“My friends hyped up Hotboys and they were right! All the food is delicious and has a kick!I found Hot was too much for me - it's drowning in pepper powder that overwhelms the chicken. You think you're fine for a minute, then suffer for the next 10 minutes. Medium Plus is much more restrained and flavorful for me, and is far less powdery. For reference, I am on the mild end of pepper enthusiasts, and authentic ghost pepper is overwhelming for me. Spice levels can vary, and it was much milder when I visited again in 2024.The food options are varied and delicious. The breakfast burrito is generous and filling, but can feel greasy. The sandwich has cole slaw that perfectly balances out the grease. The mac n cheese is excellent, with a unique cheese flavor and good texture. And the etouffee is a nice change-up with a mild kick. There's just a typical Coca Cola soda fountain - I'd love craft sodas like Blaze Pizza has.Staff were very helpful and let me try a hot nugget to discourage me (they were right). Most people like the dark meat sandwiches, but I prefer the tenders. At my most recent visit, I was disappointed by the atmosphere. There's only outdoor seating and a persistent whiff of vomit and decomposing trash.“
“Ordered the Buffalo sandwich and crispy chicken sandwich... there wasn't much crunch to it but they had good flavor. Other than that the chicken was sort of cold and the tots didn't have much flavor but overall it was good to try out.“
“Oh my the place resembles a true image of a "hole in the wall", but Oh!, don't let the location nor look fool you. The food is absolutely amazing! The chicken will have you thinking, "This reminds me of home!" The sides were delicious too and lastly, the counter staff were very polite and respectful. When I'm in the area, I'm most definitely going to return to, Gus' World Famous Fried Chicken!!!“
“The Bay Area seems to have nice places to have a good chicken sandwich. This is one of the nice places I've tried. The inside seemed a bit empty but lovely with the 'All you need is hot chicken'. Service was clunky but thorough. Waiting time was fine. I did notice that their fry selection is not too extensive. I went with waffle fries and the regular hot chicken sandwich, I believe medium was the spice level. I can recall there were layers of sweetness. The coleslaw was sweet to me, not sure if it was the pickles as well. The flavour was nice. The spice was potent but not extreme; very comfortable while I watched people pass by. Waffle fries were crispy and fresh. The sauce was more on the sweet side but a good layer of flavour. Water and utensils are self served by the doorway. Right in the middle of downtown Oakland. Easily accessible with public transport.“
“A hidden gem, food was really good and arrived fast, really filling and budget friendly.Because the place is kinda hidden in a building, it was a little empty but the service and atmosphere was really nice.We ordered a beef chow fun, a garlic chicken dish (?) and assorted appetizers. The beef chow fun was so good we could have called it the best affordable in town, the beef is tender and tasty and the flat noodles are nicely sauced; the garlic chicken dish was our least favorite because of the amount of vegetables which we weren't a fan of, the assorted appetizers was a good sharing plate with a little of every appetizer, each tasty in their own way. The waitress was patient and really nice. The street it's located in has a bunch of stuff to do and more things a few streets away as well. We had a really nice time at the restaurant and afterwards as well.recommended.“
“I got the chopped cheese sandwich. It is quite tasty but for $14.50 at a no frills counter eatery, I was expecting it to be bigger. The bread to meat ratio was also a little higher than I wanted. The french fries that came with it were excellent.“
“Decided on a late night fix for fried chicken and this hit the spot! Got the 6 piece hot and sweet with pickled radish and corn on the cob. Corn on the cob was a little bland but the chicken made up for it! Would definitely dine here again.“
“I stumbled upon this place after having a few drinks at bamboo bar, and I was glad that I did! I ordered the sucio, and a side of potato salad . The chicken sandwich was made perfectly, and it was juicy! It just needed extra sauce, which came at an additional cost of $1.25, for a small container (insert sad broke face) . The potato salad needed a bit more flavor too. The service was really chill, and even offered to let me charge my phone while I was waiting! Over all I would most definitely stop by, and try my sandwich with another side.“
“17Nov23 Love this place and over the phone yesterday an employee said they would be closing at 3pm today, Friday, Nov 17th. So, call if you have specific needs and time limitations. In short, do not expect them to be open until 6pm as listed on their website and here on Yelp.“
“Lunch at The Roost is one of our favorites in SF. As a pescatarian, this is actually the ONLY chicken I eat, anywhere - and it is delicious. The adobo seasoning is fabulous. Cole slaw has a unique flavor that I wish I could replicate at home. Do try the sweet potato croquettes, but leave room for their brown butter cookies!“
“I got a free slider on Drakes Birthday… thank you Drake. I ordered a reaper (the spiciest level) and it was not that spicy. It was so amazing and delicious though. This place is tied with my other favorite fried chicken place: Love Burn in south SF. For anyone who is afraid of the reaper, trust me it’s not spicy. Love Burn has spicier chicken at level 2 (first date) than the reaper. Dave’s Hot Chicken and their slaw is so so so good. Amazing chicken. Very great chicken and seasonings. LOVE ITTTTT“
“I got the ginger scallion ginger chicken with rice and a side of the broth! It was amazing!!! they could have used some chili oil on the side for an extra kick! But it was prepared very fast and filled me up as I was just got finished with a salon appointment! Pretty affordable for San “
“This is THE spicy chicken sandwich restaurant in the Bay Area. The spice level is perfect, they use dark meat (not white meat), and the rest of the sandwich complements the chicken perfectly. Love this place and would recommend it to all spicy lovers.“
“Still great years later. Very flavorful sandwich with nice crispy tofu. Limited choices but what they make they do well. Good design inside with more room for seating than I expected. Large, open room with tall tables at back and window seating up front.“
“We had What the Cluck cater and the food was delicious! We had the crunchy chicken with rice, it came with a sweet sour looking sauce and cucumber slices. We also had the mango sticky rice. Ordering was easy and delicious! I would come again.“
“Relaxed setting to get their famous fried chicken sandwich with a chicken claw in it! The official menu item is the Claude the Claw. If you go frequently, they give you a card where after you order 10 sandwiches and get the next one free!“
“BEST Korean Fried Chicken!! It even tastes good as leftovers - that's if you can hold back from eating everything in one sitting. 10/10 would recommend! Bookmark this place and you be the judge!* Fried Seaweed Rolls* Jalapeño Poppers* Takoyaki* Signature Three Flavors* Large Honey Butter Garlic* Special Curry Plate* Kimchi Fried Rice“
“This is am eating establishment I'll have to go to a few more times. I'd been watching video recipes of Hainanese Chicken Rice and checking Yelp, I was excited to find this eatery close by my employer.can't remember if I first stopped by on a Tuesday or Wednesday and while it showed open, they were I'm facto closed. Decided to try the, on a Friday around noon. With the farmers market in full swing in Old Oakland, I made the 15 minute walk to What the Cluck. I'd ordered ahead and my food, in a bag was waiting for me. Another 15 minutes to get back to work and needless to say the food was no longer warm. Not the fault of What theCluck and I could have heated it an oven or microwave. Opening it, like the dish, worldwide, it's relatively unimpressive looking. Lots of white from the poached chicken to the rice and the light colored broth. Still was the flavor with the price? Overall, it was satisfying, the chicken was moist and flavorful, with a nice fluffed rice with notes of chicken fat. The broth was simple by tasty and accompanied the chicken rice nicely. I did use the chili dipping sauce p, which topped off Friday meal. Would I go back? Yup! I plan on returning for this same dish and a chance to try others.. This was something a bit different from the usual Asians hole the wall places I usually favor in Chinatown.“
“Just wanted to leave on here to say late night pick up here are the best I’ve ever experience. I’ve always been hesitant to order late and pick it up because they would always have me waiting or my order is wrong. But here that wasn’t the case. The front desk guys have the best vibes and cool attitude and it took me lest than 3 minutes to pick up my order. Thank you guys“
