“Route 71 between Bergstrom Airport and Bastrop is kind of a food desert. But they are just now starting to get food trucks. However, there is one food truck that has been in Cedar Creek forever. Mi Barrio at 71 and Pope Bend. This is an absolutely superlative food truck. If you needed one and only one place to eat along Route 71, This is the one you would want. * * * Tex-Mex is the order of the day here. The menu is very traditional. They are unapologetic about offering "alternative parts of the animal" such as tripas. The food is firey hot but hot with magnificent flavor. I never understood why people told me that Tex-Mex food is spicy. It isn't spicy in most places. It IS spicy at Mi Barrio. And this is fire you could learn to love. * * * Four notes of interest. a) I had the chicken fajitas. At bad Mexican food trucks, they use cheap chicken, Chicken that leaves a bad taste in your mouth. They use high integrity high quality ingredients at Mi Barrio. You could serve this chicken to your mother. b) Even though Mi Barrio is right next to Cedar Creek High School, I have never once seen a Cedar Creek High School student there. You go to the fast food restaurants near Westwood High in Austin, and they are packed with Westwood High students. I suspect the principal at Cedar Creek is stricter than the principal at Westwood High about letting students off school grounds. c) Most of the customers do not eat at the food truck. All of the customers I saw were working class Mexican. A few ordered for themselves and went off to eat someplace. A few others came in to get large orders that I presume were taken back to some work crew. The location is not wonderful. They are in the parking lot of a fairly cruddy Exxon convenience store. Highway 71 scenery is not magnificent. d) This place opens early and closes early. They will be there for breakfast. They will be there for lunch even if you wander in around 1-ish. I am a late afternoon kind of a guy which generally means I found them closed. * * * It would be snarky for me to say this is the best eating on Route 71, given the nearly total lack of competition. But it is more meaningful to say this place can stand up with The best of the Mexican/Central American food trucks on North Lamar in Austin AND The best of the Mexican/Central American food trucks on Route 812 in Del Valle. These are concentrations of really excellent Mexican food. You might not want to drive 35 miles to eat here. The location is ugly. This ain't no picture postcard. But if you DO stop and eat here, ignoring the view, You will eat very well indeed.“
“The owners of this place are a sweet and serviceable couple. Coming from a very Mexican home, I can attest that their food is great! The tortillas are homemade and their food seasoning is superb! Super recommended. Definitely one of my go spots. Still cash only ?? When I place to go orders, she is always so kind to gauge my time to when I will be coming to pick up. “Good hearty food for a decent price. Generous portions. Bone-in pork chops were well seasoned--there were two! The flat bread (baleda) had a great texture, $4 for bean/cream, $6 for breakfast. Main plates were around $15. Covered area with a good amount of seating.“
“Great food! Got a late night meal from here, i ordered the beef fried rice with no veggies, crab rangoons, egg rolls and a pork bun! The rice was a little mushy which is not my preference but had a great flavor and the beef was nicely cooked! I enjoyed the appetizers have nothing bad to say about those, would really be great if small cups of soups were offered instead of only large, customer service was great and food was prepared on time!“
“They guy that owns this was the main chef at Captain Ds iirc.I’m from New Orleans and his food is so good you can just go here and spare the trip for amazing Cajun seafood.I love the crawfish and shrimp po boys and the fish plates are amazing.Hush puppies on point and he even makes Fried Boudin Balls which you really must try.“
“This place is an absolute must go when you come to COTA! Super friendly owner and staff. Food is excellent, you can tell love and attention goes into what their making. Breakfast Croissants are super fresh, ham is smoked to perfection, and then there are his lunch and dinner foods. Brisket is top notch and rivals that of the other local big guys. Try his Jalepeno cheddar Sausage. Its juicy, and great flavor.“
“First time customer. Tonight I tried the costilla de puerco (pork ribs). About the sauce: ribs were cooked in a rich verde sauce, mild heat, mildly sour, but pleasant, tangy, not acidic. The fat from the fall-off-the bone ribs and slight caramelization of the meat gave everything just the right consistency and taste. The rice was better than most places (soft but not mushy). The beans and tortillas rounded it all out. Normally I don't fill up on all the tortillas but I used all of it to clean the plate.“
