Opened in October 1960 by Connie and Helen Valanos, The Monocle has seen more political deals sealed over its crab cakes than perhaps in the chambers of Congress themselves. As the Washingtonian noted, “The Monocle is a better restaurant than it’s given credit for,” serving dishes like “pan-fried Chesapeake Bay oysters baked in a light curry sauce” that feel like culinary diplomacy at its finest. “This was my and my fiancé's first time dining at this restaurant a few nights ago. We made a table reservation via OpenTable for 7:00pm, arrived at 6:50pm, and we were seated right away. From previous reviews I heard I was a good idea to make reservations, so that seems to be accurate from our experience because it was definitely a full house. The food is a bit pricey, but definitely worth it because it was delicious. I enjoyed my appetizer of Fiesta Egg rolls which were definitely cheesy, hot, and full of shredded chicken and lots of flavor. For entrees I got the Prime Rib (medium) which was cooked perfectly with some redskin mashed potatoes 😋 my fiancé got the Eastern Shore style crab cakes which were broiled and very tasty; came with coleslaw and show string french fries. My fiancé enjoyed all of his meal, with the exception of the coleslaw which he did not partake in due to health reasons. I also tried to Elite Margarita which was pretty good but a tad strong on the tequila for my liking, but the lime slice helped to take down some of the bitter alcohol taste for me 🙂👍🏾 The atmosphere of the restaurant is very relaxing, classy, and dimly lit which we loved because it had a romantic vibe to it. Our server, Olivia, was very friendly and welcoming and was on point making sure everything was to our liking. We will definitely be returning again to this location.“

“We used Sonoma's private mezzanine floor for an event for 30 people, and it was a great success. Hilary from the events team was very helpful in figuring out a setup / configuration that would work well for our team, and the menu prepared was exceptional with regards to taste, quality, and variety.

A huge factor for also choosing Sonoma is the proximity to Capitol Hill and many administrative buildings within DC. This was an easy walk for a members, and although it's right off a main street and busy thoroughfare, it was still quiet in the restaurant.

“I've been here once before and I enjoy it very much. I got a steak breakgast burrito for myself and my mom a tuna salad sandwich. The burrito was delicious and my mom really enjoyed her sandwich. The only thing I added to my burrito wss some hot sauce -- and then it wss perfect. I love this place and I love the service. Side note: the Orion sky signage always makes me a bit nostalgic for Okinawa.“
