“We were a party of six on a Tuesday night. The waitstaff was pleasant and quick to bring our chips, salsa, water and other beverages. Meals were piping hot, and I heard no complaints from our table. I had the Pork Quesadilla entree and regular Margarita without salt, which were both very good, and I noted that all meal portion sizes were large. We stayed at the table after we ate and were not rushed out, which we appreciated. Right off Hwy. 41 in Schererville, IN - easy to find. Thanks for the tasty drinks and great food!“

“Delicious 100% Authentic Mexican food, freshly prepared. I went with the Zacatecana burger and it did not disappoint at all, I added avocado slices and it enhanced my burger. They are known for their “Quesabirria’s” along with ramen, it was very delicious and flavorful. I would definitely recommend this homey feel restaurant, you will not regret it. “Our first time at 'La Carreta' was great! Our host, Benito, was very kind to us and gave the kids some candy. I loved that they had margaritas in different flavors and sizes—some glasses were even bigger than they looked in the photos! Our waiter was very attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. The food was good for the price, and they let us swap ingredients in our dishes without any issues. Even though we stayed a bit past closing time, the owner never rushed us out; they were so nice to let us stay a little longer.“

I went back the next week for the steak tacos, and they were just as impressive. The corn tortillas were cooked perfectly with that light crisp you want, and the steak was seasoned just right.

The red sauce has a good kick, so if you’re sensitive to heat you’ll feel it, but the flavor makes it totally worth it. Service was quick, prices were fair, and the food has been consistently excellent. I’ll definitely be going back to try more of the menu.“

“We found this place on our way to Raleigh, NC from Chicago. Stopped here after reading reviews online. TRUST THE REVIEWS that say this place is good...IT IS GOOD! We just moved to the Chicago area from South Texas, so we know good Mexican food and this place does not disappoint! If you are anywhere near Gary Indiana, you have to stop in to Chela's. It's not fancy at all, but is very clean and the prices are good. We had the Birria Tacos, chips and salsa and several different meat tacos. Then, on our way back from North Carolina, we stopped in again! My fiance thinks this is the best Mexican food outside of Texas. THAT'S saying something! We can't wait to go back!“

“This has always been one of my favorite taco spots. They serve some of the most flavorful tacos and burritos I’ve ever had.

Upgrading to a dinner meal is only a dollar more and includes rice and beans, which is a great deal. Prices are very reasonable, especially for today, averaging around $13 per meal, and the portion sizes are very generous. The staff is friendly and attentive, which makes the experience even better.

Parking can be a bit challenging. There are about four spots in the front and six in the back, so it may take a few minutes during busy takeout times. Since the food is cooked in the dining area, you will likely leave smelling like grilled steak, so I would avoid wearing clothes that need dry cleaning.
