While there are lots of great spots, there are 3 spots that are consistently in the discussion: Frank Pepe’s, Sally’s Apizza and Modern.Having read several books about pizza over the years, in connection with my responsibilities as a pizza reviewer for the Wildwood Pizza Tour, I had heard the names of these pizzerias in the past. Pepe’s is the New Haven originator and, in a documentary I skimmed, the location that my hero Henry Winkler, the Fonz, recommended! Say no more!Trying to delay dinner as late as possible after crippling overindulgence and J. Timothy’s Tavern and B.T.’s Smokehouse earlier in the day, I walked into Pepe’s at 9:15 on a Tuesday night. I ordered the classic pizza with mozzarella. On a cold, rainy New Haven night, a hot pizza from the Pepe’s coal fired oven really hit the spot.Frank Pepe’s original skills came from being a baker, so the dough is one of the highlights. In the coal fired oven, it gets a bit of a chewyness and char. If I’m being honest, I didn’t find this pizza particularly unique compared to other coal fired pizzas I’ve had over the years, but the ingredients are very good and it is done well. I imagine this place is very consistent in its preparation. Every time I have been here we have ordered the hot antipasto which included two baked stuffed shrimp, two stuffed mushrooms, and two clams casino, along with the appetizer came a warm basket of homemade bread with butter. We had the New England Clam chowder and it was perfect I had a veal dish with mushrooms and prosciutto over noodles. Perfect did I say fresh mushrooms my brother had the zuppe di pesce, which he totally enjoyed. He got it without the calamari and another basket of warm bread. If you're looking for delicious Italian food with a very friendly waitstaff this is the place to go. “We visited Skappo for my birthday yesterday and our initial walk in the door we were greeted by this lovely woman who cleared a table immediately so we were not waiting long. Then mom (we know from the great introduction) came over to say hello and commented on my necklace. The food was so good and it was like we were at Nonna's house!! We started with the antipasto and the stuffed figs.So glad we chose both because those stuffed figs alone were worth the trip back. For our entrees I got the bolognese and my husband got the ziti with a creamy sausage sauce, both were delicious!!! It is worth the trip and we know we will be making return visits!! “We ordered 2 pizzas and a few meals using the site called Slice when we searched for a phone number for Vincent's. We felt that there were 2 issues with our order. We ordered penne ala vodka and received penne with meat sauce. We also ordered a specialty pizza called Margherita pizza and we received a cheese pizza. We did contact the restaurant and we were told that the ticket they received had not stated penne ala vodka but it did say meat sauce. As for the Margherita pizza they make it slightly 'different' and we had received the correct pizza. It looked and tasted like a cheese pizza and there was no fresh basil in or on it at all. The menu states that the Margherita pizza is made with Plum tomato sauce and fresh basil topped with mozzarella cheese. So it is different as this description does not state that fresh mozzarella is used but we expected to have seen the green fresh basil in the pie and the sauce tasted similar to what was on our sausage pizza.If we are to order from them we will not use the App and we definitely will not order a Margherita pizza as we like it the way it is 'normally' made and not the 'different' way that the restaurant makes it. Otherwise the food was good.“

The specials are always changing giving you an array of choices. We were there yesterday and ordered the Chicken Parm Ravioli and the Meatball Lasagna and salad. We didn't even make a dent in either one and the portions are massive. When I was looking at the Specials on the menu board the desserts sounded so good I knew I had to get something. “Ordered a large pepperoni pizza for pick up, i drove down there and the older women was in the middle of making the pizza as i walked in. I paid for the pizza with younger lady there and i had a comfortable seat as the pizza cooked, i like to get the pizza fresh and hot as soon as it comes out of the oven to bring it home still hot for the family. The inside of restaurant looked clean and cozy for dine in, tv's playing and holiday lights on. The pie with one topping and tax came to $21.47 which is alittle more than i would like to pay for a one topping large pizza but all in all it was cooked well and tasty still when i got home. Something to note is that if you want to do a half one topping pizza, it still cost the same amount for the one topping cost which i don't particularly like when restaurants do that.“
“We rented the little Italy pizza truck for my boyfriends 30th birthday, and we couldn’t be happier! First of all I’d like to point out that the party was in the back field of a farm, that had a very rough dirt road in and out. Luigi came out a few days prior to scope out the place, and said it wouldn’t be a problem. It DOWNPOURED the whole day of our party, so we were nervous about him being able to get down, not only did he make it down the dirt road all the way to the party, they showed up with smiles on their face and got right to work making their delicious pizzas! Everyone couldn’t stop talking about how good the pizza and service was. We had enough to feed over 75 people, and even had enough so people could bring some home with them. We chose not to pay the extra money per person for bringing in our own dessert, so we ordered the cake through Gusto’s which was delicious! The cookies ordered by Guso’s were left by many of my guests on the table as they were stale. Being Italian, I was very embarrassed and brought it to the manager, Ellen, attention the next day and she was going to talk to the manager. She checked with the “bakery” and they said the cookies were fresh. My suggestion is bring your own cookies and pay the addional $2.00 pp, you’ll be happy you did.
