“We were roadtripping on 95 and needed a place to stop for snacks so we selected Foode and Mercantile. What a very pleasant surprise. After winding through a tree lined road boarding the river, we found the restaurant in quaint downtown Fredericksburg, VA. We each ordered bourbon based drinks, coffee, tea and Smoked Salmon, Quiche and a gingerbread scone! It was delicious! They quickly fixed what was a smaller than normal portion of salmon and kept coffee and water glasses full without asking. Very nice spot! Fresh cooked to order food with great service! “This was my second time dining at S & G.

The first visit caught me off guard, in a very good way, so I came back with the intention of sitting down and reviewing the food.

I ordered the breakfast sampler, which came with crispy pork bacon, greasy pork sausage, perfectly salty pork ham, fried eggs (done however you like), and a side of hashbrowns that are worth dying for (though you can choose from a variety of sides). The whole plate hit that comforting, real American diner balance: salty, crispy, and soft in all the right places.

But the real standout was the French toast. Thick and dense, yet still soft, it soaked up the syrup beautifully and somehow kept tasting better with each bite. It was piled with strawberries and bananas, and the smell was something else, sweet fruit, powdered sugar, and syrup blending into the bitter aroma of black coffee and the rich, salty scent of the meats.

The coffee was absolutely invigorating.

S & G doesn’t rely on looks, but it captures exactly what a breakfast diner is meant to be.
