The Downtown Aquarium in Houston is a unique blend of an entertainment complex, aquarium, and dining experience, making it one of the city's most unusual attractions. The exterior feels like a small theme park, with rides such as the Diving Bell Ferris wheel and the Shark Voyage train, which takes guests through a tunnel surrounded by massive tanks filled with sharks.
Inside, the aquarium houses over 200 species of aquatic life from around the world, including colorful tropical fish, jellyfish, stingrays, and even a white tiger exhibit called Maharaja's Temple. Visitors can interact with and feed stingrays at the Stingray Reef, a hands-on experience. The atmosphere is incredible, with great views inside and out, and a perfect lighting level and sound environment that enhances the experience. The animal exhibits include many different creatures with information about each, and the tigers are beautiful and well cared for. The yellow and black striped salamander is also a favorite among visitors.
The Aquarium Restaurant allows diners to enjoy seafood and other dishes while sitting beside a 150,000-gallon tank filled with tropical fish, creating an immersive and unique dining experience. Many guests have praised the fresh seafood and great service, as well as the kid-friendly atmosphere, though the noise might bother some. The restaurant's location offers a dominating view of the aquarium tank that can be almost hypnotic.
Visitors can also meet BB the cockatoo and its handlers, and experience the breathtaking shark tunnel.
