“I have gone to Andros Taverna for many years now where I am never disappointed and always impressed with the service, the quality of food and ingredients, the atmosphere and the passion in general. Chef Doug Psaltis is a true expert and artist performing at the highest levels. The gyros are the best, best gyros in Chicago by far, the seafood world class, the homemade bread and pita are incredible. The foods and meats are cooked over wood fire, wood fire grilled. We had our daughters baptism catered from here which was excellent assortment of Greek food - this is a Greek restaurant you will go to for many years to come.“

“I’ve been to Taverna twice with very different experiences. The first time I tried to get takeout but they don’t really do that so I sat on the porch with my dog, had a beer, and waited for my food while they packaged it up. They messed up in the best way possible and the chef thought the food was for a staff member so he gave me like 8 Pitas instead of traditionally 4. Lamb and pita was amazing and was a big fan.

Fast forward to last Friday, I went with 2 other people to sit down. Every Friday at 6-9 I believe it is, they have a wonderful artist who sings at the restaurant. Very nice vibe and was a good start to the dinner. Unfortunately the experience went downhill from there. After she was done, they played what sounded like Avicii hype music which just didn’t really fit the vibe. It felt like being at a nice restaurant listening to music that is played at a club. I ordered the meatball soup and while it was being prepared, we smelled something burning in the kitchen. Once my soup was delivered, it was clear that the bread that comes with the soup was what was burnt. We ordered the chicken, the mushroom pasta, the lamb sandwich, and 8 pitas. Our food was delivered but without the pitas and we waited about 10 minutes before our server came back over and asked if we needed anything else. We asked about the pitas and the server clearly didn’t submit it. Took about 10 minutes or so to get them to our table and was not ideal since the person who ordered the chicken was planning on making a wrap with them.

Overall, I do think this place has potential. The food is truly good. The music artist was phenomenal and the venue is nice. Being served burnt bread, service being slow / forgetting orders, and the music choice just made it hard for me to make it a priority amongst the other food restaurants in the area. I hope they’re able to make these small changes so they can have more success in the neighborhood moving forward.“

“Tom’s Carry-Out has a massive menu—everything from Greek chicken and gyros to ribs, fried seafood, burgers, and Mexican dinners. I usually avoid places with menus this big, but Tom’s proved to be the exception.

I ordered the quesadilla dinner. It was a bit greasy but still tasty and filling. It came with Mexican rice, refried beans (I opted for double rice), and a TomTom tamale. The tamale was a little dry and could have used salsa. My husband had the grilled chicken pita and said it was the best he’s ever had—freshly grilled chicken with lettuce and tomato. I also spotted the Greek chicken at another table, and it looked excellent.

Beer is reasonably priced at $3.50 for domestic and $4.50 for imported. There’s a separate gaming room, which I appreciated since it keeps the dining area quieter. Seating is limited to about a dozen tables, but staff cleared tables quickly, so there was no wait. They also partner with popular delivery services.

Parking is shared with nearby businesses, but most spots seem to be used by Tom’s customers. I’m already planning to try the Greek chicken and Gyros next.“

The locations I’ve been to, Winnetka and Avli Taverna, have a great philosophy, atmosphere and is intimate for couples, yet easily accommodates a family of 4 comfortably for a casual yet fine dining experience. “Always loved their Greek pastries, they are the best, started going to them 60 yrs ago with my mom and dad. We were always going to Hellas for our parties baptisms and weddings. All our holiday needs were easily available for us. Unfortunately, we moved out to Poplar Grove, Illinois near Belvedere and have missed them greatly. “My fiancé and I have been a gyro war. I’m a Skokie Dengeos girl and he’s a diehard Squabs fan. While it’s hard to compete with childhood memories after trying Squabs I totally get it. The gyro was perfectly cooked, the tzatziki was beautiful, the fries were delicious. The absolute standout was the customer service. I was having such a bad day. I confused the gyro plate with the gyro dinner and they took such good care of me. I had cried the whole ride over and left with the biggest smile and a plate of leftovers. 10/10 I will be coming back every chance I get.“

Without even knowing anything about this restaurant in advance, and in town from Pittsburgh for a youth hockey tournament, we happened to drive by and decided to stop and eat there. Walking in the atmosphere was fantastic and the service was spectacular. We sat at the bar, had a few cocktails, unbelievable appetizers, terrific meals for dinner followed by the most amazing desserts ever. While we were there, we had an opportunity to meet and chat with the owner for a little while. Always a pleasure to talk to someone that is passionate about what they do and appreciates both their employees and customers. It was a fantastic dining experience and I highly recommend this place. “So I have been eating here for Years, and the food is fresh and well done, I normally get a pork souvlaki and saganaki and the Greek potatoes are amazing. The owners are dedicated and super nice and you can byob to the patio in the summer. To us it is a staple of 3 to 4 times a month, fresh food, very good seasonings and great tzatziki ,super fresh pita as well. It is better than more of the larger restaurants in Greektown and not greasy like many storefronts that do Gyros.“
