“There is much to admire on the elegant, well-lit terrace of this natural wine-fueled, Catalan-inspired restaurant. Waitresses wearing plastic face shields as Hassidic men walked by in giant black fur hats created a vibe somewhere between science fiction and shtetl. But it was the creative, lovingly prepared food that I won’t soon forget: charred radishes, rotisserie chicken slow-cooked on a vintage rotisserie oven and grilled octopus with patatas bravas that momentarily transported me to the Spanish coast. All presided over by Lindsay Brennan, one of the best natural wine sommeliers in town.“

“As Mon Lapin is ranked as the 2nd best restaurant in Canada and the 5th best in North America, it is natural that there is a lot of hype around it. We booked a month in advance, such is the demand for table. On the other side of the coin, you will see some (few) reviews from customers which are on the negative side. Whether these are authentic is hard to say, but perhaps the hype invites Contrary Mary's to have their say - the hype who would complain about the sky being blue and the grass being green.

What is easy to say is that my partner and I had, without a doubt, the most enjoyable dining experience of our lives last night. We opted for the sharing menu, which features some items from the menu and some surprises. Our server, Nino, was incredibly accommodating, and while we are not fussy, nor have any allergies, he was scrupulous in his efforts to ensure that we would be served dishes which were to our taste. He also talked us through several wine options, without a hint of pretentiousness, and made us, two run-of-the-mill teachers from the back end of Scotland feel very much at home in this borderline fabled restaurant with his easy going, funny, yet professional manner. Mon Lapin, if you are reading this, Nino deserves a raise - he is terrific.

The food speaks for itself. The only dish not pictured here is the fried pasta with sopressata and radicchio (which was wonderful, we simply forgot to take a picture). We started off with clams, sea urchin and tomato, all of which were an absolute flavour bomb, though fresh and light enough to not totally dominate our dining experience from minute one. They were a delightful prelude to the slightly more rich yet incredible sopressata and radicchio pasta dish.

Our next plate was a medley of tomatoes and tuna accompanied by Mon Lapin's renowned scallion toast. The scallion toast reminded me of home, a very classy fish and chips type vibe. It was light and melted in our mouths. The tomatoes and tuna, however, were on another level. The flavour and freshness that this dish brought were unlike anything I have ever tasted before. It really blew me away and for me, was the star of the show.

Also pictured are our spinach and ricotta pasta, which was just incredible, the duck breast and leg which came with a plum and beetroot sauce and a cabbage salad - tremendous - and our sensational dessert, a sort of salted caramel tiramisu cake (I think with caramelised onion?) and these delightful wafers which dissolved in our mouths.

I also want to compliment the pace of service. I feel that, at times, when dining at a small plates restaurant, service can be too rushed and you don't get the time to enjoy and digest each course. This is not the case at Mon Lapin, who pace their service to allow you the time to enjoy your experience there. It was a wonderful place to spend an evening.

I can't say anything that will do this place justice - you have to try it for yourself. But if you have an open mind and a hungry belly, you will have a truly wonderful time. I haven't tried every restaurant in Canada or North America to comment too much on the rankings, but this is the best restaurant that I have ever visited. Thank you to the chefs at Mon Lapin and to Nino for giving my partner and I such a wonderful memory.“

“What a fabulous dining experience. The menu is quite abstract, so it is perfect for any adventurous eaters. The atmosphere was great, it’s a really beautiful vibe. “Gia is a fun place to go to when in Montreal. It's tucked behind an old industrial building on Lenoir that houses high tech startups and it exudes that vibe. The food is Italian and very, very good. Inventive and comforting at the same time. Our service was terrific. They have ample parking in the back. I saw a sign that said it was one of the best 100 restaurants in Canada and I can see why.“

“What a wonderful find in Old Montreal!!! Patrick was a generous and charming host. We tried a Porto white wine that was new to us and also crudo-that was outstanding, and goat cheese toast with anchovy or sardine on top. The sauce from the crudo was so delicious it demanded bread to dunk, which was gladly provided to us. “I arrived in Montreal for the weekend with my son and a friend of his for the weekend, and we started walking down Rue St Denis to find some dinner. In late August, the evening air was perfect patio weather, and that was my look for. We chanced upon Le Psy, not truly knowing what we were walking into. I am so glad we did.

I was instantly greeted by JeanYves, and my party sat outside. The QR for the menu was readily available, and my limited French was put to the test. There were some words I recognized from my school days (ok, mainly “fromage”), but Jean Yves was ready to ask us questions to find out what would fit our palette for the night. We settled on two large grilled cheese with a charcuterie board, which shortly came with a lovely selection of find meats and cheeses selected by Jean Yves. The board was filled out with some old mustard (it’s meant to be old…not old in a bad way 😉), pickles, olives, and what I described to my son as “Thanksgiving in a jar”, a spread that as I recall consisted of duck and duck fat, and was delicious!

Over the next hour and a bit, we sat, ate, and were thrilled with the experience that none of us sought out, but Jean Yves, through a love of his craft, delicately and warmly reeled us into.

Could we have gone elsewhere and got a cheap meal? Absolutely. But we would have missed out on this wonderful experience with some bold new flavours and ones that embraced out taste buds like old friends.

Take some time to experience Le Psy. You won’t be upset that you did.

“So, this review is a little different from most, because people often come to a place one time experience a good thing and drop a positive review. I on the other hand expect consistency and I am a little on the OCD side, especially when I travel. That just means I find the restaurants that I like and I have been known to eat the same meals two days in a row. One of the things that stands out immediately to me is that for the most part you have the same staff working dinner or evening shifts as you do the brunch on Saturday and Sunday. This makes for long days but it produces consistency. Timeliness and courtesy are number one for the ladies on the floor. Attention to detail is critical to the men on the cookline, as each plate comes out as an arrangement of food, not simply a pile of ingredients. I was in Montreal for a conference from Friday to Sunday so I was able to eat 2 dinners and 2 brunches, and I have to say they were quite exceptional. I do give the brunch a slight tip of the cap for being more consistent of the two meals and having the best consistency with the Big Brunch, the Americano, and the fresh squeezed juice. It is probably one of the best breakfast/brunches I have had since Verviers, Brussels in 2019. The Big Brunch consisted of fried sunny side up eggs, a sausage, fried potatoes with hollandaise, cubed fresh tomato, sourdough toast, fresh Americano, and fresh orange and grapefruit juice. The flavors work together to complement each other with the eggs having been lightly peppered by the chef and maybe fried in the salty fat from the sausage to give them the right amount of seasoning. Dinner the first day I had a beer and a ribeye prepared medium rare with pepper seasoning and a brown gravy accompanying the pureed potatoes. The steak was cooked perfectly. The next night I had the charcutier meat with sourdough, which was a nice assortment of the traditional fare one might find. It would have been nice to have found a smaller plate that include both meat and cheese. I did have a bottle of the California 2020 Elizabeth Spencer Cab and it paired well with everything, sometimes a little fruity and others a little spicy depending on how the notes hit the palette. Dinner was the same as the night before, but although the ribeye was ordered medium rare it came out more to medium. That was a little disappointing, but still satisfying in the end. To finish my meal I had the brownie with pecan crumble and sauce which finished off the bottle of Cab perfectly. This morning I had an amazing brunch again, and now I must say adieu as I head to the airport to return home.“

Our waitress was excellent—very attentive, she answered all our questions, and recommended several great dishes that we truly enjoyed. The food was delicious, and I especially loved the presentation. Being able to share the meals made the experience even more pleasant. The prices are also very reasonable. “Amazing Thai spot in Montréal, with a great natural wine list and a menu designed for sharing.

We started with Michel Gahier’s Montibulles, a sparkling Chardonnay from the Jura in eastern France. Then moved on to La Salada’s Bufarella 2021, a skin-contact orange wine from Penedès, Catalonia.

For food, we started with Yum Hoi Shenn - raw scallops with nam jim talay - followed by Sakoo Sai Moo, tapioca dumplings filled with pork and peanuts. For mains, we had Laab Ped, minced duck salad with grilled duck hearts; Pla Lui Suan, whole fried Arctic char with pineapple, cashews and lemongrass; and Gai Yang, marinated grilled chicken with Thai dipping sauce.

Finished with Nam Kang Sai, a Thai shaved-ice dessert.

I had the special shrimp asparagus toast and the roasted carrots (delish) and the piri piri chicken (good flavor a bit tough and I wanted more pickles). Drank a Rosa which was lovely and refreshing. “After several visits in just one month, I can say that this café is officially one of my favorites in Montreal, especially for studying? The individual tables are large enough to accommodate 2 computers and there are numerous sockets. The place is also very aesthetic with its high ceiling and its shrubs which bring serenity.
