 8 large pizzas of all types, and gave us a hand-written note giving us condolences and instructions on how to finish baking the pizzas. And suddenly my carefully crafted sandwich strategy went right out the window. Instead of the steak sandwich, I audibled and went with three of the cheeseburger specials, because at those prices it felt almost irresponsible not to participate in the celebration.

Apparently the entire population of Lyons had the exact same idea.

The place was absolutely slammed. The poor girls behind the counter — Cecilia and Celeste — were running around in circles like contestants in the Italian Beef Olympics. Orders flying, people everywhere, the grill working overtime. They were hustling nonstop and doing their best to keep the whole operation moving.

Because of the anniversary madness, I ended up waiting quite a while for my food. At one point I started wondering if I might still be standing there when they roll out the banner for their 47th anniversary.

But when the burgers finally arrived? Totally worth it. Juicy, cheesy, messy in the way a proper burger should be — the kind where you need a pile of napkins and absolutely no dignity while eating it.

So yes, the wait was real, but between the great food, the anniversary chaos, and Cecilia and Celeste working like absolute champions, it was still a memorable stop.

Pro tip: If you see an anniversary special at Pop’s… bring your patience. The reward at the end is still delicious.“
