“I’ve been on a search for truly high-quality sushi for a LONG time, and I’ve always had a pretty simple way of judging a sushi restaurant: the tuna roll.
It sounds basic, but that’s exactly why I use it. There’s nowhere to hide. No heavy sauces, no elaborate toppings, no fried ingredients covering anything up. It comes down to the quality of the rice, the freshness and texture of the fish, and whether the restaurant understands how something simple should taste.
What I’m looking for is perfectly prepared sushi rice and that beautiful, deep-red tuna that is clean, fresh, tender, and actually tastes like quality fish.
Tokyo Sushi nailed it.
This is it. This is the one.
The funny thing is, you could easily drive right past this place without ever realizing what’s inside. It sits behind a simple storefront that most people probably wouldn’t give a second thought. There are no flashy signs, no bright lights, no trendy decor trying to convince you that you’re about to have an amazing meal. There are only a handful of seats, a small family-run atmosphere, and people who seem genuinely focused on taking care of their customers and making great sushi.
Honestly, that simplicity is part of what made me like it even more.
I came in to order takeout, and while I was waiting, they asked me to sit down. It wasn’t just the typical “you can wait over there” interaction you get at most restaurants. There was something genuinely warm about it. It felt more like being invited to sit down at someone’s dinner table than waiting for a takeout order. They were incredibly kind, welcoming, and sincere.
Then I tried the sushi.
The rice was exactly what I’ve been searching for—properly prepared, great texture, and flavorful without overpowering the fish. And the tuna was outstanding. Beautiful deep-red color, fresh, clean flavor, and the kind of quality you notice immediately when there isn’t anything else on the roll to distract from it.
A simple tuna roll told me pretty much everything I needed to know.
You can spend a lot of time looking for the newest, busiest, most expensive, or most talked-about sushi restaurant and completely overlook a place like this. Sometimes the best food is sitting quietly in a small storefront with six seats and a family that clearly cares about what they’re serving.
I’ve been looking for this kind of sushi for a long time.

Randomly came across Gaijin late night after leaving Go! Comedy Ferndale.
I was ecstatic when they had 80s video karaoke when I walked in!!
The owner Remy is great! I told him to surprise me with some ramen & a roll. They were both amazing!

You can tell the ingredients were fresh, especially with the salmon. The GM Roll had a nice crispy texture with a sauce that brought everything together really well.
