“Do not sleep on this little mom and pop shop. For local prices you can “bang for your buck” or aka “get your moneys worth.” Would highly recommend. I got the spicy seafood ramen combo and it was a solid meal for this beach babe. I’m a huge fan of supporting local restaurants when I travel and I’m so glad I found this place after the adventures of the day.“

“Pretty dang good chicken. Stopped here for a snack. 3 of us shared the fried chicken with brisket fried noodles. It came with a side so we picked the mashed potato and gravy. Well all really enjoyed the chicken. Skin was crunchy and nicely seasoned inside it was juicy and tender. The fried noodles went well with the chicken as it gave the smoky flavor from the brisket. The mashed potatoes was good...a little too buttery for me but we still ate it all. Will definitely be back for the chicken and will try some of the other dishes.“

“Hidden Gem in the Neighborhood! We stumbled upon Hangry Mama Bar & Kitchen last night, a true hidden gem in our neighborhood that has been delighting locals for a year now. The fried noodles, rib eye steak, and the pork belly wrap on a sizzling plate were all top-notch. The pork belly wrap with cheese and sauce was incredibly scrumptious, making a return visit inevitable to explore more of their enticing menu. The ambiance is fantastic, staff are friendly and welcoming, and the cleanliness of both the place and restroom is commendable. The AC unit works wonders, and the decor adds to the overall charm. Karaoke was a blast and a special shout-out to Shania for making our experience even more enjoyable. Thank you, Hangry Mama, for a memorable evening! Happy Holidays and wishing you all great success in the new year. ALOHA“

“Solid Japanese meal. Sushi seemed a little overpressed. Wish they'd offered green tea with the meal rather than at the end. Busy tonight, but nice service. Shave ice size got smaller this year. Key lime pie was nice. Ice cream/sorbet kinda steep price.“

Plantation Life Cafe Asian Fusion • $$

“This isn't a very well-known tourist spot but is a super way to learn about some of Hawaii's agricultural development. Families with small children may not wish to choose this, depending upon their kids' interests. A guided walking tour is available. If you have the time, it is helpful to read the background information provided in the museum prior to walking the grounds. It is amazing to learn about the history of the sugar industry in Hawaii and gives you insight into the multicultural population that forms the basis for the present Hawaiian state - as native Hawaiians suffered elimination from various diseases brought to their islands by overseas explorers, immigration of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Puerto Rican, Filipino and even Portuguese people supported the sugar industry during its heyday. Prejudice was rampant as the industry strove to survive. This fascinating, informal tour takes a little over an hour but is worth it to appreciate the island history. Be aware that this site is only open on weekdays with limited hours (10AM-2PM, if I recall).“

“Steak Plate was well seasoned, tender and cooked perfect for my tastes. Pork belly was essentially deep fried extra thick cut bacon with an aioli sauce. Definitely a winner for me. It was crispy and tender at the same time, if that makes any sense.“

“Food is always consistent and flavors are always on point. I love the shrimp fried rice and the beef curry! ? Love the miso soup to get the flavors in and also to wash everything down. RAMEN IS NEXT LEVEL and the BROTH is always worth the commute. Service always feels rushed but that's also how soon they get the order in and the food on the table. Even when you order take out, flavors are exactly the same as when dining in.“

“Our party of 6 (4 adults, 1 kid, 1 baby), came to GEN on a Friday night for an early dinner at 5 PM. Make sure you look at the menu beforehand because as soon as you sit down, they’ll ask what you want to order. Luckily, my sister/BIL have been here before so they took the reins for the first round. Some of the things we ordered were the Hawaiian steak, garlic chicken, brisket, honey soy beef belly, pork cheek, and galbi. My top three were the Hawaiian steak, honey soy beef belly, and pork cheek. I liked the marinades on the steak and the beef belly. It’s nice that they use different flavors and not the same marinade for every meat. The pork cheek was so tender. We ended up getting three orders in total but I probably could have eaten another one on my own. They also bring out bowls of rice as soon as you’re seated, but you definitely don’t want to waste stomach real estate on that. Plus, the rice looked really mushy. I liked that they serve banchan. My favorite was the radish paper because the sourness helped balance out the richness/saltiness of the meats. I must have eaten an entire bowl of these by myself. They also have 9 different dipping sauces available, so you’ve got options. I wish they served something sweet at the end of the meal - maybe a scoop of ice cream to go? But, not a deal breaker. Our waitress was not very attentive. She would constantly forget things and she seemed annoyed whenever we asked her for something, so that took away from the experience a bit. Overall, I still had a great meal here. It’s best to go with 4 or more people so you can try a bigger variety of things, and you’re not stuck trying to finish a plate of something you may not like. Also better to go early because when we left around 7ish, there were lots of parties waiting for a table. I found out they have a location here in NYC, so I’ll have to check that one out and see how it compares.“
