“Okay so this place blew our minds. We're from California and stayed in NJ because NYC was too expensive. Oak St Liquor and Deli just happened to be around the corner so we took a chance. I kid you not, they had some of the best sandwiches I have had in my life. We ordered the fish sandwich (golden fried thick cod filet complemented with crisp lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and housemate tartar sauce, Philly cheese steak (classic cheese steak with roasted onions and peppers and cheese sauce), and prosciutto and fig with goat cheese (loaded thick stack of prosciutto, sweet fig jam, generous amount of goat cheese, and arugula). We also ordered coffees that were delicious. We didn't think we would stumble upon this place but we are so glad we did. This place wasn't in our planned itiniery but we will be back!“

“Alex is an absolute institution in the neighborhood and (even more important), a truly good soul whose kindness makes all of the food taste even better. He knows every family by name, and goes out of his way to look out for all of us. This morning he saw me drop by coffee all over myself on the street and was immediately there with a wet towel and a replacement coffee. The bagels are always fresh, coffee is strong, and fruit is crisp. We love Alex and his deli!“

“I absolutely adore this old school, multi-generational, Cantonese style bakery. Its pricing and offerings still cater to the old school Chinese crowd. It’s got a huge selection considering its size which translates to a lot of labor and my sense is that they probably rely on volume (fortunately they always seem busy!) for profit like many Chinatown businesses do.

We continue to lose traditional places like this in favor of bubble tea chains and shops that cater towards younger generations and tourists. Please cherish shops like these and keep the Chinatown that serves its own community alive.

“Fillmore Deli and Backroom is a pretty solid neighborhood spot with a surprising mix of options. The Korean fried chicken is actually really good crispy, flavorful, and definitely worth trying. They also have a large variety of sandwiches, so there’s something for whatever mood you’re in.

One thing that always throws me off though is they tend to run out of the tuna pretty often, which is strange for a deli. But besides that, everything else seems to be okay. It’s a reliable place to grab a quick bite and the food usually hits the spot.“

The shop has been around for more than 50 years and still serves some of the best sandwiches in the city. We ordered the famous “3 The Hard Way” to try all three classics: pastrami, brisket, and corned beef. Each one was stacked high on rye, and the flavors were incredible. The brisket had that perfect smoky edge, and the pastrami was full of spice and tenderness. You can feel the legacy in every bite. It’s casual, local, and full of character. If you want an authentic deli experience in Brooklyn, this is the spot to visit.“

“The sandwiches were delicious and what really impressed me was the customer service. I ordered the S3 Fireman and thought the chipotle chicken was shredded chicken mixed with chipotle sauce. I didn't realize it was actually a shredded chicken chipotle cold cut. I love cold cuts, but unfortunately I can't have them at the moment, so I asked if it would be possible to substitute grilled chicken instead. They were so nice and made me a whole new sandwich.
