“Rice has long been our go-to place in DE for sashimi: thick cuts (as they should be), always fresh, expertly prepared. We love the wonton soup and fried rice as well, and everything we've tried from the non-sushi menu has always been a cut above. Everything tastes prepared fresh that day; the vegetables are crisp; it's never overloaded with salty, gooey sauce. So many places just cover up mushy vegetables and old rice with sugar-heavy sauce because it's what we Americans expect, but this restaurant seems to actually care about putting out quality. “I get take out from here regularly. The house lo mein is really good and full of flavor. The Wonton soup lacks a little flavor in the broth but the dumplings are good.

“Vietnamese iced coffee and taro milk tea were both delicious. Onigiri, salmon and eel were both enjoyed as well as the takoyaki. Wing ding were crispy with great flavor. The golden buns were soft inside with the crunch of the outside made for a great bite. The gyoza, shiu mai both had the crunch with soft fillings, both with a burst of flavor. Singapore fried rice vermicelli was flavorful and delicious, and a large portion. We enjoyed our lunch very much (including 3 kids). Service was friendly and quick.“

“This Chinese food was bomb! The sauce on my chicken and broccoli with garlic sauce was amazing. I had the perfect amount of spice to give it the little kick without being overly spicy. The shrimp fried rice was very small, but very good. I had a decent amount of shrimp in it and had very good flavor. The rice was not greasy. I took off a star because I got the combination platter and it was supposed to come with an eggroll, but it was not in the bag. Even though the worker behind the counter told me he put duck sauce in the bag for it.

“I was looking for Chinese food around campus and this was the best decision. The food was perfectly saucy and flavorful and they served it on a plate AND the lady gave us cups of water!! I’ve never had that at a Chinese food place and it was above and beyond. It tasted delicious and the workers were all friendly. “I've been coming to Joy Garden for decades now - living right around the corner and moving in to my childhood home has allowed me to share with my family some of the restaurants that I've always loved.Joy Garden was always a reminder of the way Chinese Food should be. I've traveled a lot over the years and I always find myself comparing other restaurants to this place. No one has been able to live up to them.With that being said, I've noticed a definite down-turn in quality in the past few years. This restaurant has been run by the same family for several decades - I always recognize the woman who I've seen for years, who is always a joy to speak with, and I've even now met her son taking orders, which is always a pleasure to see the family continuing the tradition of their hard-worked business!I believe that the economy has caused an uptick in cost; however, the increase combined with a lower-than-expected quality has been a sad disappointment. The restaurant is in dire need of revamping, and I would normally be able to look past this for quality food, but I'm left lacking from what they used to be.Perhaps changes in food regulations have contributed to recent changes, possibly Covid issues have affected the way things are done... this restaurant still offers "steamed chicken dumplings," which are near-impossible to find elsewhere... but things simply aren't the same.I couldn't imagine finding another place to satisfy my needs, but rising prices, lack of transparency regarding pricing and an overall change of food-quality, I cannot in good conscience rate them as highly as my nostalgia would wish.I wish these folks the best and hope for better days. “Awesome party venue! We come here often for lunch or dinner and this past weekend we had a 90th birthday party for my mother-in-law. It was a perfect choice for a celebration. Everyone could find the types of food they like best, which is very convenient but the best part of our experience was the staff. From the moment we arrived to the moment that we left they could not have been more helpful! They helped us set up our space, let us borrow carts, were fine with us bringing a tv to show a slideshow and a small microphone set up. The space itself was great - a room at the front of the restaurant, slightly separated from other diners. Extra perk - there is a dollar tree next door so we could grab last minute decorations. Hibachi Grill was a lovely part of our joyful celebration. Thanks to all of their staff.“

The food was good too but they dont give itemised receipts and supposedly the tip is added automatically. The Bill for two people was about 46$“

“First time I ordered from here, and it was REALLY good! The boneless ribs were nicely done with caramelized bits of sauce... Which I love. The broccoli with brown sauce was perfect! Steamed but crunchy. The only down side was the shrimp toast being oily, but it's the nature of shrimp toast so that's on me for ordering it. Definitely recommend, and will order from here again.“

“My family and I have been ordering from here for years. We usually do take-out. Some times it's hard to place an order over the phone. But the food makes it worth the trouble. The phone conversation was overwhelming because of her not being patient on what was being said; every time I tried to speak she kept interrupting me asking the same question. In person experience was totally different and so much better than the phone 📞 this was my first time visiting because I had to try this egg drop soup. I kept hearing about it and how delicious it is! It was good, tasted like chicken noodle soup and loved the fried noodles inside of the soup. I would request green onion (scallions) next time. “I've been eating here for years and it is one of my favorite places in Newark, or anywhere in Delaware for that matter. It is a really unusual restaurant and is not very user-friendly to people used to American Chinese food.

The people here don't speak great English, which can be annoying. However they are patient and will work with you even if you are not familiar with the food.

And the food is really good. The prices increased after COVID but I still think they are excellent value for your money.

If you are intimidated, some items I recommend are Cumin Lamb, Shredded Pork with Dried Bean Curd & Chinese Celery, Shredded Pork & Potato with Long Hot Peppers, Fish Fillet with Sour Cabbage & Vermicelli Soup, Scallion Pancakes, Stir Fried Lotus Root & Veggie with Cashew & Walnut, Shredded Potato with Long Hot Peppers in Vinegar Sauce, Eggplant in Garlic Sauce, Family Style Bean Curd, Sauteed Baby Bok Choy, Braised Eggplant with String Beans, and Pumpkin Pancakes. There are also some other items not on the main menu. I forget what it's called but there is a casserole that is a lot like Italian Wedding Soup, it has meatballs, noodles, and cooked greens in a clear broth.

The food here is VERY different. It's most similar to sichuan/szechuan food but even there it is quite different from that. Some of it can be very spicy. But there are mellow items too.

Give this place a chance. It is unusual and different but really full of flavor and there are some fantastic things that will really open you to a new culinary experience!“

Food is hot, well bagged. You take as much soy sauce etc as desired, food is not overly salted.
I place my order on online . Order is always ready. Staff are friendly, help me to the car with bags.

“The American Chinese food is awesome, but if you want something special, try the Thai menu. The Thai basil chicken and the parang curry are favorites in our house. On the regular menu, the spicy chicken combination platter is my favorite, but all the food is good. You can't go wrong here!“
