“My son and I stopped by tonight, and I was honestly blown away. I’m not usually a cake person, but their marble cake completely won me over. The frosting on both the cake and cupcakes was just right—not overly sweet, but rich and delicious. The lemon poppy cupcake was also phenomenal. First time trying a Venezuelan coffee from Artisan Bakery food truck. I’m usually picky with my coffee but this was just perfect, right ratio amounts of coffee, milk & sugar (yes, I like mine with milk). Even the cups are cute! ❤️

You don’t go to Fresh Donuts on Thaxton Road because you’re looking for a theme or lofty notions of challenging what exactly a donut shop can be. You’re not there to pay premium prices for half-baked (or half-fried) vessels to deliver some novel topping or flavor with dubious execution. No, you’re likely there because you’re in the area and your options are limited.

This is not an indictment against the quality to be found at this humble shop nor a cynical jeer at the dedication that’s at work here. Fresh Donuts deals in the Platonic idea of the donut and they do it remarkably well. The evidence is in the balance of velvety airiness and crispy sweetness in every bite of a classic plain glazed; the captivating ratio of cinnamon to sugar on a cinnamon twist that is never cloying or bland. When the thing you make lines up cleanly with the archetype, anything else becomes a diversion. Sharks have changed relatively little even after millions of years.

Yuzu Pie ($3.85): Similar to a larger McDonald’s pie but with yuzu flavor. It’s light, flaky, and crumbles easily, making it a bit messy to eat. The yuzu flavor is nice and refreshing. I think it would taste even better if we took it home and air-fried it for extra crispiness.

Iced Matcha Tiramisu Latte ($7.25 Large) + Oat Milk ($0.80): I expected the tiramisu cream layer to be sweet, but it tasted more like salted cream cheese foam. Not bad, but the name is a bit misleading. The matcha itself was pretty good both on its own and when mixed with the cream. That said, I prefer the honey lavender matcha latte more.

Iced Honey Lavender Matcha Latte ($6.25) + Oat Milk ($0.80): Delicious and flavorful. You can distinctly taste each ingredient, which is rare in a drink. The matcha has a beautiful, vibrant green color and a great flavor. Be sure to stir it well since the honey and lavender syrup settle at the bottom.“

“Walked in for a bahn mi and was instantly greeted and shown around. I ended up getting a rack of bbq pork buns and a taro bun instead. 6 baos for $7.50 is unbeatable in the entire city and this shop must be protected and supported at all cost.
