Omakase Offering

“I could avoid writing this review to gate-keep this gem, but Chef Monaco deserves the praise for what he has created. Located in Lexington, Akame Nigiri and Sake is a humble six-seater with only two time slots per night (Thurs-Sat). For $180, you can get a 15-course omakase curated with delicacies sourced directly from Japan's Toyosu Fish Market. You can also add a sake pairing for an additional $70. One of the reasons Chef Monaco opened in Lexington is because it is easier and cheaper to get a liquor license, so I feel like the pairing would be worth it, but I had to pass this time since I was driving. The interior is inline with the untraditional angle that Akame goes for: the simple aesthetic and the seating around the bar where you can watch Chef Monaco work his magic are reminiscent of places in Japan, but the furniture, decor, and music are not. However, I personally don't care for the ambiance so long as it does not distract from the experience because the food is what I will remember at the end of the day. Plus, those seats were so comfy even if I'll never see them in a true Japanese restaurant, so I'm not mad.I enjoyed everything that I got to taste, but the standouts for me were:- Foie Gras-Spiced Rice Crispy Ginger Yuzu Macadamia Dark Chocolate: This was my absolute favorite because of the rice crispy, which is funny because that's not even fish. But man, that rice crispy was to die for. If Chef Monaco decides to convert Akame into a store selling only these rice crispy treats, I'd be his #1 customer. The chocolate was also very good.- Uni Sea Urchin-Rice Cracker Sichuan Pepper Corn Caviar: I was surprised by how much uni and caviar we were given. The uni was refreshingly chilled and so smooth and creamy.- Ibodai Butterfish-Ginger Vinegar Apple Honey Mustard: The fish was firmer, but I really liked the sweetness of the honey mustard.- Tairagi Pen Shell-Curry Tofu Pumpkin Seeds: Curry is something that I've never had with nigiri before, but the spices in the curry worked well.- A5 Wagyu-Seared Yuzu Kosho Egg Yolk Custard Nutritional Yeast Truffle: Fatty. Melted in your mouth. Delicious truffle. The nutritional yeast was interesting (in a good way).Honorable mentions:- Yuki Masu Snow Trout-Gooseberry Kiwi Aonori: The aonori added great depth as a garnish, and I liked its flaky form.- Hotate Sea Scallop-Gochujang Beet Salad Crispy Chickpea: The horse saddle style cut was so cute. The hotate was also so soft.- Hotaru Ika Firefly Squid-Chorizo Salad Sesame Seeds: The squid was also very cute... cute enough to eat. Juicy and lemony. This was the first time I've ever had Japanese without salmon or tuna, which I believe is part of what makes this place untraditional. But I didn't find myself missing them because each fish packed a unique flavor profile and texture. I also loved that there was a nutty crunch with most of the courses. The entire experience took about 1.5 hours. The pacing between courses was consistent. The meal was mostly quiet, but Chef Monaco was very friendly when we did talk. Shout out to the chef's brother who attentively refilled my water and ginger throughout the night.Overall, it was a delightful dinner, and I would be interested in coming back once the menu changes (but please keep the rice crispy treats... they have a chokehold on me).“

“Came here last month and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I appreciated how the front of house told us (before seating us) that if we order sushi, it'd take about an hour to prepare the food because they were so busy. Obviously, because it was a Saturday night.Agedashi tofu - As a tofu lover who often orders this dish, I thought it was super yummy and have great flavor & texture. There were four large cubes and came with a lot of garnishes.Nagaimo Teppan - My friends and I were curious about this dish, but it ended up being very different from what we expected. The texture was crumbly and the flavor was not as good as we anticipated. It was an interesting experience but not worth the price for us.Omusoba - SO GOOD. I wish we ordered less so that I had space to eat more of this dish. The flavors were amazing, especially with the seaweed and mayo on top. I loved that there were noodles inside, since I'm an avid noodle enjoyer.Niku Udon - I was craving something soupy, and this dish was exactly what I was looking for. The noodles weren't the typical thick udon noodles, but instead were more flat. The beef was cooked very well and there was just the right amount of it. The flavor was great and the portion was perfect. LOVED this one!Crab Croquette - My first time having this dish and it was above my expectations. It and the same yummy sauce that was on the omusoba and came with a little bit of salad. The croquettes themselves were cooked very well, but were very filling. Would definitely recommend if you like fried food!In terms of service and layout, the place was pretty full when I went, so I had to sit on a long table in the middle of the room, where servers were constantly going back and forth behind me (I didn't mind it). The servers themselves are kind and welcome to the guests, and the food came out pretty quickly. There is a bar as well as an open kitchen were I could see the sushi chef work his craft. There was overall just a great sense of community inside. Unfortunately, because of its location, the restaurant does not have their own bathroom. Instead, we had to leave the restaurant and go around the corner of the "mall" to use the public bathroom. It was fine.In conclusion, I highly recommend going, especially when they aren't busy“

“Blue Ribbon Sushi has had a lot of hype since it opened. Naturally, it was on my bucket list, yet something always came up. But after so long, I finally got a chance to try it. And I was really impressed with the food, decor, and service. The Crispy Rice is delicious, and I love sushi places that serve you on a board. Great attention to detail. I did go during lunch, which is slower, so that gave me more personal time. Only thing is that I would knock it for is that this place is super expensive. Their sushi deluxe is almost $50, twice the price of most regular spots (they give you a credit for the roll you get with the pieces). Even the crispy rice is almost $30 for an app. But it is in a great location, and the space is beautiful—I feel it's worth it every once in awhile to splurge or for a date. I hear dinner is always busy. Also, super clean bathrooms. So I'll be back. Always good to have a consistent place“

“Soba has been on my food bucket list and I think this spot gave a very authentic soba experience. The food was all very refreshing and pleasant to eat, which is probably the main draw of soba. The mild flavors mean you can effortlessly finish the large portion of noodles and tempura in the meal set without the typical fatigue you get from a large bowl of noodles and plate of fried foods. All the fried foods we got were cooked to crispy perfection and were definitely my favorite bites. Ultimately though I just think I’m not the biggest fan of soba. I don’t imagine myself craving soba but I would be open to trying different styles of it if given the chance. Thank you to Sugidama for a great meal regardless.“

“Dined here on New Year's Eve, so we decided to take the night off from taking glamour shots. Jindu's piece de resistance is their sushi, given the outstanding reviews, amount of tables ordering and exquisite presentation. We ordered drinks, which were excellent, and a few appetizers. The bartender forgot to add a key ingredient to one of our drinks, but quickly rectified. If our review was solely based on the food, it would be 3 stars, but the warm greeting, excellent customer service & ambiance were deserving of an extra one. The hot & sour soup was served cold. Upon request it was returned piping hot. Good flavor, but glutinous texture. The mixed green salad was fresh, but lacked dressing. Some of the flavorful, boneless pork ribs were tender, albeit served cold w/the majority very fatty. Their crab rangoon were good, just not our type of batter. The pan fried gyoza were excellent. “I think this was a solid 4/5 stars experience. It was better than just okay, but not like "wow, I'm in love." Admittedly, I've only started to appreciate sushi in the past couple of years, but I have a clue.I got the salmon roll and the spicy tuna roll, and I thought they were good but not great. The salmon had a nice texture but a bit of a fishy taste. The spicy tuna was better -- not very spicy though, which is fine for my Midwest palate. I'm glad I got two rolls, because the rolls were pretty small.I thought this was good, but slightly less tasty than the pre-packed sushi rolls I get at the supermarket sushi counter -- and I'm not talking about Whole Foods here -- I'm talking about Meijer, our supermarket chain in Michigan. The sushi rolls we make at home are way better. I went there with a co-worker from California, and she thought it was pretty good, if that helps.Still...good, not great. Four stars.“

“This place was a hidden gem; even their entrance felt hidden. We came here after dinner to drink; we ordered three rounds. We tried Rio to Tokyo, San Juan to Hanoi, Lima to Dubai, Pennies del cielo, and Guavaleada. It was interesting that they mixed flavors from the departure city to the final destination into a drink. All drinks are presented beautifully, and you really can taste the alcohol. Since we both can't drink without snacks, even though we had dinner less than half an hour ago, we ordered the wagyu temaki, snow crab temaki, negi toro temaki, and yuzu rotate temaki. The quality of the ingredients was fresh, and there was not much rice. The menu is limited; don't come here if you expect a full meal unless you want to eat a poke bowl and/or are willing to pay a lot more just for small bites. I am willing to return if I am around the area for drinks and small bites.“

“A fabulously funky spot for sushi, Thai, and other Asian cuisine. Super friendly and accommodating staff, and the food was amazingly quick, despite how crazy busy it was on a Friday night. After dinner, we wandered over to the bar and enjoyed some fantastic live jazz.. Glad we chose this place for date night. We will definitely be back!“

“Our first time to this location. Overall we had an excellent experience. My hat's off to Mike. We had Shay for our server. She was exceptional in every way. She's very pleasant and welcoming. We were greeted by Cheryl the GM. She's definitely great at her job, paying attention to every detail of her surroundings. And much to our surprise she lives in our town. Such a small world. Well needless to say we enjoyed our unexpected stop on our way from Logan. Keep up the great work and food. From your patrons from New Hampshire.“

“Dined here on a Sunday night around 7pm. Two other families wrapped up before our food came and nobody else entered the restaurant after that, so we were the only ones sitting there for the majority of the time. The place has a cozy atmosphere with Japanese language books in the entrance and lots of traditional paintings, although admittedly it felt pretty dead for a weekend night (this seemed to be an issue with the entire block, which are the furthest businesses west before the I-90 entrance/exit ramps). There were dirty dishes and receipts on the tables when we entered, but the restaurant was highly understaffed (only one guy working there) so this can be excused. The food took a while because of this but it was excellent, with medium-large portions and pricing in line with other Japanese restaurants in the area. Would definitely come back on a Fri/Sat night, and wish there were more employees!Parking: There are a few spots directly in front of the restaurant, although they are shared with the other businesses on the same block. If those spots are occupied (and this hasn't been an issue so far), there is plenty of parking nearby.“

“Gen sushi is our go-to neighborhood sushi joint. They provide high quality sushi with notably larger pieces of fish than competing restaurants in the area. We particularly enjoy the way they prepare nigiri! They have friendly and welcoming staff and we appreciate their early opening time of 4 PM.“

“Enjoyed the 갈비 비빔밥 (Galbi Bibimbap) which is essentially marinated beef short rib in a mixture of white rice and fresh vegetables and a fried egg. It was delicious and an enjoyable experience watching the food cook in the hot bowl right in front of me. The rice at the bottom crisped up and gave the dish that extra crunch I was not expecting. It was a pleasant surprise and I'd come again.“

“Great new restaurant - awesome for takeout or to eat in, it is a more upscale atmosphere with a good selection of beer, wine & sake. My husband loves sushi and I love Thai and this is the only place in town we’ve found that does both, and does it very well! Highly recommend.“

“The Great Wok is Best in Wellesley without a doubt. They’re a star in the overall area for anything Chinese/Japanese inspired & their bar is top notch. Just fantastic. This restaurant has been under new ownership for about 1 year. Since converting to “The Great Wok” from their former name “The Wok”, offerings of food, drinks, and ambiance have significantly increased. Chef Bruce is a legend in the industry with 25 years of experience. “Great” is an excellent addition to the name and rightfully deserved. In case you did not know, they now offer a solid sushi menu. Like many other customers at The Great Wok, you are sure to come back often. I will post some photos of dishes I have enjoyed and I’m always open to make a recommendation. Hats off to this location.“
