“I stopped by The Market Place and it turned out to be a great local spot for a quick and satisfying meal. The place feels like a classic neighborhood deli and market, but the food quality is surprisingly good.

Their sandwiches are the highlight—fresh bread, generous portions, and really flavorful fillings. I especially liked how many options they have, from hot deli sandwiches to pizza and fresh salads. Everything is made quickly, so it’s perfect when you want something tasty without waiting too long.

Overall, it’s a simple but reliable place with friendly service and solid comfort food. A great stop if you’re near Balboa Park and craving a good sandwich.“

“A very nice lady runs this place. The sandwiches are great and the prices are straight out of the pre-covid era they're so cheap. We came here because of the great reviews, otherwise I don't think I would have paid much notice to this unassuming establishment. But I'm glad we did!“

“I drive 30min round-trip to get these sandwiches once a month for the past year. Tried *most* deli's in SD, incl Mona Lisa, Hungry Lu's, Girl's and Poma's, while these are def good, this one's the winner. Their grinders (semolina sesame-topped) are THE BEST in SD because they stay true to the east coast classic - Pomas has bread just as good, IMO. Their speciality foccacia-equivalent is fine. And, their deli meats and ingredients are fresh, quality, and cut thin. Their pizza is mid - too thick and doughy for my liking and sauce is ok. Garlic knots are outta this world. Have not had the pasta or hot sandwiches. It is a deli/market first, pizza second. This is why food is 4/5. Service is great, although have had situations where they run out of their semolina bread, so call ahead if you want that. Not a negative, just goes to show how great this place is.

“Service and food were amazing! Unexpected gem of a little food spot on the 4th floor of an office building. My Gyro burger was great! Very flavorful, thick burger patties, perfect Gyro meat, veggies paired greatly, and the Tzatziki sauce helped tie it all together. Portion was perfect to have the burger by itself without any sides, you can get the half (1 patty) or full like I did (2 patties). The burger plus the Pastrami came out to around $30 and for the amount of food and quality, I’d say it’s a great deal. Will be back for sure to try the many different options that are offered. Too many good choices!“

“I pass by Big Front Door often heading to work. Decided to stop in and give it a try this afternoon. I got their Cobbler salad and my friend got the chicken parmesan sandwich. The portion sizes are very generous, I asked for extra dressing with my salad and didn't really need it as there was a decent amount left. The food tasted great and was served up without much of a wait time. The star of the show was the gentleman that helped us though! I wish I had taken the time to get his name to give him proper credit. He greeted us, made small talk while my friend and I decided what to have and as we were leaving he offered to clear our table for us. Very polite and friendly! I will definitely be adding this to my list of regular places to go.“

I've seen him take over this place, update & upgrade expanding not only his professionalism but the overall popularity in owning/running a well established business. “We have been visiting this area since September 5th, 2025. We are from Kentucky and have eaten at the Deli several times! Each time we have enjoyed many of their menu items. The service is excellent, as well as the friendly staff. We understand that they are preparing to add soft serve icecream to their menu. Not just icecream cones, but also sundaes, milkshakes, and possibly banana splits! Oh wow! We're definitely looking forward to this new addition! “The only family owned and operated Deli Restaurant and Coffee Spot in the heart of Downtown San Diego. If you're new in town, you won't find it just strolling through downtown San Diego, but ask anyone who works within a mile of 4th and B, they can point you to The Plaza Deli and 401 Brew Street. I've been eating here for 26 years. Beautiful family, amazing and friendly staff. Good portions. “.......this is the best deli in san diego county period !!........2 of my favorites are the meatball (of course !) and the muffaletta.......that meatball sammie has some of the best meatballs i've had on this planet.........and boy, does this deli have delicious bread which we all know can make or break the sammie, irregardless of what's stuffed inside.......a bit crusty on the outside but pillowy soft wonderness on the inside.......drenched in tasty marinara, some goood melted provolone and them tasty meatballs.............my soul ascends somewhere while i eat this tasty treat, every time..........and that muffaletta is a nice, lighter surprise than the one in the big easy.......the olive spread is nice and brawny like a good olive spread should be..........i've had a few others as well but wanted to highlight my faves...........you can't go wrong here and your tastebuds will say grazie grazie grazie.........“

This deli combo was much cheaper than nearby similar businesses. Not to mention, Fred’s hot turkey sandwich was much better (and fuller) than the sad, squished sandwich I received from corner bakery cafe the other day. “Definitely coming back here. Had amazing food the first experience. Me and my buddy shared 3 sandwiches. We started things with chicken Parmesan and it was phenomenal. I love pastrami so much. I got the Siberian train wreck, it was my favorite! My buddy wanted to get something on the lighter side for our 3rd sandwich. We got the chicken waldorf sandwich. It had grapes and Fiji apples ! Each order comes with pickled popcorn. Next time I come I want their slushee cocktails ! Plenty of place to sit !“
