“A smaller dimsum place but you'll find all the must-do staples here. No push cart worth of food circling the dining area as it's restricted by the City. But you order using their photo menu. Food comes out really quick and accurate. I like most of their staples but I think Ming's (next to 99Ranch) does a better job with their Ha-Gow.“

“Exciting & very affordable Hong Kong cafe! This tiny spot has amazing food - the French toast is simply to die for! So is the fried chicken sando! There might be a wait, but the staff is super nice. Sitting inside might be a challenge, with the constant line of people buying takeout, but if that doesn’t bother you - it’s worth a shot!“

“Truly a hidden gem at the edge of Chinatown. Incredibly flavorful claypot rice that easily beat many street vendors in Asia. The selection is wide, treatment is simple, homemade. The place is small, so expect to be crowded when busy. Owner/waiter very friendly and welcoming, and attentive. I highly recommend this to locals and visitors alike. I certainly will have many more visits to sample many other interesting items on the menu.“

“This is among the better dim sum places I've been to in the US. The seating reminds me very much of a smaller street-level restaurant you'd find in Hong Kong; it's not the best furnished nor the most comfortable. But the food easily makes up for that. The usual dishes are done quite well, especially the deep fried pork dumpling. I also recommend trying their fried turnip cakes, as it's something I haven't seen in other places and was pretty good. The flavor of their milk tea was on point but I would prefer something slightly stronger. The price was higher than what I'd expect at this kind of place, but it was consistent with other meals I had in Boston at around $25 per person. You'll probably have an easier time with service if you speak Cantonese or come with someone who can. Whatever the case, the food is good and worth a stop.“

“We decided to try this cafe. Very small but the food is delicious. Ordered the rice rolls with liver (for you who like liver, it was yummy!) but they certainly had loads of choices of fillings. The Chow Fun (we had chicken instead of beef) had plenty of bean sprouts as it should be. Yummy homemade wanton soup warmed us as it was a rainy day and our last dish was the pork rib in bean sauce clay pot. Everything looked so tasty we cleaned off the first dishes before I remembered to take photos which are here! Lol“

China Pearl Restaurant Chinese • $$
9 Tyler St, Boston - 5.18 miles

“Just came here yesterday so here's the COVID break-down: - When you walk in, you'll immediately see 4 tables set somewhat apart, but still a bit too close in my opinion. - The right side of the restaurant has an entrance that opens up to an area that is much larger and definitely worth boasting about. Not only were the tables set apart from each other, they had these very impressive tall and transparent separators set up between every table. - As you can expect, there are no carts. You scan a QR code for the menu (or just go to their website for the menu). - All of the staff were wearing a mask. For drinks they only offered three options: Bottled water, hot jasmine tea, or home-made soymilk. The home-made soymilk was delicious. They asked me how much sugar I wanted in it. I usually don't like mine super sweet so that was nice of them to ask. The 5 things my friend and I ordered are listed below from most favorite to least favorite: - #27 Steamed B.B.Q Pork Bun 蒸伹燒包 - The filling had a really authentic cha shao flavor! They also didn't cheap out on the amount of the filling. - #18 Steamed Tofu Roll w/ Minced Pork 蠔皇鮮竹卷 - I really liked the texture of the tofu roll and the filling was full of flavor. - #36 Rice Noodle w/ Chicken & Shiitake Mushrooms 雞絲腸粉 - I didn't think the flavor of the the chicken and shiitake mushrooms was very prominent, but honestly I love rice noodle rolls so I'd definitely get this again (maybe just with shrimp instead). - #24 Steamed Spareribs w/ Black Bean Sauce 䋬汁蒸排骨 - This was a bit of a miss in my opinion. The pork just wasn't as tender as they should have been. - #25 Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf 迷你珍珠雞 - This is a hard pass for the future. In my opinion, sticky rice should taste simple, yet fragrant. Instead, there was a foul flavor with every bite. Not sure what it was. Could even just be my preference in taste doesn't match with the flavor. Meh, who knows. It's really a pity because this was the item I looked forward to the most. It took awhile for us to get our order taken and it took awhile for us to get our check. Regardless, the server was really nice. I could tell she was really busy and the place seemed severely understaffed. However, once we ordered, the food came out immediately - so that's a plus. You can make me wait on many things, but don't make me wait on food, hah!“

“Come here for dim sum and you won't be disappointed. Came as a group of twelve on a Sunday, and as soon as we sat down, we were hounded by waiters with food. It helps to have a Chinese speaker in your group, but it's not impossible without one.For the more popular dishes like Shrimp Chang-Fen, there was a bit of a wait, but not too long. Everything was delicious, but I had been craving the Xi Mi Lu (sago dessert), which really hit the spot.“

“In the vibrant heart of Boston's Chinatown, the Empire Garden Restaurant stands not only as a culinary landmark, but also as a breathtaking visual experience. Located in a building that once housed a theater, the Empire Garden's setting is filled with a majesty that captures the imagination. Upon entering the restaurant, you are immediately transported to another world, thanks to the water colors and impressive architecture that adorn the space, creating an almost unreal atmosphere - in a good way, of course. The Empire Garden's fame is no mystery among the local Chinese community; it is considered a sort of mecca, especially on Sunday mornings, when the atmosphere is charged with an almost spiritual energy. Tradition blends with conviviality, transforming a simple meal into an event not to be missed. As for food, Empire Garden offers a menu that reflects traditional Chinese cuisine with a variety and depth that is difficult to find in smaller Chinese restaurants. However, despite the wide range of unique dishes, the flavors tend to fall into a "too average" range, perhaps a compromise to suit a wider audience. This aspect may not strike the palate of the gourmet looking for exceptional flavors, but it is still adequate for those who want to enjoy a good meal in an extraordinary context.Ultimately, the Empire Garden Restaurant is much more than just a place to eat; it is an experience that involves all the senses. While the dishes may not be the most extraordinary you have ever tasted, the overall experience, amplified by the unique setting and rich history of the venue, makes a visit to this restaurant an unforgettable moment. If you find yourself in Boston and are looking for an experience that goes beyond the simple act of eating, the Empire Garden is the place where the eyes, as much as the palate, will have something to feast on.Kid-friendliness: Ample space for children, children with parents, groups of teenagers or entire complete classes.“

“I’m not sure what to feel about this restaurant to be honest. When entering the restaurant the decor was good and the food smelt good. I asked for a Chinese menu and they didn’t have one, and also didn’t ask if I wanted chopsticks - started to get suss. Then we ordered and they served bread - even more suss. However, the food came and it was actually decent. Extremely large portions too! Overall gave it a 4/5 because of this. Won’t come back personally just to eat this but might come (very low probability) if I was in the area.“
