Then Little Italy rises around me, red sauce in the window, low voices behind the counter, somebody laughing too loud in the back.

For twenty minutes, I carry the whole life: full tables, protected blocks, meat sliced with purpose, children who grow up knowing someone is standing at the door.

I'm particularly partial to the pumpernickel, which are really fantastic and contain real rye seeds. They are the real deal.“
