“Tried this cornbread in Newark. I must say the food was fresh and very tasty. The workers were friendly and they all did a great job. After visiting the Maplewood store I was turned off because the service and food in Maplewood was horrible. But with a lot of convenseing from my daughter in love. I tried the one in Newark and am very please with portion size and freshness. I will return when I back down in Newark again.“
“Some of the best if not the best food I've had in jersey, outside of other cuisines I regularly eat. Great place to treat yourself or someone after a hard time.Food portions were heavy, 3 people split 2 entrees and 2 starters and had food to take home. Definitely going back for more of that cornbread dressing stuffing & cheesy grits“
“My visit to Madre & Son Soulfood Cafe was a great experience. The waitress was pleasant and the food was very delicious! I had the oxtail, potato salad, yams, and fried chicken, which was well seasoned. Definitely coming back and do recommend their food and catering services.“
“The place is like a very large house. Funky decorations make for a pleasant atmosphere. We were promptly greeted as we entered and seated at a comfortable table for our party of 3. We ordered blue crab beignets for the table. These delicious little bites were a nice starter. A nice drink menu offered a bunch of different old fashioneds. We ordered brisket, fried chicken and fried catfish. All were exceptional as was the efficient, cheerful service. I don't rate 5 stars lightly, this place deserves it!“
“Great fried chicken. Not greasy, with a nice crunchy batter that was not too thick. Oil used was fresh and chicken seemed also fresh and was good quality. I didn’t give 5 stars only because I would have liked more seasonings but this restaurant will still be my go to when I’m looking for fried chicken. Service was also fast.“
“The experience was outstanding! The waiter Ramell was amazing! He was super attentive and polite, also recommended things to our tasting. Truly a great experience! We also got to talk to the manager, Aisha, who welcomed us at our table to make sure everything was well. Overall this place is a 100000000/10. Definitely come-you won’t be disappointed from the ambience, music, staff, and the FOOD IS OUT OF THIS WORLD!We ordered the veggie plate with (rice and peas, yams, and cabbage, along with jerk lamb chops, jerk chicken Rasta pasta, oxtails, collard greens(with turkey), jerk chicken egg rolls, buffalo chicken egg rolls, jerk chicken quesadilla, and honey butter cornbread skillet! “Had the catfish poboy at uptown night Market! They told me 15 minutes was done in 15 minutes. It was a large fried catfish filet and it was perfectly crispy. I think the tartar sauce may have needed a little more salt but overall great experience. Reminded me of Louisiana“
“The after church crowd was here on Sunday and I completely understand why. The food was every thing it needed to be & then some. I ordered the shrimp & grits with a side of eggs. They serve breakfast all day and have a vegan menu. The restaurant is connected to an apartment building so be careful not to pass when looking for it. It has a black & white striped triangular umbrella hovering over it. The staff were kind and the atmosphere was extremely down to earth, but not ghetto. This is a great mom & pop shop that you should fed check out. Be sure to try a flavored lemonade or iced tea. They are tall and one was more than enough. I didn't notice any ASL speaking staff, it wasn't needed, but there is space for wheelchairs. There is also street parking so be mindful. Only downside, our table wasn't exactly clean when sat down, but it was obvious they were busy. Overall, this is a great place for brunch or Sunday takeout dinner.“
“Good place for non vegetarian south India food. Had biriyani from there multiple times. Good place for non veg thali also. Their specials like jack fruit biriyani was awesome.This is not a fine dining or a romantic dinner place. But a family can visit for a nice meals. The dishes are not pricey. Highly recommend.“
“My family loves this place. No frills and outdated decor and music but it adds to the charm and is cozy. Soups are always delicious. We especially love their German bean soup that they had during Oktoberfest. Chef, please have it more often! Sliced filet mignon with onions and mushrooms is my favorite entree. Finished with a slice of their homemade cheesecake. Place is affordable and we leave feeling happy.“
