“I have gone to Andros Taverna for many years now where I am never disappointed and always impressed with the service, the quality of food and ingredients, the atmosphere and the passion in general. Chef Doug Psaltis is a true expert and artist performing at the highest levels. The gyros are the best, best gyros in Chicago by far, the seafood world class, the homemade bread and pita are incredible. The foods and meats are cooked over wood fire, wood fire grilled. We had our daughters baptism catered from here which was excellent assortment of Greek food - this is a Greek restaurant you will go to for many years to come.“

Our server Jackie was professional, polite, kind, and quite knowledgeable about the dishes on the menu as well as the chef's specials. We ordered the choriátiki (Greek village salad with imported delicious feta cheese), the fried calamari (which was tender and had a unique flavor profile in its breadcrumb coating), the grilled octopus as appetizers; and two different lamb shank dishes for the main course. “I’ve been to Taverna twice with very different experiences. The first time I tried to get takeout but they don’t really do that so I sat on the porch with my dog, had a beer, and waited for my food while they packaged it up. They messed up in the best way possible and the chef thought the food was for a staff member so he gave me like 8 Pitas instead of traditionally 4. Lamb and pita was amazing and was a big fan.

Fast forward to last Friday, I went with 2 other people to sit down. Every Friday at 6-9 I believe it is, they have a wonderful artist who sings at the restaurant. Very nice vibe and was a good start to the dinner. Unfortunately the experience went downhill from there. After she was done, they played what sounded like Avicii hype music which just didn’t really fit the vibe. It felt like being at a nice restaurant listening to music that is played at a club. I ordered the meatball soup and while it was being prepared, we smelled something burning in the kitchen. Once my soup was delivered, it was clear that the bread that comes with the soup was what was burnt. We ordered the chicken, the mushroom pasta, the lamb sandwich, and 8 pitas. Our food was delivered but without the pitas and we waited about 10 minutes before our server came back over and asked if we needed anything else. We asked about the pitas and the server clearly didn’t submit it. Took about 10 minutes or so to get them to our table and was not ideal since the person who ordered the chicken was planning on making a wrap with them.

Overall, I do think this place has potential. The food is truly good. The music artist was phenomenal and the venue is nice. Being served burnt bread, service being slow / forgetting orders, and the music choice just made it hard for me to make it a priority amongst the other food restaurants in the area. I hope they’re able to make these small changes so they can have more success in the neighborhood moving forward.“

“There are so many interesting, enticing items on the menu, which is designed for sharing. We found it very difficult to pick just one appetizer, main and dessert per diner. Although there were just two of us, we ended up ordering six appetizers in addition to our mains and desserts. I recommend going with a large group, so that everyone can have taste of the menu's many well-prepared offerings.“

The locations I’ve been to, Winnetka and Avli Taverna, have a great philosophy, atmosphere and is intimate for couples, yet easily accommodates a family of 4 comfortably for a casual yet fine dining experience. The menu is thoughtful, including imported Greek oils, crafted unique Greek dishes masterly designed with every detail. Every desire the guest needs is addressed and executed. The plates are exquisite and the atmosphere is heavenly, magical! “Absolutely outstanding place for sandwiches, coffee, and Italian/Greek/Mediterranean cuisine. Nothing fancy, but quite filling for lunch. A nice mix of students, locals, tourists, and university faculty or staff. Everything is low key delicious and vaguely retro without being Disneyfied. Not a diner per se, but a cousin of one. Fave place in Hyde Park!“

“Always loved their Greek pastries, they are the best, started going to them 60 yrs ago with my mom and dad. We were always going to Hellas for our parties baptisms and weddings. All our holiday needs were easily available for us. Unfortunately, we moved out to Poplar Grove, Illinois near Belvedere and have missed them greatly. “I just had the best gyro of my life at Gyro Guys! From the first bite, I knew I was in for something special. The gyro was completely full of meat and the meat was perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection. This gyro was a real nuke it was juicy, tender, and packed with flavor. The pita was soft and fresh, and the tzatziki sauce was creamy and tangy, complementing the gyro perfectly. The staff was friendly and welcoming, making the experience even better. I had the pleasure of meeting the owner who is known as Chef Zuzu, he told me they recently opened up and seems like a great, honest, and hardworking business owner. “BEST GREEK SALADS ! I always order from here and I’m never disappointed! I’ve never had a better Greek salad than Mr. Zee’s. Their Greek salad dressing ….. I mean I wish I had a gallon of it at home so I can put it on everything. I think they should start selling it or maybe give me the recipe ??
