“Very nice owner. Has a loyal clientele, as I've often overheard her greeting customers by name. :-) Their eggplant in garlic sauce and sesame tofu are my go-to's (I don't eat meat). Their sesame tofu has a nice crispy-not-too-soft texture, which I love. They always ask if you want sauces and chopsticks, which I really appreciate (as I don't like to avoid wasted packets and single use plastic). Take out only. The plaza that it's in can only be entered & exited on the Wilmington-bound side of Kirkwood hway.“

“I was looking for Chinese food around campus and this was the best decision. The food was perfectly saucy and flavorful and they served it on a plate AND the lady gave us cups of water!! I’ve never had that at a Chinese food place and it was above and beyond. It tasted delicious and the workers were all friendly. Prices are good and the portion size is good and I ended up ordering another because it was so delicious. This is my new favorite place and I definitely will come back.“

“I order here several times but today I ordered the pineapple mango smoothie and it was one if the best smoothies I had in a very long time. You can taste the freshness of the mango and pineapples. I gave it to my son and even he stated it was great Dad...
You must come try their smoothies and teas if you are close by to enjoy the freshness and best quality products and service in Delaware. I give them 10************“

“I've been ordering from here for 5 years now. The food is always delicious and the staff is fantastic. Tonight, I made a mistake when ordering through DoorDash (I was feeling like a lazy night in). A lady called me and was very helpful in getting it straight. I definitely recommend to others.“

“I've been coming to Joy Garden for decades now - living right around the corner and moving in to my childhood home has allowed me to share with my family some of the restaurants that I've always loved.Joy Garden was always a reminder of the way Chinese Food should be. I've traveled a lot over the years and I always find myself comparing other restaurants to this place. No one has been able to live up to them. With that being said, I've noticed a definite down-turn in quality in the past few years. This restaurant has been run by the same family for several decades - I always recognize the woman who I've seen for years, who is always a joy to speak with, and I've even now met her son taking orders, which is always a pleasure to see the family continuing the tradition of their hard-worked business!I believe that the economy has caused an uptick in cost; however, the increase combined with a lower-than-expected quality has been a sad disappointment. The restaurant is in dire need of revamping, and I would normally be able to look past this for quality food, but I'm left lacking from what they used to be.Perhaps changes in food regulations have contributed to recent changes, possibly Covid issues have affected the way things are done... this restaurant still offers "steamed chicken dumplings," which are near-impossible to find elsewhere... but things simply aren't the same.I couldn't imagine finding another place to satisfy my needs, but rising prices, lack of transparency regarding pricing and an overall change of food-quality, I cannot in good conscience rate them as highly as my nostalgia would wish.I wish these folks the best and hope for better days. I will still continue to patronage this establishment but hope they find a way to bring things back to their golden age so that generations more can enjoy the quality that I had come to rely on.Please do continue to support these wonderful people, as they are truly great what they do!“

“I highly recommend the guo bao rou (sweet and sour pork) and the liu rou duan (sautéed pork) at this restaurant. It’s probably the best Northeastern Chinese cuisine in the Greater Philadelphia area. I heard from the owner that they might be selling the place soon, so make sure to enjoy it while you can. Don’t miss out on this gem!“

“I've been a regular here for years, and this place never disappoints. The food is always fresh, flavorful, and made with care. You can tell it's authentic Chinese cooking , not overly commercial or watered down like a lot of places these days.
One thing I really appreciate is the generous portions. You always get great value for your money, and it’s clear the owner isn’t just trying to squeeze every dollar out of customers. Unlike some places that cut corners to maximize profit, here it feels like the focus is on quality and making people happy. That kind of integrity is rare.
Highly recommend this spot , it's not just a restaurant, it’s a place that’s built on pride, honesty, and real food.“

“I found out about New Number One through a friend of mine who hosts community-building jam sessions in the restaurant, and they have become one of my favorite restaurants in the area. The food is not only prepared quickly, but tastes amazing. And to allow my friend to use their space to foster a tightly-knit community with the shared interests of good music and good food is nothing short of spectacular.“

“My family and I have been ordering from here for years. We usually do take-out. Some times it's hard to place an order over the phone. But the food makes it worth the trouble. Place is always busy and because of that the food is always fresh. The owners are very nice and always try their best to satisfy the customer.“

“Tried a Chinese authentic restaurant in Maryland where the have the hot pot tray with whole fish like sea bass and tilapia so I was looking for a Chinese Sichuan restaurant and I found this one; tried it, it wasn’t as great as the Maryland tea but came close, now it’s our to go since it’s closer than Maryland. Their skewers are great to the egg plant; will try other menu as well.“

“If you’re looking for the gold standard of crispy tofu, look no further than No. 1 China. Their tofu is everything you want it to be: perfectly golden on the outside, with a satisfying crunch that gives way to a tender, flavorful center. The sauce clings to each piece just right—bold, savory, and slightly sweet without overpowering the tofu’s natural texture.
What impressed me most is consistency: every bite is crisp, not soggy, and the portions are generous. Paired with fresh broccoli and fluffy rice, it’s a balanced dish that feels both hearty and clean. I’ve had tofu from countless places, but this version stands out as the kind you crave again and again.
No. 1 China proves that tofu and vegan food can be a star on its own. Absolutely worth a visit if you’re a tofu lover—or even if you think you’re not!“

“Best Chinese food on Main, they have a mix of Chinese-American dishes but also more traditional Chinese food, specifically tons of Sichuan cuisine. It's so good! the Portions are always so huge too. If you're new to traditional Chinese, start with the more Americanized dishes first, but experiment!
P.S, do not be alarmed by lack of American-style restaurant service, its just how it is here, the food is great. Half of the bad reviews are about that lol and they dont understand cultural differences“

“Not the greatest, but certainly not bad.
Decent price for decent food that is made SUPER quick ?
Located in a convenient area, I recommend stopping by for a meal on your lunch break or in-between errands ??
Not really a place for dinner and there’s very little room to sit inside.
One suggestion I have is to update the menu pictures inside the restaurant, they look 15 years old!“

“I don’t understand the bad reviews. This is one of the best Chinese restaurants that I found in Newark Delaware being as though I’m from Philly and Philly got a lot of good Chinese spots. It was hard to find a good Chinese restaurant, but I finally found 1 which is this one! I seen some people complaining about the food overcook but I personally like my food overcooked. And maybe they seen peoples reviews about their Customer Service so they gotten better because when I call, they don’t have an attitude with me. You should give them a try.“

“This is the best Chinese place around. Also have the most friendly service, I am greeted like family when I come in. The food is amazing. Very large portions always taste fresh. The place is clean and willing to accommodate specific requests. My family usually orders every Sunday! We have tried others and nothing compares. For large order they are always quick and ready when I arrive.“

“Had a great meal at ugly dumpling, greeted with great service right away! Service was personable and accommodating to my stroller and a high chair for toddler. The establishment is extremely clean and beautifully designed. Waitress was helpful in assisting with menu, family style small plates, 3-4 plates for a couple suggested. We loved the dumplings with spicy sauce on side and sesame noodles. So fun to see everyone working on hundreds of beautiful, delicate, and delicious dumplings! 🥟 thank you ugly dumpling team!“
