“My wife and I generally eat for five people, we ordered 4 small plates and 2 mains, still looking into dessert. Each dish had its own layer of perfection with unique flavors and exquisite presentation. I’d say a restaurant on its way to becoming Michelin…..bravo! Oh and the ole school hip hop added to the vibe. Enjoyed this dinner date immensely!👏👏👏👏😍😍😍😎😎😎“

“Chef D and her team catered my wedding and I cannot thank them enough for the outstanding experience! We are West African (notoriously not easy to impress when it comes to food) and I had guests jumping for seconds and still singing praises one week later. Leading up to the wedding, Chef D was incredibly responsive, professional and flexible. She came to the venue herself with her team to help set up the buffet and make sure everything was properly and beautifully presented. I cannot thank her and the entire Berber Street Food team for the best evening! Looking forward to working with you all again for my next event!“

“Stop the search. Seriously. The Peanut Stew with Banana Fufu here is non-negotiable, a perfect 10 out of 10. I enjoyed this meal a great deal and I'm already craving my next visit. This is the comfort food you didn't know you needed.
My total came to about $24. I got there about 10 minutes after they opened, and my order was ready in a quick 15 minutes. Efficient!
The staff was really nice and helpful; they didn't just take my order, they were genuinely excited about the menu and suggested a few other things I absolutely must try next.
If you like good food and excellent service, you need to try this place. Don't walk, run!“

“Alright so so listen. African restaurants are a lil different from American restaurants. Youre not coming here for the service, youre coming here for the food. The service isn't bad at all, but its just culturally different. Now THE FOOD ... BAYBEH! YOU WONT FIND ANYWHERE BETTER SO DONT EVEN LOOK. I dont know what the family recipe is but jesus im... there are few thanks that remain the same in NYC and im so grateful this food has. I have been coming here since I was a kid and I'm in my late 30s now. They used to be on 59. Then 116. Now their new location. I am just so glad that the recipes are still the same. So glad for that.“

“Not the best place to dine in, especially during the summer when it’s hot out, but really great choice for food that’s filled with tons of flavor and spices; I felt like I was transported out of the country with how authentic it tasted. Highly recommend for those who love eating from hole in the wall restaurants!“

“Best African food around! If you know how to order, you’re in for a true gift! I usually get the poisson braise (grilled fish) with attieke (“acheke” or ground cassava) and aloko (sweet plantains). Enjoy!“

“Authentic West African food geared towards the local West Africans. With that said the decour is very bare and the seating is community styled. If you want a trip to West Africa but can't afford a ticket, this is your place. If you can only eat at Western styled restaurants it's not for you. The foufou is amazing. The lamb dibi is succulent. I love it.“

“Walking into Yop City felt so warm and welcoming. We even got a chance to speak with the owner, who was super kind and passionate about sharing Ivorian food and culture. The food was incredible — the attiéké with fish was perfectly seasoned, and the alloco was fried just right, crispy and sweet. Portions are generous, and you can really taste the authenticity in every bite. This spot definitely makes you feel at home, and I’ll be coming back again and again.“

“Food is always great. I lovvvee the snail. Please please cook the meet a little longer. My teeth is fighting for their life trying to bite through them. They are too tough. Otherwise, Egusi and Efo are delicious. The beans are so good! Anytime I’m in the city I always stop by! 🥰“

“It's a simple no frills restaurant, but the food was so good. Sure the servers aren't actors working a day job. But they were genuine to me and most importantly the food was delicious and I left wanting to return. Generous portions at a very reasonable price!“

Great service here too, servers are attentive and kind. Drinks were a hit, with options for everyone from cocktails to wine/beer. Very good, will be back again and again.“

“We stumbled on this place your local home-cooked. The food is great. They just need to get more organized. We came there with friends raving about the food place our orders and they came back stating they ran out. We had to wait. It was late on a Saturday. If you’re going there go early before they run out of food.“

“This place was amazing. The jilof was my favorite. The service was perfect and the little kid named Eddy was really cute. The meat here couldn’t have been better. I’m really happy about this place and can’t wait to come back and get some more food.“
“One of the few places in NYC where you can find food from Guinea! Definitely worth traveling up to the Bronx to eat off jalloh’s massive buffet, where breadth is matched by depth in flavor. The food remains high quality (fresh, not too greasy or salty), even at 11:30pm when I visitedI particularly loved the Dhapa et Folêrê , a Guinean grits dish, where the corn is fresh ,fragrant, and unbelievably variegated in texture. You can also choose to eat the folêrê with dishes like bourakhé (cassava leaves stewed in palm oil and smoked fish), a winning combo that delicately juxtaposes the stew's smoke and heat with the mellow and earthy flavors of the grits. Or if you’re craving the smooth and silky texture of okra, there’s maffi gumbo that pairs very well with grits. The options here are endless..“

“Another African restaurant that would blow your mind with their delicious recipe. I was really hungry as I drove past Flatbush. I just had to google any African restaurant near me, that was how I drove to this place. It looked really small, more like it was built for takeout only. But as soon as my jollof rice came with vegetables and goat meat! Hands up 🙌🏽 I gave the 10 stars ⭐️“

“Very nice experience. Small outlet but they can be forgiven, this is New York, everything is expensive. Meat was well cooked, fried and very tasty. Fish was the best I’ve had in a while and their gbegiri and ewedu is epic. Great place to be“

“My other half and I visited here on a Saturday evening. There are 2 sitting an evening and the menu is a set 4 course menu (which you don’t see beforehand and is regularly changing). You also have to prepay the $85 per person when you book so just be aware of that. The restaurant is BYOB, something which we knew from reviews but was only shared with us by the restaurant about 60 minutes before our reservation.
We arrived promptly for our 6pm reservation and had our pick of seats on the communal table. The setup is one communal table and a few bar seats so if you are particular on where you want to sit then arrive right at your reservation time. Annoyingly someone was late to our seating so our service was delayed by about 25 minutes (by which point the person still hadn’t arrived) and this did result in the meal being slightly rushed.
We started with the Pepper Soup, which was out highlight of the evening (I would return just for this dish). The fish was perfectly cooked and the pepper soup had a good kick to it, a really well balanced dish. The next dish was a Nigerian cheese dish, I am not a cheese fan so can’t fairly judge this but the tomato sauce it came in was lovely (I just hated the cheese). Next we had Herring and Yams, I found this dish a little stodgy and the picketed herring flavour was slightly overwhelming. I enjoyed a small amount of it but found the dish difficult to finish. The meal ended with caramelised plantain, which was very sweet but a nice way to end the meal.
I really enjoyed the experience and the chef coming out and explaining each dish was a nice touch. Overall we had a nice evening but not sure we would rush back. The portion sizes were pretty small (although the yams were filling) and for the price point I think I would rather visit somewhere else. However I do encourage people to try Dept of Culture at least once.“

“My friends from elsewhere tried the place I recommend and totally agreed. The workers demonstrated real kindness. Workers make you feel welcome while assisting you. The meals contain surprising combinations that work harmoniously. I question the experience of those rating lower.“
