“Had a great meal at ugly dumpling, greeted with great service right away! Service was personable and accommodating to my stroller and a high chair for toddler. The establishment is extremely clean and beautifully designed. Waitress was helpful in assisting with menu, family style small plates, 3-4 plates for a couple suggested. We loved the dumplings with spicy sauce on side and sesame noodles. So fun to see everyone working on hundreds of beautiful, delicate, and delicious dumplings! 🥟 thank you ugly dumpling team!“

“Vietnamese iced coffee and taro milk tea were both delicious. Onigiri, salmon and eel were both enjoyed as well as the takoyaki. Wing ding were crispy with great flavor. The golden buns were soft inside with the crunch of the outside made for a great bite. The gyoza, shiu mai both had the crunch with soft fillings, both with a burst of flavor. Singapore fried rice vermicelli was flavorful and delicious, and a large portion. We enjoyed our lunch very much (including 3 kids). Service was friendly and quick.“

“I was looking for Chinese food around campus and this was the best decision. The food was perfectly saucy and flavorful and they served it on a plate AND the lady gave us cups of water!! I’ve never had that at a Chinese food place and it was above and beyond. It tasted delicious and the workers were all friendly. Prices are good and the portion size is good and I ended up ordering another because it was so delicious. This is my new favorite place and I definitely will come back.“

“We came for the sushi. Got a bubble tea and the boba is the softest boba I have ever had. I think they may actually make them in house so good. The sushi deal is great comes with miso soup and salad all was make with care and really fresh. This place is pretty clean which I appreciate. The service was great everyone was super nice. The food is made with care and spiced really well. It’s probably the best Miso soup I have had and I have traveled a lot. I was really happily surprised!“

“We had the pig intestine stir fried dry pot, it was authentic and delicious. But the BBQ was a bit misleading. As you can see that the skewers were cooked in the kitchen and brought out and put on the heated box. Those lamb, beef and chicken skewers were delicious.“

“I've been ordering from here for 5 years now. The food is always delicious and the staff is fantastic. Tonight, I made a mistake when ordering through DoorDash (I was feeling like a lazy night in). A lady called me and was very helpful in getting it straight. I definitely recommend to others.“

“I've been coming to Joy Garden for decades now - living right around the corner and moving in to my childhood home has allowed me to share with my family some of the restaurants that I've always loved.Joy Garden was always a reminder of the way Chinese Food should be. I've traveled a lot over the years and I always find myself comparing other restaurants to this place. No one has been able to live up to them.With that being said, I've noticed a definite down-turn in quality in the past few years. This restaurant has been run by the same family for several decades - I always recognize the woman who I've seen for years, who is always a joy to speak with, and I've even now met her son taking orders, which is always a pleasure to see the family continuing the tradition of their hard-worked business!I believe that the economy has caused an uptick in cost; however, the increase combined with a lower-than-expected quality has been a sad disappointment. The restaurant is in dire need of revamping, and I would normally be able to look past this for quality food, but I'm left lacking from what they used to be.Perhaps changes in food regulations have contributed to recent changes, possibly Covid issues have affected the way things are done... this restaurant still offers "steamed chicken dumplings," which are near-impossible to find elsewhere... but things simply aren't the same.I couldn't imagine finding another place to satisfy my needs, but rising prices, lack of transparency regarding pricing and an overall change of food-quality, I cannot in good conscience rate them as highly as my nostalgia would wish.I wish these folks the best and hope for better days. I will still continue to patronage this establishment but hope they find a way to bring things back to their golden age so that generations more can enjoy the quality that I had come to rely on.Please do continue to support these wonderful people, as they are truly great what they do!“

“My family and I have been ordering from here for years. We usually do take-out. Some times it's hard to place an order over the phone. But the food makes it worth the trouble. Place is always busy and because of that the food is always fresh. The owners are very nice and always try their best to satisfy the customer.“

“My order was a pick up. I called in before picking up my order. The phone conversation was overwhelming because of her not being patient on what was being said; every time I tried to speak she kept interrupting me asking the same question. In person experience was totally different and so much better than the phone 📞 this was my first time visiting because I had to try this egg drop soup. I kept hearing about it and how delicious it is! It was good, tasted like chicken noodle soup and loved the fried noodles inside of the soup. I would request green onion (scallions) next time. The veggies fried rice with a shrimp 🍤 was good too! Overall, I am pleased and will visit again! Oh yeah, they’re very clean!“

“I've been eating here for years and it is one of my favorite places in Newark, or anywhere in Delaware for that matter. It is a really unusual restaurant and is not very user-friendly to people used to American Chinese food.

The people here don't speak great English, which can be annoying. However they are patient and will work with you even if you are not familiar with the food.

And the food is really good. The prices increased after COVID but I still think they are excellent value for your money.

If you are intimidated, some items I recommend are Cumin Lamb, Shredded Pork with Dried Bean Curd & Chinese Celery, Shredded Pork & Potato with Long Hot Peppers, Fish Fillet with Sour Cabbage & Vermicelli Soup, Scallion Pancakes, Stir Fried Lotus Root & Veggie with Cashew & Walnut, Shredded Potato with Long Hot Peppers in Vinegar Sauce, Eggplant in Garlic Sauce, Family Style Bean Curd, Sauteed Baby Bok Choy, Braised Eggplant with String Beans, and Pumpkin Pancakes. There are also some other items not on the main menu. I forget what it's called but there is a casserole that is a lot like Italian Wedding Soup, it has meatballs, noodles, and cooked greens in a clear broth.

The food here is VERY different. It's most similar to sichuan/szechuan food but even there it is quite different from that. Some of it can be very spicy. But there are mellow items too.

Give this place a chance. It is unusual and different but really full of flavor and there are some fantastic things that will really open you to a new culinary experience!“

“The American Chinese food is awesome, but if you want something special, try the Thai menu. The Thai basil chicken and the parang curry are favorites in our house. On the regular menu, the spicy chicken combination platter is my favorite, but all the food is good. You can't go wrong here!“

“I don’t understand the bad reviews. This is one of the best Chinese restaurants that I found in Newark Delaware being as though I’m from Philly and Philly got a lot of good Chinese spots.
