“After my wife and I were married in 1976, we lived for a time in an apartment building on East Superior Street, next door to Gino East's pizzeria, in Chicago's Streeterville neighborhood, steps from the Magnificent Mile. At least once a week, usually after we returned from our day's work, we had dinner at Gino East's. It was our introduction to one of the best pizzas in town. But that was then and this is now. I'm at Gino East's of Chicago in Los Angeles and I want to see how the West Coast version of Gino East's pizza compares to its original in Chicago. Located at 12924 Riverside Drive in Sherman Oaks, one of Los Angeles' most fashionable suburbs, it has been voted the best pizza for two years in a row by the Los Angeles Times, deep dish and thin crust. Open from 11:30 to 9 Sunday through Thursday and 11:30 to 10 on Friday and Saturday, this location was opened in 1969, three years after the flagship restaurant was launched at 162 East Superior in Chicago. To be sure I could enjoy the same kind of pizza that I have been enjoying since I was in high school in the 1950s, I opted for Gino East's "Build Your Own" offer, a 16-inch large thin crust pizza with chunky tomato sauce, Italian sausage and real aged mozzarella cheese. I have been going here for about 30 years and love the fact that it is a family owned business, so Michael Jr. is there and delivers my meatball parm sub up the street to the Cardinal Club. And the tomato and mozzarella is awesome as well. I would gladly eat ANY of the dishes from Michaels. Now I want some!“

“My wife and I are pizza fanatics specifically Neapolitan style. A hybrid gas, wood fire grill that makes a near perfect pie. We split a Margherita and Mushroom pie.

The Cesar salad was great, a touch of lemon zest and crispy lettuce.

The meatballs were high quality and this is coming from a self proclaimed meatball master.

“We love going to Foster—at this point, you could say we’re regulars. We typically sit at the bar. We especially love their specials, and I’m still thinking about the elk burger I had last year (please bring it back!).The oysters are always fresh and delicious, and the fried chicken is absolutely amazing. Recently, I’ve been loving the salmon with corn and shishito succotash and blueberry teriyaki. Honestly, everything is consistently fresh and delicious.

John, the bartender, makes excellent cocktails—many with fun names like Silence of the Lambrusco. He puts a lot of care into his craft, from house-infused ingredients to thoughtful presentation. He also always keeps you hydrated with their house water, which I truly appreciate.

Happy hour is a great deal and is available at the bar only, Wednesday through Sunday from 5:00–7:00 pm, and all night on Mondays. We love ordering the wood-fired Margherita pizza and fried chicken wings for $12.36, along with their house margarita at $10.30—delicious and affordable.

When we do get a table, the service is always spot on.
