We had dinner at Joe Beef on July 3, and it absolutely lived up to its legendary reputation. From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed into an atmosphere that was warm, eclectic, lively, and full of personality. The restaurant has a charm that’s impossible to fake—it’s energetic without feeling rushed and makes you feel like you’re part of something special.

A huge thank you to Simon, our server, who made the evening exceptional. He struck the perfect balance between professionalism and fun, making us feel genuinely welcome while expertly guiding us through the menu. His wine recommendations paired beautifully with our meal, and his enthusiasm for the food and the restaurant was remarkable.

Every dish was outstanding, but the escargot was absolutely phenomenal—rich, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. The tomato salad was surprisingly one of the highlights of the evening, showcasing incredibly fresh ingredients with simple, flawless execution.

Simon also steered us toward fantastic wine selections that complemented every course, and he saved room for dessert with recommendations that were the perfect ending to an already incredible meal. Every bite was memorable.

“Excellent brunch — rich and indulgent. A really enjoyable brunch, made better by a lovely spot outside. The fresh fruit plate was beautifully presented and perfectly ripe, and the pastry board was the highlight — a flawless pain au chocolat, a rich almond croissant, and a classic butter croissant, all clearly made in-house. The bread basket arrived warm with several varieties and good butter. The charcuterie platter was solid but not the standout — decent quality, though a step below the rest of the spread. Service was a real strength: polished, attentive, and friendly throughout. Sitting outside in the garden setting was a real treat — calm, green, and relaxing. It’s a rich, calorie-heavy brunch — come hungry and pace yourself — but a very satisfying one.“

“My wife and I had a fantastic evening here on Friday. It has a warm atmosphere that made us want to stay much longer than we would have normally. The food was exquisite, and a good value for the quality provided. The wine list was extensive, featuring wines from several French regions, as well as some from Italy, Spain, US, and Canada. The servers were attentive, speaking French and English, and there was a sommelier on staff to help with the wine. The plates weren’t overly large, but we were quite filled after three courses, wine, and an aperitif. We are definitely coming back the next time we’re in town.“

“One of my favorite hotels ever!! Right in the heart of old Montreal, and a short walk to everything that Old Montreal has to offer. It sits on a beautiful cobblestone street, and is in an old, historic building. The rooms were beautiful, with windows that open to let in some great fresh air. I loved their little breakfast, which consisted of different breads each day, spread, cheese, and some cold pressed local juice. Just a top notch experience, and affordable too!“

“Great food and atmosphere. Came in here during a long layover in the city. Had the smoked salmon bagel and an iced coffee, bill came out to $37.66CAD with out tip. Feel that’s pretty average given the area. Food was very good and i enjoy the open kitchen view. The coffee was also delicious, got the salted Carmel latte. Menu had French and English and the service was fast and kind. Great spot for a nice lunch.“

Restaurant is loud and space is tight. Definitely reserve before going there.

“My daughter and I enjoyed a wonderful lunch here during our visit. I ordered the Table d’hôte lunch, while my daughter chose a few items à la carte. Everything was delicious, thoughtfully prepared, and beautifully presented.

A few dishes really stood out. I especially loved the butter sauce served with my daughter's trout, and the rhubarb custard dessert was fantastic. Rhubarb and flan are two of my favorite things, so it felt like that dessert was made just for me!

Our server was excellent. Although she spoke limited English, she was gracious, patient, and able to answer all of our questions. We felt very well taken care of throughout the meal.

One helpful tip for fellow English-speaking visitors: this restaurant is separate from the culinary school's student dining program. I misunderstood that before our visit and thought they were the same thing, so I wanted to mention it in case it helps someone else avoid the same confusion.

“Tucked away at the back of a church this restaurant is truly a hidden gem. We sat at the chefs table and were able to see all the food being prepared and ask the chefs more details about the food. We had the wine pairing menu which was excellent. Our server was very accommodating as one of the wines was not to our taste and they quickly replaced it with an excellent choice. The flavours in each course were delicious and made want to savour every bite. We will definitely be returning to Restaurant Candide again.“

“Stopped by Cafe Le Petit Flore for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. The vibe was great, the food was fresh, and the whole place had a warm, cozy atmosphere. I especially liked how friendly and welcoming everyone was from the moment I walked in.
