“A friend and I were just walking around DC and stumbled upon this restaurant. The decor was the first thing that got us. Once we got inside the warm welcome and smiles caused us to stay. We were given complimentary butternut squash soup, it was delicious! I ordered the Seven Reasons ceviche and I loved it! The purple sweet potato and crunchy pops of quinoa really stood out. Also, I got the Tropical Aperol Spritz cocktail, it was refreshing. The atmosphere was welcoming and friendly staff was an added bonus. “I had a late lunch and ordered the churrasco (skirt steak.) What I got was a riot of delicious flavors. The steak was topped with sautéed onions and parsley with a grilled Serrano. The last is not for the faint of heart. The sides included rice, pico de gallo and a South American version of mixed vegetables with a Peruvian green sauce in the middle. Freshly fried tortillas with cilantro chutney came separately. Did I say that it was all flavorful? The only thing I didn't like was the saltiness of the rice. While rice needs salt, it should never be noticeable especially to the extent of competing for dominance. This is why I had to dock a star. I should mention that my meal was gluten-free.“

I got the brussel sprouts and fries. The brussel sprouts are coated with a carmelized type of ingredient that packs a big much. The only negative about them is that they are usually pretty big which makes it hard to eat them whole like normal sized ones, so keep a knife handy to cut them smaller. The fries were also very good. I must say the sauces are probably the best I've had out of all similar chicken spots, especially the green sauce!! Oh my, my, my!!! I just had them for lunch today and I'm really contemplating on ordering them for dinner - they are just that good!“

The masitas de puerco was absolutely my favorite; the pork was so tender and the sauce was crazy savory. Truly I can't remember the last time I had something so good. If you are a fan of onions or pork I cannot recommend it enough.The staff was polite, attentive, and accommodating.I will say it is a bit small/there's not a lot of seating. We came after peak dinner hours (8pm) when it wasn't full, but if all the tables were full I could see it being a bit crowded and chaotic. “El Cielo made our Valentine’s celebration a memorable experience! I wanted to surprise my husband this year and the CCO, Pedro, was very helpful when it came to helping me with last minute reservations. The entire staff was friendly, eloquent, and very professional. My husband and I are both Spanish speakers (it is our mother tongue) and we loved interacting with the staff in Spanish (this made it so much more special to us). Now, as for the food. Let me just start by saying that when I told my husband what our dining experience would be like, he was very skeptical. He is an amateur fighter, and when he is not doing “fighting camps” he LOVES to eat. When we arrived he was already making plans to go eat arepas after, to finish filling his tummy. Needles to say, arepas did not happen after, as he was extremely full from all the courses. Each meal was beautifully presented, and tasted just as divine! We loved knowing what each meal represented and they are all a beautiful homage to Colombia. The atmosphere in El Cielo, is very cozy. The aesthetics of the restaurant itself makes you feel like you are eating at a friends house. From the decorations to the music. “I am so happy to have a restaurant of this caliber in Friendship Heights. It's the sort of dining experience I expect to have downtown but I'm thrilled to have it just around the corner from my home. We came in without reservations on a Saturday night and had no problem getting a table (again, a place like this would be packed if it were downtown or somewhere like U Street). The food, cocktails, and service were great. Jose took good care of us. They are not kidding when they say the XL plates are meant to be shared--we split the short rib sandwich and it was massive. We ordered a few appetizers and the scallops with the toasted bread was our favorite (maybe ask for more bread so you can fully soak up that excellent parmesan sauce!). And leave room for dessert! We had the ube ice cream and it was fantastic.“

The rice and beans were really good and tasty. I enjoyed my beef fajitas, but the ribs were a little too saucy and more American bbq tasting than Latino style. We opted for lomo saltado and escabeche de patitas (pickled pig's feet). The lomo was tender and delicious, accompanied by vegetables, fried potatoes and rice. The escabeche was perfectly cooked, not too vinegary. Both portions were very generous. Finished with tres leches and lucuma ice cream. The service was quick and attentive without being annoying. “Been here dozens of times over the years. And the rumors are true. Easily the best pollo a la brasa place in the area. Chicken and sauces are reliably excellent and very reasonably priced. Feeding a family of four with room to spare for $22 is something you can't even do at McDonalds these days. Sides are limited in variety, but they're ok. Only gripe is the fried yuca is often chewy, hard, and/or dry. But skip that menu item, and you'll be fine.“

There's also the pabellon bowl, which you can choose between beef, chicken, pork, and veggie. I love how, with the beef pabellon bowl, the beef is cooked with a sort of stew flavor, while the beans don't have too much liquid, as it can be sometimes with Chipotle. There's also a good amount of basmati rice, which could use a bit more flavoring in my opinion, but the flavor of the plantain complements the beef.Overall, I highly recommend the pabellon bowls and arepas. Arepas are quite filling, so I would say that they are worth the price you receive. It wasn’t soggy, which a lot of quesadillas have problems with, and paired well with the tomatoes, jalapeños and guacamole that came on the side. 10/10The chips and salsa that came on the house were standard. The chips could use seasoning, and the salsa was the watery type, which isn’t my favorite. 5/10The strawberry daiquiri was delicious- light, flavorful and fresh. 10/10The lemonade (with lime added) receives the same regards. The only reason I gave a 3 star for the service is because the menu has a halal sign on it but when I asked the staff if all the meat provided is halal or just the chicken, the were clueless they didn’t even know what the meaning of the word halal and they didn’t even notice it on the menu on display. I had to show it to them. It was embarrassing. Other customers were looking perplexed. The place is amazing and so is the food but the staff need to be educated so they are aware about other religion and what halal is. :)“
