“We made plans for our anniversary to stay at the Smithfield Inn and Restaurant. The new owner was very friendly and could not do enough to made our anniversary a happy occasion. The meal was excellent and our room was very cozy with fireplace and seating area separate from the bedroom. It was very clean and quiet. Then to top it off we were given breakfast coupons for the near by Gourmet Bakery. The bakery was also excellent. We would stay there again and longer to enjoy the cute small downtown shops. Be back soon!“

“Before COVID invaded our world, my wife and I routinely stayed at the Smithfield Inn for New Years Eve. The Wharf Hill Brewing Company, just down the street puts on a PIG drop countdown for New Years that is attended by several of the residents and those of us who discovered it years ago. The Wharf Hill Restaurant super good food as has the Smithfield Inn on past occasions. This year we returned for the first time since 2019 due in part to COVID and family health issues since that time. This time, as in the past we reserved seats for dinner. OMG, the food was out of this world this time. Their New Chef, Chef Gary, is fantastic. The entrees on offer were incredible to begin with, everyone eating that night were all a buzz with how good the food was, from a Rockfish Wellington, at the next table to the salmon dish at the next. We had our classic ritual prime rib that in and of itself was very good to the vegetables and roasted garlic and goat milk cheese mashed potatoes that made my mouth exploded with deliciousness, and me experiencing joy. Chef Gary has instituted a Sunday Brunch now and we'll be going soon. You should give this place a shot. You'll not be disapointed in your stay of a well kept historical inn and at the restaurant and bar downstairs. Go and enjoy yourselves.“

The quality of food is impeccable, the service is seamless, and they respect the value of your dollar.

“We had the King Suite and the bed was very comfortable. The bedroom was big and so was the living room area. There is only one bathroom so our daughtet had to use the one in our room. Although the pull out couch was okay she preffered the roll away bed that they provided when asked. When you walk into your room there is a switch by the door that you must turn on to turn the bathroom lights on and off in the bathroom. The bathroom was a nice size with good lighting. The floor can be a little slippery when wet. It may have been the type of tile. The pool area was very nice and enjoyed. The lobby area is a nice size. Oh although you cant tell the King Suite door closes and locks. The staff was very friendly all the time. When ever we needed anything they were there to assist. Overall I enjoyed our stay at this hotel. Besides the one bathroom in the suite I would give 10 because of the confort. If continental breakfast was availablenit would have been 12“

“Great food, very fresh! We came on a Sunday shortly after opening and they got our food to us quick and it was very good. Staff was super nice and helpful in making a choice of which option to get. Dining area is comfy and well lit. Really enjoyed our visit!“

“Just tried this place out for the first time. My burger was fantastic, and they had one of my favorite brews on tap. Wide variety of beers to choose from on their beer tap wall. I’m looking forward to making this one of my favorite hangouts in Newport News.“

“We used to visit Fin all the time, not so much since Fin & Tonic opened (and occasional visits to Steak & Tonic). Got there early on a Saturday night and it was already half full, filling up during our time there. They've got the best by-the-glass wine list around! Daou chardonnay was rich and fully oaked. The Purple Butterfly cocktail was luscious. Yummy soups, as always. A great light-meal bet would be to try the seafood-soup trio. They offered rockfish, which turned out to be striped bass, not "real" (aka Pacific) rockfish, so we passed. I'm sure it would be good though. The tuna tataki--a dish we often order--was beautifully presented and accompaniments were great, but the fish itself was surprisingly bland. We always get the foie gras app, since Kenny's one of the very few chefs who gets his livers from Hudson Valley, NY (instead of a pate of some sort) and have had it prepared many ways, usually on some bready thing like waffle or toast, with a complementary sweet-ish sauce. (Let me interrupt to congratulate Kenny on not coasting on his laurels with the same menu forever. He experiments, occasionally returning to his tried and true.) This time the foie gras was a different prep: thin slices served atop a tangy cream and some cress, paired with a couple of roasted potato slices. Description mentioned maple pearls, but didn't see nor taste them. We accepted the suggested classic pairing of sauterne--sweet acidity to cut the lush butteriness of the meat--but somehow the wine didn't really complement it. Maybe with different flavors in the dish next time. Short ribs with crab was delicious. We'll absolutely return--possibly as soon as next week, which is restaurant week!“

“By far, this was one of the best and most unexpected dining experiences. I have to give mad love and major high fives for a job well done. Josh, you are an incredible manager with an old soul, good vibes and it really shows that you put your heart into what you do. I cannot say how truly wonderful you and your staff are!!!! To Mikayla who made the Dirty Shirley (please forgive me if I spelled your name wrong love), you are awesome! Thank you so much my girl!!! Sadie, you have such a beautiful heart with excellent customer service and as our waitress, we truly couldn't have asked for more. Follow your dreams sweetheart! Peter, you have such a great laugh and are happy go lucky with good vibes! Jasmine, you are totally the all around good vibe with the best hair ever! Rock it!!!! And Mo.......you have the best smile, most infectious laugh, and take time to say hello. We love all of you so much and it felt more like family than it did a staff. That truly says a lot. Trust me ........I work in the customer service field of business so kudos! Y'all keep vibing and smiling!!! As Stick Figure says, "We're Putting Smiles on Faces!" 😊❤️ The food was on point! If there was something that wasn't up to par, let your waiter or waitress know. If Josh is there, you will not leave unsatisfied and if you do, your expectations were clearly way out of his control or overboard. “11/13/2022 Lunch with friends today. As always food was hot and cooked to our liking. Never disappointed. Today it was especially good. The Super Young Lady we had as a Server, her name was Rachel was an absolute pleasure!! All of us said the same thing. Attentive. Super Personality and just couldn’t have been any sweeter. We all brag about the food; but Young People like this deserve recognition and hopefully Management let’s her know how much we enjoyed the food, but she was the highlight of the meal. Excellent Job Young Lady!!“

“that ceiling fan and the flower pots positioned in the overhead was a pretty cool sight. I ordered the appetizer trio (chicken tenders, cheese bites, chips and spinach dip) and was pretty full before my meal even arrived! A party of two could order just that appetizer and one entree and be satisfied. They could’ve done better with their chicken fried steak though. It was quite soggy once my partner cut into it.
They had a number of 4 and 5 member families waiting on low-table and booth seating - but we were able to get into the high tables and bar area pretty quickly. I don’t know if they were short staffed but it took quite a while to get more tables cleaned off and available for those who’d rather have the low table/booth seating.
There was a 5 minute period where the bar area was completely void of employees and the phone lines behind the bar rang for a minute. Not sure what that was about but there should have been someone standing by for the line.“
