“My wife and I generally eat for five people, we ordered 4 small plates and 2 mains, still looking into dessert. Each dish had its own layer of perfection with unique flavors and exquisite presentation. I’d say a restaurant on its way to becoming Michelin…..bravo! Oh and the ole school hip hop added to the vibe. Enjoyed this dinner date immensely!👏👏👏👏😍😍😍😎😎😎“

“Very nice atmosphere and good food.
Style full African designed interior, maybe the light was a little too bright but the rest was absolutely perfect.
The server was knowledgeable, super friendly and explained everything we wanted to know.
The presentation of the dishes was everything! Original and style full. Like a gift that was presented to you.
I had the lamb with asperges as a side my friend the chicken with the joloff rice. We had bites of each other and we both loved both dishes. A number of times she said those asperges are so good! And boy did I enjoy the Joloff rice!
The restaurant is also kid friendly. There was a nice family next to us with a seat for the little one and we enjoyed chatting with them for a bit.
We had a great time. You could see and feel in everything that the owner, has a passion for what he does and takes his craft very serious. A place I totally recommend.“

“I love this place! It is such a gem for the area! Great energy, awesome event options including comedy, music, special events! I recently went to an incredible special tasting menu that had northern Nigerian specialities that was mind blowing! Monday night comedy is always fun with great drinks from a great bar staff and energy. Alke is also open for coffee which is always nice especially to grab on a walk to the park with the pup or to sit outside when weather allows“

“Yum, I loved the joloff rice, moi moi and kale. Honey beans dont contain honey, and they make burgers out of these nigerian beans. At first glance it might look like there's a bunch of burgers with honey. My friends loved the burgers Very limited seating and small space Updated from previous review on 2025-05-26“

“As someone who has grown up eating Nigerian food I was intrigued to see what DoC would offer and was pleasantly surprised.
It was no frills, high quality Nigerian food that was authentic with no attempts to water it down for a wider audience.
In the night we had Pepper Soup, Warra and Abula.
Great mingling with other guests on the table.
Only downside it that they don’t give you much of a heads up about the BYOB policy’s“

“Food is always great. I lovvvee the snail. Please please cook the meet a little longer. My teeth is fighting for their life trying to bite through them. They are too tough. Otherwise, Egusi and Efo are delicious. The beans are so good! Anytime I’m in the city I always stop by! 🥰“

“Not the best place to dine in, especially during the summer when it’s hot out, but really great choice for food that’s filled with tons of flavor and spices; I felt like I was transported out of the country with how authentic it tasted. Highly recommend for those who love eating from hole in the wall restaurants!“

“Alright so so listen. African restaurants are a lil different from American restaurants. Youre not coming here for the service, youre coming here for the food. The service isn't bad at all, but its just culturally different. Now THE FOOD ... BAYBEH! YOU WONT FIND ANYWHERE BETTER SO DONT EVEN LOOK. I dont know what the family recipe is but jesus im... there are few thanks that remain the same in NYC and im so grateful this food has. I have been coming here since I was a kid and I'm in my late 30s now. They used to be on 59. Then 116. Now their new location. I am just so glad that the recipes are still the same. So glad for that.“

“Food was nice, well seasoned and tasty. The service was a bit slow when the restaurant wasn't at full capacity. Also, it was cold in there as air from outside came in as people go through the doors. The restaurant is not energy efficient.
I'll definitely be back for the food“

“Best African food around! If you know how to order, you’re in for a true gift! I usually get the poisson braise (grilled fish) with attieke (“acheke” or ground cassava) and aloko (sweet plantains). Enjoy!“

“Surprised it was nearly empty for Saturday lunch. It should have been a lot more people!
The gumbo was warming and like a warm hug, and the fufu was amazing as well, although i had trouble handling it because of how hot it was.
Truly a hidden gem. I would love to come back and try other things.“
“Great Senegalese/West African food with huge portions at decent prices. We were shocked at the amount of food we got for $20 (enough for at least 2 meals). While the ambience of the shop might not be great or the staff super friendly, the food and price is what makes it great and why I would recommend it.
The options are usually a protein and a carb and the protein portion is big, fowl would be an entire fowl, fish would be an entire fish etc. The carb options were vermicelli, couscous, rice, fries etc. They also have West African drinks.
We loved the fowl and fried fish and the vermicelli side the most.“
“It's a simple no frills restaurant, but the food was so good. Sure the servers aren't actors working a day job. But they were genuine to me and most importantly the food was delicious and I left wanting to return. Generous portions at a very reasonable price!“

“We were here for vacation. My husband is from the DRC. for those who don’t know, that’s the Democratic Republic of Congo. I am American, but I love their food. We make it all the time we wanted to go somewhere that felt like home and this was right on the dot. The food was so soft and so yummy perfectly spice you must come try. They have wonderful service they make you feel welcomed and at home and the owner blessing is her name she’s phenomenal. Please come and enjoy the African food. The African experience.“

“Authentic West African food geared towards the local West Africans. With that said the decour is very bare and the seating is community styled. If you want a trip to West Africa but can't afford a ticket, this is your place. If you can only eat at Western styled restaurants it's not for you. The foufou is amazing. The lamb dibi is succulent. I love it.“
“One of the few places in NYC where you can find food from Guinea! Definitely worth traveling up to the Bronx to eat off jalloh’s massive buffet, where breadth is matched by depth in flavor. The food remains high quality (fresh, not too greasy or salty), even at 11:30pm when I visitedI particularly loved the Dhapa et Folêrê , a Guinean grits dish, where the corn is fresh ,fragrant, and unbelievably variegated in texture. You can also choose to eat the folêrê with dishes like bourakhé (cassava leaves stewed in palm oil and smoked fish), a winning combo that delicately juxtaposes the stew's smoke and heat with the mellow and earthy flavors of the grits. Or if you’re craving the smooth and silky texture of okra, there’s maffi gumbo that pairs very well with grits. The options here are endless..“

“Another African restaurant that would blow your mind with their delicious recipe. I was really hungry as I drove past Flatbush. I just had to google any African restaurant near me, that was how I drove to this place. It looked really small, more like it was built for takeout only. But as soon as my jollof rice came with vegetables and goat meat! Hands up 🙌🏽 I gave the 10 stars ⭐️“

“A great lineup of African cuisine options. As a picky eater, I usually stick to what I know but this time I wanted to try something different and I was pleased. The white rice with goat meat stew was good; I’m not a fan of spicy food so the savory flavors were put together very well. The plantain that I had added to the dish, gave it exactly what it needed. This is not my first time at the location so I can identify that the service could be better and more hospitable. I’m a person that likes to ask questions before purchasing or before inputting food into my body so I appreciate when people take the time to be attentive. Besides that, I will likely be trying their food again as they have a wide selection ranging from meats and stews to different starches.“

“As a first-gen Ghanaian American, I've always craved the authentic flavors of my parents' homeland. Papaye African Restaurant in the Bronx is a culinary haven that transports me straight to Ghana! The aromas, the spices, the tender meat... every bite is a taste of nostalgia and cultural pride.
I appreciate the simplicity of the menu, which allows the chefs to focus on perfecting the traditional dishes that have been passed down through generations. The jollof rice is a staple, and Papaye's version is a masterclass in flavor and technique.
As a first-gen, it's beautiful to see my culture celebrated and shared with the community. Papaye African Restaurant is more than just a meal - it's a connection to my heritage, a celebration of our traditions, and a reminder of the rich cultural legacy that shapes my identity.

“I got the okra+spinach w/ spicy goat. It was out of this world. The owner gave me a call a few minutes after I made the order to let me know they were out of fufu (pounded yams) and replaced it with yellow rice. I enjoyed the goat — it has a kick but not overwhelmingly spicy. The choice I made was excellent. I am most definitely ordering again and hope I can try the fufu next time.“
