“Was in tonight for dinner in GR on the front patio with a couple girlfriends and we were approached by a homeless man who tried to grab our bags. I’m reaching out to praise your manager and the rest of the staff for taking our concerns seriously and jumping into action. Top notch team you’ve got there. You were already a go to spot for us, but even moreso now. Thank you for a great spot, delicious menu, and for making your patrons safety a top priority!!“

“Bravo to the staff at Max's in Grand Rapids! We went last night with 6 people, and were celebrating 2 birthdays. I had not done my research and thought we were in for a 'canned' touristy experience. I was very wrong. We were seated very close to our reserved time (highly recommend making a reservation a few days in advance). You cannot be in the bar area if you aren't 21. We were seated on the second floor, and we requested a table set apart due to hearing concerns; the booth was perfect. First, the kitchen staff must be a well-oiled machine, so much food and so unique and delicious! Our waitress Katie was excellent: quick with a smile, accommodating of special requests, seemed unflappable, and did a great job timing how our food came out (we ordered some apps, some entrees, then dessert - all to share around our table). We had alcoholic drinks as well as zero-proof cocktails, all of which were outstanding! So glad we all shared the food, as it amplified the experience by letting us taste so many different dishes. What we ordered: pupu platter and chicken satay. Then spring rolls, crab rangoons. and the ginger salad (large portion - great for family style). From the featured specials, we had the mahi-mahi on couscous with tomatoes and spinach; steak pasta with demi-glace and gorgonzola; mahi-mahi tacos; and a Caribbean jerk handheld wrap. And for dessert, the PB cheesecake and key lime pie, both light and exceptionally made. Everyone in our group raved about the flavors in the food AND how well it was made; each aspect of our experience was exceptional. We averaged about $55 per person due to the alcoholic drinks and 25% tip.“

“We are here today for lunch. We are in town for States for Hockey and staying next door. By far the best restaurant experience I have ever had in my life. Fast, very friendly service. We got the salad/pizza bar and my son wanted a specific pizza and the made it right away fresh and hot and came to our table to tell us when it was ready so he could go get some. He’s picky and sometimes hard to please with food and no restaurant has ever been this kind an amazing to him. We have been places that won’t even bring refills in seven time. This restaurant was on top of everything! It was a great experience and we will definitely be back as we frequent Grand Rapids with 3 kids in hockey.“

“We came to try out the city sen restaurant. My husband had the mushroom goat cheeseburger. He said it was juicy and flavorful --no condiments necessary. I had the beef quesadillas. although this was on the shareable menu, it was quite large enough for me as a meal. The food was good, but it was the little amenities that made it very special --the unique silverware, carafe of ice water and pleasant ambient music in a modern setting made it a very special place for our date. It was fun to people watch through the open air windows. ( they fold close to keep in the AC if needed )Alex the manager shared with us some things we want to come back for, live music, etc. definitely planning to go back!

Wheelchair accessibility: The restrooms are quite large with low sinks and wide stalls. Although they are on the lower level, the elevator is also large and quite quick.“

“I recently had brunch at Portico with my wife and our two daughters, one who is 2 years old and our little 3-month-old baby, and the experience was honestly outstanding from beginning to end. As parents with two small children, going out to eat can sometimes feel stressful, especially during breakfast or brunch hours when places are crowded and loud, but Portico made us feel comfortable and welcomed the entire time.

From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere immediately stood out. The restaurant is beautiful, modern, clean, and upscale while still feeling warm and relaxed instead of overly formal. It has a calm energy that made it easy for our family to enjoy brunch comfortably without feeling rushed. Finding a place that works well for both adults and small children is not always easy, but Portico balanced that perfectly. The seating was comfortable, the environment was peaceful, and the overall experience felt polished from start to finish.

The service deserves a lot of credit. Every staff member we interacted with was friendly, patient, and genuinely welcoming to our family. They were very accommodating with our stroller and attentive throughout the meal without hovering too much. As parents, you really notice when a restaurant treats families kindly instead of making you feel like an inconvenience, and Portico absolutely delivered excellent hospitality. Little things like checking in at the right moments and making sure we had everything we needed made a big difference.

Now for the food — everything was excellent. The presentation was beautiful, but more importantly, the flavors matched the presentation. Everything tasted fresh and high quality. The brunch menu has a great variety of options that feel elevated while still being comforting and satisfying. The avocado toast was delicious, the eggs were perfectly cooked, the breakfast potatoes had great flavor and texture, and even the coffee stood out as fresh and smooth. You can tell the kitchen actually cares about consistency and quality instead of just pushing food out quickly.

What impressed me most was how relaxed the entire experience felt. We never felt rushed, even with two little kids at the table. We were able to enjoy our food, spend time together as a family, and actually have a peaceful brunch experience, which is something parents truly appreciate. Sometimes hotel restaurants can feel generic or forgettable, but Portico genuinely stands out on its own as a destination worth visiting.

Whether you are staying at the hotel, visiting downtown Grand Rapids, or simply searching for a great brunch spot, I highly recommend Portico. It offers the perfect mix of quality food, professional service, beautiful atmosphere, and family-friendly hospitality. Our whole family left happy, full, and already talking about coming back again.
